SCOP Novice Tournament at Arizona State Univ - 10/23/2010

Post by Sun Devil Student »

Dear Quizbowlers:

On behalf of the Arizona State University quizbowl team, I am pleased to announce Arizona's first known fall invitational quizbowl tournament, a mirror of the SCOP Novice Tournament to be held October 23 (Saturday) at ASU's Tempe campus.

On the off-chance that anyone on this forum knows anyone at any Arizona high school, your assistance in informing those schools about this tournament would be highly welcomed. Our target audience is Arizona high schools, but we certainly won't discriminate against out-of-state high schools who are willing to travel so far.

Date: October 23, 2010

Location: Arizona State University, Tempe campus, Social Sciences building
This is the same location we have hosted past tournaments at ASU. Maps of the ASU campus can be found here: http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/ (click on "Tempe" to access the correct campus map)

Schedule:
8:00 - 8:30am - Registration (in Social Sciences building, room 105)
8:30 - 9:00am - Rules meeting to go over the rules and tournament format and answer questions.
9:00am - Morning rounds
approx. noon - Lunch break
1:00pm - Afternoon rounds

The tournament should take 10-12 rounds and will run until late afternoon or early evening.

Tournament format: Depending on the number of teams, either a full round-robin or a system of round-robin pools. Each team will be guaranteed several matches (our goal is at least 8-10 matches). All matches will consist of 20 tossups and bonuses, with tiebreakers as necessary. Tossups will have power-marks (similar to NAQT tossups), and bonuses will rebound (the team that answers a tossup gets the first shot at each bonus part, but if they get the bonus wrong, the opposing team will get a chance to "steal" the points). Note that this is slightly modified from standard NAQT rules, which do not have bonuses rebound.

Eligibility: All high school students can compete in this tournament.

Registration fee: The base registration fee for each school will be $40 per team (at most 4 students play at a time for each team) with the following discounts for each school:
-$5 for each fully-functional buzzer system (at least 4 working buzzers each side)
-$5 for each team from schools located outside the Phoenix metropolitan area (we'd like to see more teams from the rest of Arizona)
-$10 for each team from schools which have never played any kind of quizbowl before (as an incentive for less-established programs)

Please make all checks payable to "Sun Devil Quizbowl Club".

To register: E-mail [email protected] with the following information:
1) School name
2) Coach name and contact information
3) Number of teams you are entering
4) Number of buzzer systems you can bring

If your team has any working buzzer systems, please bring them; ASU Quizbowl has only one buzzer system. We will offer a $5 discount from your school's total registration fees for each buzzer system.

Feel free to e-mail [email protected] with any questions.

From the desert island of Phoenix, I bring you very pleasant surprise for the quizbowl world... a field update:

BASIS Scottsdale - 1 team, 1 buzzer system
Brophy - 5 teams, 5 buzzer systems
Desert Vista - 2 teams, 1 buzzer system
Fountain Hills - 1 team
Mountain Pointe - 1 team
University (Tolleson) - 2 teams

Total: 12 teams, including 5 new schools!

I've heard there may be a possible entry from Tri-City High School (Prescott) as well.

Certainly, if anyone on these forums knows of any other schools in Arizona and could help us get the word out, that would be great. If not, then we'll build up this island, one school at a time.

Over a month later, our stats are still not up, as ASU Quizbowl webmaster Greg is still behind on the website. In the meantime, quick results from this tournament:

Brophy won the tournament and placed all four of their teams in the top bracket. Desert Vista took home 2nd place and BASIS Scottsdale 3rd place to complete the top bracket. Consolation bracket, in order, was Desert Vista, University Tolleson, Mountain Pointe and Fountain Hills.

I'm assuming you did stats in SQBS? If so, then you can post stats in five easy steps:

1. Go here.
2. Create account (replace this step with "log in" for future tournaments).
3. Create "SQBS hosting" tournament and follow the resulting directions to create tournament.
4. Generate "full web report" in SQBS.
5. Upload each HTML file from the report where indicated.

Purely out of curiosity, are the stats posted anywhere?
