Georgia Tech HSNCT Warm-up: April 16, 2011

Post by Marble-faced Bristle Tyrant » Tue Nov 09, 2010 12:10 am

Georgia Tech is hosting a high school tournament tentatively scheduled for on April 16, 2011. This will mainly function as a warm-up for national tournaments, especially NAQT HSNCT which is being held in Atlanta this upcoming May, but any high school team is welcome to come. We plan on are using this year's Division II SCT (NAQT college regionals), which should be pretty accessible to good high school teams and a great way to prepare for HSNCT. On the off chance that NAQT doesn't let us use SCT, we have the options of an IS set, an HSAPQ set, or GSAC by Maggie Walker's team.

We will be holding this in the Instructional Center (IC), a change from our usual venue in Howey. For those of you who have attended GT tournaments in recent years, you will be glad to hear that this will mean less walking, less stairs, and less navigating labyrinthine hallways. On the potential downside, it might mean that we'll have to arrange teams one in front of the other in some rooms instead of the usual side-by-side due to amphitheater-style seating and missing chairs. If anyone sees a problem with this, let me know. The IC should hold ~32 teams, though I doubt we'll reach that limit due to the nature and date of the tournament.

If you are interested in attending this tournament, either post here or contact me at fbilimoria3 at gatech dot edu with number of teams, buzzers, staffers, and any other pertinent information. I mentioned before that the IC could accommodate 30 teams-- bear in mind that our past 20-team tournaments were only doable with staffers from other schools, so please bring some experienced workers if you can. Freelance staffers are also very welcome.

Fees and discounts:
$70 team base fee

-$5 per buzzer set (maximum of two for the discount, though you are welcome to bring more)
-$10 per staffer
-$10 per 200 miles traveled (based on shortest route given by Google Maps, applies to each team a school brings)
-$10 per extra team

Make checks out to "Academic Team".

Central Gwinnett will probably bring one team. It's too far out to be able to say 100%, but I can let you know for sure once we get into second semester. I would love to see a mirror of Maggie Walker's GSAC set as it's always a strong set and I don't think it's ever been used in Georgia before.

Depending on what Alabama and NAQT think of changing the SCT date, we may end up moving this to April as a sort of nationals warmup. That is also heavily dependent on how many teams (Georgia schools seem to wrap things up after the state tournament) are interested in attending.

I actually just got word from AJ that the date is set in stone, so it looks like we will in fact reschedule.

Unless, of course, my teammates would rather host a high school tournament instead of going to SCT. Also unlikely.

The tentative new date is April 16, though it might change as more coaches respond to my email. We are now considering mirroring Division II SCT since this is going to be a pre-nationals event; however, teams not attending any nationals are also certainly welcome to come. I'll edit the original post to reflect the new information later today.

I have just gotten word that NAQT will let us use SCT as long as Clemson, who used it last year, doesn't want to use it. I find this unlikely since, as far as I know, the Clemson team is defunct this year.

If MUT happens, I suppose that's another option, but then high school teams would have to avoid the college events using the set.

Assuming NAQT allows us, yes. Now that I'm looking at the Culver thread, looks like Dorman will have to choose between the two sites.

Schools need to start confirming teams and whatnot for this.

Also-- and this should go without saying-- if you attend SCT in any role (spectator, worker), you cannot play in this tournament. That goes for both divisions, unless I get confirmation that the sets don't overlap.

Lastly, we'll really need staffers for this to work. I hope that some experienced coaches can spare time away from their teams to read.

As usual, the sets do overlap- so anyone who plans to play on the Division II SCT should avoid staffing Division I rooms as well.

My high school might be interested, but no guarantees.
Perhaps it was noted above, but what sets will be used at this tourney? The same ones read at Culver?
Also, is this a standard format tourney, 20 TU with bonuses?

Thanks!

Yes, as of Sunday we are officially using SCT division II, the same set Culver will be using for the Midwest Championship in May. If we don't play straight NAQT-style with the clock, we'll just do 20/20 (my preference, actually, but I know some folks want the clock).

Edit: Argh. Well, at least I got to add stuff about the clock.

First, can I get some contact info for Station Camp High School? With that said...

Directions and parking:

This tournament will take place in the Instructional Center (IC). The School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE) has directions here. As you can see here, we'll be in the building farthest from the Recreation Center across the street. Registration will take place in room 103, the large lecture hall that's the first room you see if you go in the doors facing the courtyard and other ISyE buildings.

Please refer to this map for the following. Visitor parking is labeled with green:
There is a visitor lot (Area 3) just to the south of our venue. According to the Parking website, it is $1.50 per hour, but I have no idea if that is enforced on weekends. A bit farther away to the east is the Student Center lot (Area 2), which is definitely free on weekends. Even further away to the north is the State Street lot (Area 4), which is free (as far as we know; we haven't had any trouble using it for tournaments) on non-gamedays. For now, I would recommend the Area 2 lot because of the guaranteed lack of cost and reasonable distance. There are also stretches of metered parking that are free on weekends.

On format and statistics:

Mainly due to fear of lacking the manpower (we've had a bunch of regulars stop showing up since the semester started) and equipment, we won't be timing this tournament; instead we'll just read 20/20 each round. This will certainly keep this tournament from being a perfect simulation of HSNCT, but, as a tradeoff, teams will be guaranteed to hear more questions. Also along the reasoning that hearing more questions is better, we'll be rebracketing for playoffs, instead of using elimination. Bonuses will not bounce back.

In the interest of making the statkeeper's job-- that is, my job-- easier, please don't use pseudonyms or rotate names each round or anything like that. It will also make NAQT's and PACE's jobs easier when making schedules for their respective nationals. Giving your first name and last initial should suffice. If you legitimately need to use pseudonyms because you're attending without your school administration's approval, then please let me know in advance.

