SCOP A Novice Set Fall 2020

Post by TheDoctor »

SCOP A, a high school novice-level set, will be available for mirroring from October 10, 2020 through January 17, 2021. This is a tossups-only set. There are eleven rounds of 20 tossups each and a replacement round of 20 tossups. The difficulty is identical to normal SCOP Novice tossups, but the tossups-only format will reduce the overall difficulty of the set.

SCOP is in talks over the online rights to the set, but in-person tournaments can purchase the use of the set for $7 per team. Stats/scoresheet discounts will not be available for this set, and we ask that you do NOT send any scoresheets or physical results from tournaments using this set.

The distribution is the same as for normal SCOP Novice sets' tossup distribution:
4 Literature
4 Science
4 History
1 Math (non-computational)
1 Geography
1 CE/PSS
2 Religion and mythology
2 Fine arts
1 Pop culture

This set is not in any way related to SCOP11. SCOP11 is in separate production, and is expected to be available for tournament use either in spring 2021 or in the 2021-22 academic year. A tossup-bonus tournament set will not be available from SCOP for the fall semester.

A second SCOP set, SCOP B, will be available for mirroring by online tournaments during the Spring 2021 semester.

You can contact me at [email protected] with questions or to reserve the set for an in-person tournament. Please stay safe and play responsibly!

Online rights to the set have been purchased by the IHSSBCA (to Illinois teams only) and AQBL (to any non-Illinois teams).

If you need a novice-level set for your online tournament, consider mirroring SCOP B, available between January and June.

Now that the set is complete, I've reassessed the overall difficulty and have changed the original post to reflect that. Two consequences of this being a tossups-only set will, I believe, change the way this set plays when compared with a standard SCOP set: since there are no bonuses, players will only ever have to identify "tossup-able" content, and will not have to come up with medium- or hard-difficulty answers; and, since there are fewer answers overall, there were more purely novice-level tossup answers available to use as tossup answerlines. Consequently, I suspect this set and SCOP B will both play slightly easier than usual, and will likely be suitable for middle school teams.

SCOP A has run its course, and has been posted to the archive. Thanks to everyone who ran and played the set! If you still need a novice set for this year, SCOP B will be available for mirroring starting January 30.
