DR YAKUB (12/11/10) at the University of Maryland

Post by DumbJaques »

The Maryland Academic Quiz Team is pleased to announce DR YAKUB (Demonstrate Readily Your Academic Knowledge Using Buzzers), our second fall tournament this year, on Saturday, December 11, 2010. The tournament will run on NAQT IS-98. We hope this tournament's field will be just as competitive as that of our event last month (if not more so), though as with our previous tournaments we'll be structuring the format to ensure that all teams get a high amount of games against the most appropriate competition.

REGISTRATION:

To register, please email me at [email protected]. Let us know if you're interested/confirmed and how many teams you'll be sending - a running field will be updated below this post.

PRICING:

Base team fee: $70
Additional teams from the same school: -$10
Buzzer system: -$5/system (please ensure that your system has eight working ports and isn't prone to manic episodes, etc.)
Dedicated staffer/moderator: -$10
Minimum fee per team: $50

FORMAT:
Like last year, we plan on giving teams the chance to play a lot of quizbowl. There will likely be bracketed prelims followed by playoff brackets of some size and configuration depending on field size. As with last year, we will be running these brackets for anyone who enters this tournament, regardless of prelim performance - consolation rounds will run and be fully recorded (and placement fully resolved) for all teams who choose to stay. Teams will have the chance to leave after prelims (or whenever, I suppose, as this will be a kidnapping-free event), but are heavily encourage to take advantage of the extra games, which by definition will be the most competitively appropriate for all teams. The exact number of rounds won't be set until the field size is confirmed, but we'll strive for all teams to play 9+ games.

We finished the playoffs of our Fall Tournament by around 3:30, so I expect us to conclude all games at this event (excluding possible finals) by 4:00 pm.

QUESTIONS:

As mentioned, we'll be using NAQT IS-98 for this event. Rounds will consist of 20 tossups with bonuses - as with our earlier Fall tournament, computation tossups will be skipped (bonuses will be read as usual).

LOCATION/DETAILS:

The tournament will be held in room 0105 of Jimenez Hall University of Maryland, College Park. Registration will run from 8:15 - 8:45, with the first round starting as close to 9:00 AM as possible. Free parking is conveniently located in lot 1, which can be reached by entering campus drive from Route 1 and driving past the Stamp Student Union, Cole Field House, and a set of tennis courts on your right.

Feel free to email me with any questions or comments. Hope to see you there!

Ah, memories!

Anyway, mark CR down as "interested." I'm not sure if we can commit to 3 tournaments in a row in December, but i'm willing to think about it.

Scratch us from this. Sorry. This is just a weekend i can't commit to for a tournament, with the previous week and the following week already filled up.

I know a bunch of teams are supposedly planning to come, but I've received only a few actual registrations, so people should email me if they're planning to attend.

I've also received a request to move this tournament to Sunday, since Centennial's tournament is Saturday. Would this constitute a positive/negative for anybody? It's unlikely we'd do it unless it was overwhelmingly favorable, but I thought I'd float the idea.

Maggie Walker probably cannot make it if it is a Sunday. If it stays on Saturday we are certainly interested and we will know for sure one way or the other by Monday.

Someone played VHSL States last year with an interpreter. Having studied ASL for two years, I wouldn't think qb syntax would translate that well into it, but it can be and has been done.

Also, depending on the extent of the deafness, it's conceivable that one could hear well enough by using a hearing aid.

This is true to an exent (especially since quizbowl matches usually have very little background noise) but I think any student whose hearing is bad enough to be admitted to the Maryland School for the Deaf is past that point.

At one of our tournaments were able to accomodate a deaf team by putting the questions into a powerpoint which revealed the words one by one for the tossups. We then didn't read the questions aloud so there would be no advantage to hearing the question.

Moving to Sunday is a positive for us. While I cannot guarantee our attendance on that date as I haven't polled my students about dates on which tournaments are not scheduled, I can guarantee we won't be in attendace on the originally scheduled Saturday.

GDS will most likely not be able to attend if the tournament remains on Saturday. If the tournament is moved to Sunday, GDS could probably field at least one team. Sorry for the indefinite nature of this post.

Hey, I still haven't heard too many confirmations about this event, despite hearing from second-hand sources that various usual suspects are coming. On the flip side, I'm very excited that we've already got three brand new teams (at least on this circuit) registered for the tournament, and hope we can add a few more from some of the less-active Montgomery County programs.

As for the Saturday/Sunday issue, I've heard from just one team (who might not be attending anyway) opposed to Sunday, and just one team (who might not be attending anyway) opposed to Saturday. The tournament is not likely to move at this point unless I hear a bunch of teams voice such a desire very soon.

The field appears set, though in theory we'd still take additional teams if someone got in touch with me very soon. Teams should be in Jimenez Hall, room 0105 (basement lecture hall) for registration between 8:15 and 8:45. A short meeting and round 1 will follow.

I'm reachable at <> at any time if there are any issues, and of course by email if you have any last minute questions.

WJ is wondering the same thing, because we don't see a recent field update with our team on it. I asked my coach and he said that he is pretty sure that he sent an email for registration.

For some reason a huge and frightening amount of emails seem to have found their way to my spam filter. I just found both registrations and am currently trying to find any others by pouring through countless messages from West African entrepreneurs who seem intent on using my social security number to enlarge various parts of their body.

Teams who do not see their names on our current field list should email me ASAP - I'll certainly make allowances for anyone whose registration got lost in the shuffle this way, and you'll absolutely be playing the event. Just let me know so I can set the schedule.

You may want to prepare for a team or two to just show up in case. Glad to see George Mason, they've haven't had to actually rebuild in the past few years and have always done very well at the Saturday tournaments they've attended.

FWIW, I disabled my spam folder completely in 2007 when I found large numbers of email from a VHSL region co-ordinator in my spam folder.

Our team really enjoyed going to this and had tons of fun playing, so thanks for running a great tournament! All of the moderators we had were pretty awesome, and it was run fairly smoothly, although some of the questions were a bit, let's say, sub-par, which isn't your fault of course.

Also, hello Neg. I believe you completely owned our team in the last round. :P

I just wanted to sincerely apologize to every team that attended this tournament. I have no idea what happened between our coach and the players on our team that were supposed to go, but ditching a tournament is totally classless and I am sorry for all of the troubles we caused. Regardless what happened with that, I should have made sure that the tournament director was aware that Ophir and I had not been planning on attending when we signed up. I just assumed that the message was passed along when our coach registered, which was clearly not the case. My impression was that our other players would still be going, but clearly that didn't happen and once again, I apologize.

I certainly don't think there's anything either you or Ophir need to apologize for, as the only thing you did was help save us a few minutes by being reachable early Saturday morning by phone to help us figure out the situation. I too regret that WJ wasn't able to make the event - actively - but wish to iterate that I in no way believe Kuo-Kai to be responsible.
