MVP (Musical/Visual Packet)

Post by L.H.O.O.Q. »

The Purdue University Quiz Bowl Team is proud to announce MVP (Musical/Visual Packet), a tossups-only *set on just about anything you can possibly describe as "audiovisual art." The set will be weighted heavily toward opera and film, but we plan to also include ballet, music videos, musicals, TV, and video games. We intend to split the set roughly 50/50 between "fine arts" and "trash," though your perception of this ratio will skew based on the types of media you consider art.

We plan to write *more than 6 packets of 20/0. *We are still discussing when to hold this; possibly at a side event weekend over the summer if the COVID-19 situation clears up in that time period.

I find that it's fairly difficult to match the difficulty of trash to the difficulty of academic content, but on the whole, this tournament is pretty difficult. Likely beyond the most recent ACF Regionals and Super ACRONYM.

This was originally planned to be a side event to ICT. With NAQT's cancellation of ICT, we have decided to expand the set. As such, the current sign-up sheet is no longer dependable. We will try to talk to people who may be organizing side event weekends, or with any potential mirrors of open tournaments next academic year, about the potentiality of running this as a Sunday event.

This is our working distro:

5/0 Film
5/0 Opera
2/0 Musicals
2/0 TV
2/0 Music Videos
1/0 Ballet
1/0 Video Games
2/0 "Other" (mixed or other media)

Alterations may be made to this distro between now and the premiere of the packet.

As of me posting this, 50% of the set is written (edited or otherwise). Currently, the set leans pretty heavily toward trash, but we still plan to even out the distro.

Right now, we're looking to run this on Saturday evening after ICT.

*This used to be a link to a signup sheet.

I'd like to play. I need a partner who knows something about opera or fine arts.

For self-evident reasons, this is no longer an ICT side event. With our extended deadline, we plan to expand this set, potentially up to 12 packets. We'll keep you posted if we figure out any possible hosting sites in the Midwest.

Hi everyone!

Despite what you may have assumed, MVP is still in production. After a short hiatus, the core writing team has resumed writing and editing duties. In the event of a successful vaccine before nationals season, we'll try once again to run this as a nationals side event; otherwise, we may run it at either an open side-event weekend during the summer of 2021 or as a short online tournament.

The packet will now be 7 packets: 6 regular packets plus a "finals packet" loaded with all the hardest stuff we wrote. The "regular" packets are shaping up to have their academic content well beyond ACF Regionals difficulty, and their pop culture content around the level of 2018's Chicago Open Trash. The distribution looks as follows:
  • 5/0 opera
  • 4/0 film
  • 2/0 TV
  • 2/0 musicals
  • 2/0 music videos
  • 1/0 video games
  • 1/0 ballet
  • 3/0 other/grab bag
In addition, all questions on content that is not strictly musical in nature (i.e. film, TV, video games) will have clues that emphasize the musical components of their subjects.

In creating these stipulations and modifying the distribution, we decided to remove some 30 questions from what we currently had of the set. The content of those packets will not be reused, and I plan to read that on the general quiz bowl Discord server sometime, to give players a teaser as to the length and difficulty of the questions.
