I believe we pulled off a grail against St. Viator at the 2009 Loyburn. Granted, it was just an invitational on an HSAPQ set, but can this be verified?

EDIT: It did. The questions were HSAPQ on the defunct PACE format. Notable? I don't know... http://www.ihssbca.org/statistics/2009_ ... ail.php#t7

Frankly, I think any grail is notable given how rare of an accomplishment it is.

Yeah I was gonna say: I was pretty amazed when this happened to us. I quite literally told every subsequent opponent that day about Auburn's feat, even if it was slightly embarrassing.

IIRC Gov did it last year at some tournament in DC en route to a 740-0 victory.

Saint Joe's did it this year in a 715-0 victory at the Caesar Rodney Rider Bowl in April, but it was admittedly against a young B team.

Torrey Pines did it at this year's HFT mirror - in a first-bracket playoff match.

That said, grailing on the much-more-difficult NSC set is extremely impressive.

Maggie Walker got an andrew hart grail and did this in successive rounds

EDIT: I should probably note that during their grail gov came 20 points on a Kate Chopin bonus from achieving a holy grail. It was heartbreaking.

Yeah this is actually not that rare. Even we've done it before, admittedly against Longfellow C, at TJ last October.

St. Anselm's did it a couple weeks ago against GDS B at UMCP.

It happens probably quite a few times around here, but it is much harder on Nationals questions so i guess it's a big accomplishment this time.

EDIT: Here's the proof:

Does 18 for 18 count as a grail? Dorman pulled this off against Charter C at the 2008 TJIAT. It was a timed IS set and the reader only got through 18 questions. For real though, hats off to St. Anselm's for doing this at NSC. That's super impressive.

Two days ago in Texas, Cliff Lee had a perfect game through four innings and the lead as it was starting to rain.

Anyway, when I pointed out that Gonzaga grailed at HFT 2008, everybody on this board told me that it was really rude to point out when a team grails because it makes the losing team feel bad. Apparently our social mores have changed dramatically in the last year and a half.

Apparently this isn't as rare as originally thought.
Any instances of Andrew Hart Grails?

Are we going by the definition of "at least 10 tossups answered" and then 30ppb? If so, it's happened on occasion.

GDS at UMCP in September: http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... teamdetail
Gov at VCU in January: http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... teamdetail

Those are just the ones i know i've heard of at tournaments we went to this year.

I moderated this match and was pretty stunned that they missed those 20 points. It happened after like tossup 8 so i was like "aw man, no big deal" but then 12 tossups later i realized they were 20 points from a perfect game, and those were bonus questions that my kids confidently answered in another game that same round.

Just wanted to point out that whoever edited the QBWiki on Grail mistakenly put TP over Rancho Alamitos there as a "grail" when they won 640-30. If you "grail", the other team by definition cannot have a positive score; TP, as the stats indicate, went 18-2 that round.

Thanks; that's fixed. I had misread the 10 and -5 columns as 15 and 10, and assumed that the opponent points came from bouncebacks (if bouncebacks are in place, a grail with an opposing team having a positive score is possible).

I think he was referring to the tossup split. 18 for one team, 2 for another.
