Qualification Information for the 2009 PACE NSC!

Post by AKKOLADE » Tue Aug 26, 2008 2:04 pm

PACE is pleased to announce its qualification process for teams wishing to attend the National Scholastic Championship, which will be held at George Mason University, May 23-24.

As in the past, teams qualify for the NSC by competing at “affiliated” PACE tournaments and placing at a minimum level determined by the size of the field. If you would like to find affiliated PACE tournaments that your team can attend, please feel free to e-mail PACE and we’ll be happy to assist you in finding one. If you’re interested in making a tournament that you host a PACE NSC qualifier, please see below. Post hoc affiliation is possible.

For a PACE affiliated tournament with 19 or fewer teams, the top two teams receive automatic invitations. For a PACE affiliated tournament with between 20 and 47 teams, the top four teams receive automatic invitations. For a PACE affiliated tournament with more than 48 teams, the top six teams receive automatic invitations.

As in the past, the PACE NSC accepts more than one team per school, as long as each team qualifies independently in the normal manner. Second, third, fourth, and all further teams from the same school that wish to qualify must possess a significantly distinct (at the discretion of PACE) roster from all previous teams.

PACE will offer wildcard invitations to the NSC after a certain date if spots in the field remain unfilled. If you would like to apply for a wildcard bid, please e-mail Dr. Chuck.

Making a Tournament a PACE NSC Qualifier

Prerequisites:

In order to make an invitational tournament a qualifying tournament for the PACE NSC, it must possess the following characteristics:

A) It must use pyramidal questions.
B) It must guarantee all participating teams a minimum of four matches played.
C) The Tournament Director must keep standard statistics for the tournament and make the data available to PACE afterward for use in seeding. For an easy method of keeping statistics, PACE suggests that Tournament Directors use SQBS or Taft.
D) PACE strongly encourages the proliferation of freely available practice material for quizbowl teams. To that end, we request, but do not require, that the questions used at affiliated tournaments be made publicly available by the end of the academic year.

Process:

In order to have your tournament accredited qualification status, you have only to send an e-mail to Fred Morlan at fredmorlan@gmail.com . In the e-mail, you should verify that your tournament meets the prerequisites listed above by identifying the source of your questions and, if it has been determined, describing your tournament format. PACE will review your e-mail and either send you an e-mail approving your tournament (after which you can advertise it as such), or send you an e-mail explaining the reason why it wasn’t accepted and suggest methods of resolving the problem.

Thanks to Trygve Meade for his work on this policy!

If you have any questions, please post them in this thread.

Samples would really be appreciated. If not provided, I'll check with the rest of PACE for approval; if necessary, I'll request them.

Unless other members of PACE want them, I don't think we need in-house samples BEFORE the tournament runs, of course. :) If the questions become available after the tournament (including all mirrors), those samples would be appreciated.

Just for courtesy, please let us know if there are mirrors using the same set of questions. Each mirror site needs to let us (Fred) know they are going to be a PACE-qualifying event.

Right, current questions aren't really wanted for security reasons of your tournament; however, past questions can be useful.

This is just a reminder in case I have forgotten due to the busy life of a higher ed admin.

If you have talked even informally with me about PACE affiliation, please make sure you contact Fred about being on the qualifiers/affiliated tournament list for PACE NSC 2009. Some of you with whom I have a friendly business relationship should remember to contact Fred so we have you on the calendars appropriately.
