Clearinghouse for Random Packet Announcements
Re: Clearinghouse for Random Packet Announcements
I'm thinking of writing a new Pokémon packet after the new games come out. It's probably going to be tossup only and will hopefully be done by Festivus. How many people would be interested? I know that there has been Pokémon packets before but is the demand sufficient? I am writing a ton of academic questions right now so I don't want to take time writing trash questions no one will hear.
If I do write the packet, it will include questions on the games, anime, manga, spin off games (eg. stadium, mystery dungeon) and the Pokéfandom as a whole.

I'd be down with this, even if I'd be clueless about Gen 6 onward. I also have a Google doc with 50 unused Pokémon tossups that I haven't updated since July, and I was planning on bumping that up to 120 when I had the time.Progcon wrote:I'm thinking of writing a new Pokémon packet after the new games come out. I'll also take this opportunity to announce an "Internet content" packet written in response to Naveed's exclusion of it from Maryland Trash that I'll probably save for Festivus, along with a "secret theme" packet.

I'd be super excited for the internet content questions and I'll try to start working on the Pokémon questions once I can ease up on the academic and my internship applications die down.

I am late for Festivus because I couldn't stay up late enough to get into the queue, but I do have a themed film packet that if there are people actually free on Christmas Eve, I'll read around 4 EST.

Re: Clearinghouse for Random Packet Announcements
Playing the non-US sports packet at Festivus yesterday reminded of me "CamO Sports", a packet-sub tournament I edited in the UK last year. There were 9 rounds of 20 tossups with some semblance of a distribution (3 football, 2 rugby, 2 cricket, 2 racquet sports, 2 golf, 1 motorsport, 1 US sport, 1 athletics, 1 cycling, 5 other) - but the tournament was only played at a UK site.
If anyone wants the packets, either to peruse at their leisure, to serve as a digestif after a practice, or to read out on the IRC, just drop me an email at corfieldga [at] gmail [dot] com. Being designed for UK players, the US sport content will be hilariously easy for an american audience, but that will probably be evened out by the tossups on darts commentators and cricket stadia.

Re: Clearinghouse for Random Packet Announcements
Posting here to get a feel if there's any interest for some packet ideas I have.
Would anyone be interested in an Alternate History packet? I know there are at least two AH people who also do Quizbowl.
Also, I've been throwing around the idea of a 21st century history packet.
Also, for reading, there are bonuses that went unread in my trash packet for Festivus, if anyone is interested.

For anyone who has not heard it yet, I will be reading a packet of RPG video game tossups (about 70% jrpg 30% western rpg) I wrote back in May in the IRC on Thursday night around 10pm EST. If you liked (real) ACFNATIONALS or my 2015 Festivus packet, you will probably enjoy this.

Just a reminder that I will be tearing myself away from my new Alolan adventures to read my rpg packet from May at 10pm EST in the IRC tonight. If you weren't at HSNCT, you probably haven't heard this.
EDIT: The final scores on my packet were Eric and Matt Lafer tied at 70, with Pat just a bit behind on 40. If anyone else is interested in it, it'll be posted along with all the Festivus 2016 packets whenever Rob gets around to doing so. :)

Re: Clearinghouse for Random Packet Announcements
My co-writer Trent Koch uploaded FTP1 (Fuck this Packet) to the archive today. It is a trash packet set with a pretty standard distribution (4/4 Sports, 3/3 Movies, 3/3 TV, 3/3 Video Games, 4/4 Music, 1/1 Pop and Internet Culture and 2/2 Misc) but it has some outside the box questions. It is meant to be read to some friends when you want to have a laugh at each other or at the questions. I read the 5 packets at Waterloo's mirror of MYSTERIUM last year and the field seemed to enjoy it so we will probably make an FTP2 for Summer 2017.
Please give me some feedback on FTP1 if you read any of the packets. I hope you found it enjoyable, but if not, please tell me so I can make FTP2 better. There will probably be less video games and sports next time and more movies and TV. If there is interest, I could read these over on the IRC sometime this week but otherwise people can just read them from the archive at their leisure.

Re: Clearinghouse for Random Packet Announcements
I can attest that FTP was very good, IMO other than less sports I wouldn't change a thing about the distribution. The only problem with FTP was some of the early clues were very unspecific to the answer line (stuff like "this movie was supposed to have this quality, but doesn't") or really arcane details about what brought the movie or album about. But the answer lines were good enough to redeem all of that.

I've written a packet of 15 tossups on Polandball -- if people are interested in playing this send me a PM and I'll try to figure out a time to read it over Skype or Google Hangouts.
Also, the questions are almost all 10 lines long or longer.

I'll read Polandballbowl (Polandbowl?) at 9pm Saturday -- PM me your Skype information if you're interested.
If there are several people who would like to play the packet but aren't available then (due to WAO traveling or whatever) I'd be open to doing another reading. If you'd want this, also PM me so I have an idea whether there's interest.

This may have long become myth and legend, but I'm about halfway through a 20/20 Wheel of Time packet on the few things I remember (and some things I don't) from the series. Let me know if anyone's interested in a reading when the packet is finished (probably in the next week). I could probably also easily convert it to 30/0 or 40/0 if that would be better suitable for IRC readings.

Re: Clearinghouse for Random Packet Announcements
Anyone at ICT who wasnt at HSCNT last year want to read some questions from last year's ACRONYM? I stupidly took Spirit and they F'ed up and I wasn't able to make it. I would love to play the questions with someone this weekend or at one of the upcoming tournaments.

Re: Clearinghouse for Random Packet Announcements
This is now complete. It is 20/0 with powers (and superpowers in some cases) to facilitate reading on the IRC.setophaga wrote:This may have long become myth and legend, but I'm about halfway through a 20/20 Wheel of Time packet on the few things I remember (and some things I don't) from the series. Let me know if anyone's interested in a reading when the packet is finished (probably in the next week). I could probably also easily convert it to 30/0 or 40/0 if that would be better suitable for IRC readings.
PM me if you are interested in playing, and let me know what would be your preferred date. I could read it tonight if enough people are interested, but otherwise it'll probably happen early next week (Monday or Tuesday)

Re: Clearinghouse for Random Packet Announcements
Barring any objections, this will be read at some point tonight on the IRC, as that seems to work for everyone who has already replied. PM me to confirm, and we'll start when I've heard from everyone.setophaga wrote:This is now complete. If people can't make it, I'd be happy to arrange a second reading at some later point.
