BUTT

Post by eliza.grames »

With only twelve tossups left to write, I can now happily announce that the Best Unedited Trash Tournament (BUTT) will be ready for mirrors starting on December 5! There is no “main site” for this tournament because it was playtested in Minnesota.

In keeping with my past trash questions, this tournament is biased towards “modern” pop culture and silliness. Unlike my past tournaments, it has bonuses and is an actual set. Also in a shocking turn of events, there are less than five Radiohead, Run the Jewels, and Neutral Milk Hotel references in the set.

Difficulty
This is an easy tournament and was designed to be a high school trash tournament. This means that answerlines should be accessible to everyone and I hope very few tossups will go dead. I tried to pick answerlines that are well-known (if not well-liked).

That said, hosts can set their own rules about who can play and I’m more than happy to have it hosted as an open tournament, intramural, college, etc…

Distribution
5/5 Music
5/5 Movies
5/5 TV
2/2 Celebs
1/1 “Sports” and games
1/1 Other Things
1/0 Tiebreaker (music, movies, or TV)

I spread out music/movies/TV by genre so that there is roughly 1/1 hip hop or rap in each packet, 1/1 pop, etc… The poster contains "clues" but I think it only has one actual answer line in it.

It should be noted that in some instances, I just really didn’t feel like writing a question on an answerline I’d picked out, so I replaced it with whatever I felt like writing on. For example, I just couldn’t bring myself to learn anything about Orange is the New Black so I wrote about something else. Later packets follow the distribution less closely, but it’s still pretty much on par with the distribution.

Mild Profanity
On the advice of my wonderful playtesters, I removed all profanity from the set, though there may still be a few lingering artifacts that some players might find middle offensive.

Mirrors
The set is available for anyone to mirror, provided they aren’t within close proximity to a different site.

The set is being playtested on December 5, so there may be minor tweaks worked out after then. Any mirrors taking place on December 5 will have an unedited set; subsequent sets will be semi-edited for horribly misplaced clues and terrible ideas.

I’d like mirrors to wrap up before ACRONYM mirrors start in late February because Erik Nelson is awesome and you should all play ACRONYM because it’s also awesome. That said, if a site can’t host until like, a week into ACRONYM mirrors, that’s probably okay.

Mirror fee is $25/team or $8/player, depending on how you charge at your site. I recommend doing a team structure since there are bonuses, but hey, do what you want. If you’re doing something else, let me know and we can figure something out.

Email me at grame012 at umn.edu if you want to mirror BUTT.

BUTT now features a delightful guest tossup by Jonah Greenthal.
