Re: LIFT X 10/16/2010
There's a strong possibility of Kings Park bringing one team. Nothing's certain yet though; its our homecoming but for the few of us that aren't some way involved in PSATs or football, we're just arranging a chaperon. Our coach will swing you an email in the next few days

Bergen County Academies will bring either 1 or 2 teams. For now, mark us down as two teams, and I'll get back to you in a bit. We should have two buzzers, but no moderators.

Re: LIFT X 10/16/2010
KP's new administration just came down hard on us... As of now it looks like KP won't be able to attend, but I promise you that we're doing everything in our power to resolve that... Would you (Brother Nigel) be opposed to KP attending as an "unofficial" team?

Do you mind explaining why? This is really a shame. Why would they prevent you from attending a competition that's not that far away?WSchneider wrote:KP's new administration just came down hard on us... As of now it looks like KP won't be able to attend,

Re: LIFT X 10/16/2010
Well... Up to this point we've used school transportation for every event we've been going to, and our coach has been in attendance with us. In the past, the school's official policy has been that any parent may serve as a chaperon for any event, as well as any teacher, or guidance counselor, or administrator; basically as long as any adult was with us, they didn't care.Carangoides ciliarius wrote:Do you mind explaining why? That said, this Saturday is our homecoming, and our coach has other obligations to fulfill, so the plan was (and this plan, notably, was approved by our new principle) that my mother would chaperon the team, and we would individually plan for transportation (we agreed on a carpool, but that didn't matter). This morning, our principle told our coach that he "wasn't comfortable" with the idea of students that "[he] would be liable for" taking part in an event off of school grounds without a teacher present with them. While I completely understand his concern, it's just frustrating because it defies not only an accepted policy, but also his own consent.
We're in the process of working on attending unofficially... Hopefully we can resolve this with our new principle before it impacts our plans for other tournaments this year.

In all the (online) paperwork I can dig up, there's no written policy either way about supervision of off-campus activities
EDIT: I shouldn't have used the word official before... "De facto" is more appropriate...

Re: LIFT X 10/16/2010
So the resolution came to this: after a bit of an argument, it was agreed that the team would be allowed to attend with another teacher (not our coach, or anyone involved whatsoever in the quiz bowl team), and that we would be allowed to use the school's transportation... However in the future we must have our coach in attendence with us for all events; this is like a one-time deal....
Not quite the result I had hoped for but at least we get to go

Buses should pull up to the main entrance of the school (big stairs on the east side of the building), drop off the teams, and then pull around to the back of the school to park. The teams should proceed across the lobby and enter the cafeteria for bagels and juice. Please try to arrive by 8:15 AM. Call my cell phone if you are running late. (Cell phone # has been emailed to participating schools.)

The following 6 teams moved into the top bracket.
Bergan A, H Greeley A, St. Joseph A, Hunter, Seton Hall A, and White Plains A
They finished 1st or 2nd in their respective prelim bracket. They are now in a championship bracket where they carried over the game they played against the other team from their bracket and will now play the other 4 teams.

3rd: St. Joseph A (8-2, 337.0)

9th: White Plains B (6-4, 158.0)
10th: St. Joseph B (5-5, 168.5)
11th: Kings Park A (4-6, 123.0)
12th: H Greeley B (3-7, 76.0)
13th: Great Neck S A (6-4, 236.0)
14th: White Plains D (4-6, 86.5) (Tie broken by Head to Head result)
15th: White Plains C (4-6, 96.0)
16th: HHHW B (3-7, 94.0)
17th: Bergen B (2-8, 59.5)
18th: Locust Valley A (1-9, 73.5) (Their 1st tourney ever!)
19th: Bergen D (0-6, 70.0)
20th: North Shore B (1-5, 93.3) - left after Prelims
21st: OLMA (0-4, 46.3) - left after 4th game, last two prelim games K-berg Frosh sat in.
Championship bracket was the top 2 from each of the three prelim brackets with the result of game between the two carried over. (Teams did not want to stay late so it was the best compromise.) The other playoff brackets were comprised of the 3rd and 4th teams, and then for the most part the 5th and 6th teams.
Individual awards were given at the end of the Prelims: 1st - Alex (St. Joe A) with a 101.67 ppg, 2nd - Stephanie (Bergen A) 63.33 ppg. And in our tradition, a cheap Halloween mask was awarded to Peter (North Babylon) for the highest number of neg's in the Prelims.
One additional note of clarification: Teams were asked to evaluate themselves in terms of whether they thought they were the A, B or C....team from their school. That's why there was no Hunter A or B or North Shore A.

Re: LIFT X 10/16/2010
We were informed that LIFT X has been awarded GOLD status certification. This means the top 6 teams qualify for the PACE National Championship.
By NAQT rules, the top 15% (rounded up) also qualify for the NAQT National Championship. That means the top 4 teams can attend their Championship.
