The University of Alabama would like to announce its fourth annual William Rufus King Tournament to take place on September 18, 2010, the weekend of the Duke away football game. We will using NAQT as our vendor.

Email [email protected] or post on here if your school is interested in attending.

Roll Tide!

Official Informational Email:

The Alabama Academic Quizbowl Team is pleased to announce its fourth annual William Rufus King Memorial Tournament, to be held on Saturday, September 18th, 2010, at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

The Alabama Academic Quizbowl Team is hosting the William Rufus King Memorial Tournament again after its success the past three years. This tournament will provide an opportunity for students to visit the premier college in the state of Alabama. Also, the tournament presents an opportunity to raise awareness of a Quizbowl organization at the Capstone, which might interest students wishing to pursue scholars’ bowl on the collegiate level. Finally, this will be an excellent opportunity for teams to play in an early season tournament in order to practice for later season events.

This tournament is designed for players in high-school (grades 9-12) but we would welcome middle and junior high-school players as well. Providing that there are enough teams composed entirely of students in those respective divisions, we would offer separate divisional play, and awards exclusively for those students.

This tournament will likely feature A-set questions provided by National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT), although this is yet-to-be confirmed by NAQT. As such, provided that NAQT does provide our questions, teams that finish in the top 15% of the total field would automatically qualify for the NAQT High-School National Championship to be held in 2011.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and match play starting at 9:00. We currently have Alston and Bidgood Halls reserved for our tournament; however, this is subject to change and the official information will be sent out to registered teams approximately 1-2 weeks before our tournament.

Interested schools should e-mail us with their intention of interest in attending at [email protected].

The following will be the fee structure for the tournament:
$70 for the first team from a school
$65 for every subsequent team
-$5 for every buzzer set
-$10 for every moderator
-$5 for every 100 miles traveled, as calculated by Google Maps
-$5 per team for a confirmation by August 1st, 2010

Confirmations for tournament attendance (with amount of teams indicated and number of buzzer systems and moderators) MUST be received by September 13th, 2010. Again, if you have questions or concerns, please contact us and we will do our best to help you.

We look forward to seeing all of you in September.

Field:
Columbia x 2
Hoover x 2
DAR x 3
St. Andrew's x 2
Holy Spirit Catholic
Indian Springs
LAMP x 2

It has been rumored that I can moderate up to seven matches at one time. If this holds true, would you increase the field size significantly?

Well dagnabbit, we can't have nice things. That's the best non home game day we could think of. The usual time of year we couldn't do (besides there's this tournament in Grant, Alabama that day you might know about)

I'm aware that there are other tournaments on this date, which is really unfortunate. As Owen said, this is the only day that works for us early in the school year, as we are at the mercy of Bama football.

Assuming I have a team (and I think I will), we will be there with at least one team. Just put us down tentatively as "Lee Henry's Team" until I can give more concrete information. I just want to make sure that space is reserved.

Thanks,

Lee

You can expect Hoover to attend this event with two squads. At least, you can expect it until we find out that Lee Henry is the new Hoover Quiz Bowl coach and he brings five teams. ;)

I'm growing more and more curious with every post concerning your next destination.

Honestly, Mark, I don't know that I'll end up ANYWHERE. But, I've had a few "nibbles." One school in particular seemed very interested in having me. I'm just waiting to hear back from them. Then there's another school that I'm hoping to interview with that's already pretty good at quiz bowl. If I went there...

But, technically, I haven't been offered anything at all.

AJ,

You might not be concerned with this, but most GA schools do not start school for at least another week (after this one), so having an early registration deadline on the first day of August (and a month and a half before the actual tournament) will be difficult for most GA teams to meet. I know that getting approval to travel out of state for my team before school starts is very hard to do.

Having hosted many tournaments before, it can be frustrating when teams say they are going to attend a tournament before they know they will/can, then have to "cancel" at some later date. So, I don't want to do that to y'all, but I also know I can't confirm our attendance by Sunday. A $5 discount might not be a big deal to other teams, but we must be conscious of our budget, particularly so early in the year. Again, I am not trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill, but I did want to bring up a concern I had.

If the discount applies to teams who are just "interested" in attending, then consider us interested for 1 team and 1-2 buzzer systems. Thanks!

Since y'all will be using the same set (97A) that we are using at GATA Fall on October 16th, we will be unable to attend this tournament. You can remove us from the Interested list. Hopefully, we can make it next year. Thanks.

Bainbridge has already registered for the GATA Fall Tournament so I think that, unfortunately, they will have to come off the interested list as well. Georgia teams will have to choose between Alabama's tournament and GATA Fall since they are using the same set.

What's the tentative schedule for this tournament? We have our Homecoming Dance that night. Many of my players can only come to the tournament if they will be back in Huntsville before 8:00 pm. I told them I couldn't promise that, but that I would check with you guys. Regardless, I should have two teams, but the strength of those teams will be dependent on whether the tournament is likely to end before 5:00 pm.

Thanks. We're looking forward to it.

-Lee

Tentatively, we are looking at a 9 AM start, 5-6 matches in the morning, lunch, 3-4 more in the afternoon, and we should be done by 4, God willing. Your players should be fine, barring unforeseen circumstances. We should be sending out the email to coaches on Monday.

Several of them are skipping it. However, others are on the Homecoming Committee and Court.

Believe it or not, Owen, but high school quizbowlers have a social life. It is okay if they have homecoming duties and if they want to go. It is not the end of the world, I encourage either skipping or not skipping.

Can you give a street address for the actual building in which we will be meeting? That would be very useful to all of my students and parents who will be using a GPS or Mapquest.

Thanks,

Lee

Lee,
I don't think there is an actual street address for those buildings. I would suggest you look up the two building names or better yet go

(And we are at 15 teams, so a 16th team would be great!)

Just to let everyone know, we have dropped to 13 teams. As 13 is the death wish for tournament coordinators, we will be on the lookout for a few players who would be willing to play on a scab team, just to make our scheduling lives easier!

Yes. This was an excellent tournament. I am glad to see that Alabama has ironed out all of the problems that once plagued their events. I would go so far as to say that this tournament was ostensibly flawless. Everything ran smoothly, it ended on time, and there were no delays between rounds. Kudos to everyone involved and a huge congrats to DAR for winning against a very tough field.

Congrats to DAR A for winning (and St. Andrew's and Holy Spirit for their 2nd and 3rd place finishes respectively.) I've heard entirely positive feedback on WRK, both on here and in person on Saturday. I hope to see you all at ACF Fall on November 6th here in Tuscaloosa!

AJ, we didn't receive a copy of the question set for this tournament--I wasn't personally there, so I don't know if you guys didn't give them out, or if they were there and my kids didn't grab one. Could I get you to give the set to Justin Tarbox to forward to me? I'd really like to get a copy if possible.

Thanks!

Coach Rutsky

PS- Congrats to DAR, who is looking more and more like the team to beat this year.

I think I'll just forward the digital copies of the questions to the coaches, if that is okay with everyone. It would save all of us a lot of effort, and would get it to every team who attended!
