Classic City Classic 2/19/2011

Post by gwaustin4 »

UGA is pleased to announce that the annual Classic City Classic will continue again this year, if only a little later in the year than usual.

We are using NAQT IS-98, so the tournament will be Varsity level, though naturally JV teams are welcome and encouraged to come as well. As of now, in pursuit of trying to make this PACE-platinum, I would like to give all teams at least 10 games and not use single elimination, all with the goal of still finishing by 4:30. I feel confident I can assemble an experienced group of readers to make this tournament run more efficiently than past UGA-hosted events. In continuance of the goal to hasten the pace of the tournament, I would like to use a Dominoes connect to get free pizza lunch to all teams in attendance, allowing for a shortened lunch break.

Rates will be $70 for the first team, $65 for the second, and $60 for all subsequent teams. There will be a $5 buzzer discount up to three buzzers. Also, there will be a $10 reader discount. Discounts will also be offered for distance traveled and other similar handicaps; ask about a discount when you register if that may apply for you. Trophies will be given to the top three teams and individual scorers will be recognized.

More details are to come as soon as I gauge likely field size and worker constraints, so stay posted on that. I may be reached at [email protected] with questions, comments/advice, or if you would like to register.

Wes,

You know we will try to be there with a couple of teams and buzzers. I see a potential challenge with finding a pristine NAQT IS set this year, but IS-100 might work really well. The only place in GA that is using it is Savannah Country Day, and there is not a large field overlap with your tournament usually. Of course the timing will be a little tricky, but the spring is more open in GA than the fall. Let me know if I can help you in any way. Go Dawgs!

Yeah, a shift in leadership and the withdrawal of quite a few club members makes this very possible.

Also, in relation to cool things... how could you not mention the free pizza?

Wes,

Both Chattahoochee and Brookwood have already heard the IS-98 set at tournaments outside of Georgia. Would you continue with the use of IS-98, knowing that would exclude Brookwood and Chattahoochee, or switch to some other set?

Both IS #96 and IS #100 have been heard at other tournaments within Georgia (Cobb County/Gwinnett County and Savannah Country Day), so we thought using #98 was the best solution.

(All of the spring sets are also in use in Georgia: #102 and #104 at Cedar Shoals on 1/29 and 3/19; #105 is the state championship set.)

I am aware of this and I agree that IS-98 would be the best set to use. According to the NAQT website, IS-100 is also now being used for the Fulton County Championship, which means that teams like Chattahoochee/Centennial/Alpharetta will hear it there.

I personally don't want to see the Classic City Classic go away from using an NAQT set. I hope that enough top Georgia teams will want participate that there will still be a competitive field, even without Chattahoochee or Brookwood.

Because of the weather, we have to postpone this until another date. I'm currently trying to decide which date would work best.

The tournament will now occur on February 19th. Rescheduling was a hard decision, and a weighed a lot of factors. I understand the conflict with NGCSU's tournament, but, considering their use of an A set, I felt there would be less overlap than with other days. The best other option is the 12th, but since a lot of teams go to the BJVSB, I don't know how well that would work. If the 12th works much better for you, email me at [email protected]

A field update would be greatly appreciated. Besides my own team, I have no idea who is planning to participate in the rescheduled version of this event.

The field has dropped from the previous 24 to the following confirmed teams:
Centennial (1)
Central Gwinnett (2)
Chattahoochee (1-2)
Dorman (4)
Heritage (2)
Mountain View (1)

Additionally, the following teams have either expressed interest or were registered for the original incarnation and have not yet reconfirmed attendance:
Alpharetta (1-2)
Eastside (1

There is, of course, still room in the tournament, if any other teams are now able to attend with the date change.

Chattahoochee will most likely be able to field only 1 (one) team for this so go ahead and put our second team at the top of a Waiting List, which, I understand, you may not use if you end up with a smaller field. Thanks!

Wes,

Will you be sending out further information about the tournament soon (meeting time, location, etc.)? I have a parent accompanying the team on Saturday, since I am unable to attend, and I would like to be able to pass this information on to the parent in the next day or two.

Thanks!

Results
1st- Centennial
2nd- Dorman A
3rd- Dorman B
4th- Central Gwinnett

STATS: http://www.qbwiki.com/statistics/2011_C ... dings.html

The tournament happened today. Eleven teams competed in a full round robin, which finished by around three. At the end of the round robin, Dorman A had one loss to Centennial, who went undefeated in the prelims. Dorman won the first game of the resulting advantaged final before losing the second game by a close ten points, 355-345.

Thanks go out to Robert Slade, Holly Tinkle, and Greg (sorry I don't know your last name), who were instrumental in everything from stats to setting up rooms. You guys were willing and able to help out with a lot of the little things that build up, and for volunteer workers you guys were just... awesome. Also, thanks go out to Professor Trandel, Siddharth Dhingra, and Rishi Rachavelpula. And of course, to all the players, sponsors, and parents who made the trip to Athens, thank you so much for attending. I hope you all enjoyed the tournament and the pizza, and I look forward to seeing you guys at the next tournament we host.

Robert Slade, Holly Tinkey and Greg Weinstein are all former students of mine and are three of the best people you could ever hope to meet!

I wasn't able to be at the tournament yesterday but, from what I hear, everything went extremely well. Thanks, Wes, for running a good tournament (and for the free pizza.)