In the interest of making our job of creating balanced prelim brackets easier, please have your strongest team as your A team, your second-strongest team as your B team, and so on. It is also fine to have multiple teams roughly equal in strength, but try to follow this guideline as best as you can.

I will be reiterating this and the parking information via email when tournament time gets closer.

Just got some important information regarding parking.

GT will be holding an annual campus footrace Saturday morning. According to the Parking website, metered parking along Ferst Drive will be closed (that page doesn't mention the visitors metered parking, but I think it's safe to assume it'll be closed too). Here at the bottom they say that the Student Center lot I recommended will still be open; I'm guessing they'll still be open to anyone because there's nothing about it on the Parking website.

The metered parking will probably open back up around noon, because the campus shuttles are delayed to start at that time.

(huh, the Parking link says "Connect with Tech", which is a totally different event. Guess they were too lazy to make a new page and edited the original one)

Update: the lots will indeed be open and there will be police to direct traffic.

Edit: currently doing playoffs. Four dropped teams plus one no-show messed up my Chinese elements theme, but oh well.

This was the most well run tournament that we have attended all year; it was also laid back and really fun! I thought the readers, the questions and everything else were perfect. Thanks to Farrah and the rest of the Georgia Tech team for all of their hard work in putting this together.

For future rankings/seedings purposes, I take it that was a hybrid Dorman A/B team and that the other half will be going to the Midwest Championship next month to hear the same set? I'm assuming that was Chatt at full strength and Alpharetta had their #2 player playing solo (most of these GA results- this tournament fortunately expected- don't include individual stats so it's hard to tell).

Great to see DAR continuing to travel and Flowery Branch seems to be showing up to more tournaments than usual this year.

Also, this trend of teams leaving early seems to be continuing across GA tournaments- I recall the Norcross tournament had that issue as well.

Teams not staying until the end has been an ongoing issue at Georgia tournaments this year, since teams are accustomed to single elimination playoffs and to leaving by early afternoon as has been the norm in Georgia in the past. However, 15 teams did stay to play all 11 rounds of challenging DII Sectionals questions, so that is a positive.

Chattahoochee was missing 2 of our top 5 players for the full day, and 1 of our top 3 players had to leave (for prom) before the last prelim game (round 9). Another 2 of our original 6 players had to leave (also for prom) before the playoffs, so we played the 2 playoff games with only 3 players.

Well, I have to say I really enjoyed this tournament: the questions were challenging, time management was great, and we got to hear 11 rounds before 5:30. Thanks for hosting; we'll come again if it sees a second Iteration!

One thing, would it be possible to merge the "playoffs" and the preliminary matches?

I'll get around to posting a more complete writeup later today, but I'd like to note that Ola had a player fall sick and I got the impression that people in the Mountain View group had jobs or some other commitment, so it was more than a "we didn't make the top bracket so we're leaving" thing.

Awesome tournament.

I was only kind of mad about the prelim brackets, which placed alpharetta, hooch, dorman, and central in the same bracket. I thought that this gave norcross an unfair advantage in getting into the top bracket.

And Adam Silverman is good. Really good.

According to Eric Huff, it was their "full B team" and their A team will be at Culver.

I'll get around to this eventually.

I also just realized that the Chinese elements without water makes sense, since the rain didn't affect the tournament at all and water was the one I took out (note that the prelim bracket names were chosen because of Friday night's weather).

So, this tournament happened. Thanks to NAQT for writing and letting us use SCT Division II, and thanks to all the teams who came to compete. The field-- and this isn't at all to belittle the weaker teams or to chastise the ones who couldn't make it-- wasn't nearly as large or as strong as I'd initially hoped for when we first began planning, but everyone seemed to have a not-bad time, so I'm not going to complain. I did get a report of a "Georgia Tech doesn't have math in their tournament" complaint, though, hahaha. Basically, this was a very nice way to end my time as an official member of the Georgia Tech team.

Congratulations to Centennial, who went undefeated the whole day; Adam Silverman also won the top individual award. Also congratulations to the rest of the top bracket, Chattahoochee, Dorman, and Norcross. We gave out a ton of book prizes, including the remainder of the bunch that Connie Prater gave us-- thanks again for that!

The day started off with little confusion. The weather didn't delay anything, though some teams did have a bit of a walk due to the Pi Mile race, and mostly everyone was in the IC by 9:00. We were able to smoothly transition from a 20-team schedule to a 19-team-with-one-latecomer one (sharing emergency contact numbers is great, guys!), work out a room reservation conflict with another group, and managed to start rounds about 9:30 or so (correct me if I'm wrong). Prelims ended during the 3:00 hour, and playoffs started some time after 4:00, ending about 5:30. Definitely felt weird getting out of there while it was still broad daylight. After the tournament ended and everyone else had left, there was an impromptu match between Kunal, Mr. Rountree, and Ms Hirsch, though one of them or Adam will have to say what happened there because I had to leave.

A big thank you goes to the guest staffers Holly Tinkey for Central Gwinnett, Chris Pae from Berkmar, Emerald from Woodstock, the two Mountain View and two Flowery Branch people (sorry that I didn't get your names), and especially to Richard Dunlap who just contacted me out of the blue offering to help. We could not have done it without you guys.

I'd also like to thank Gregory and Adam for putting up with all my emails regarding both running this tournament and running the club in general. It was very nice working with you guys (and the rest of the club), and I enjoyed seeing you all again. It was also nice to meet the couple newcomers from this semester. Hopefully we can meet up again at future events.

Wasn't Alpharetta their second scorer solo and Dorman at less than full strength?

That, and looking at the PPB, it's obvious that two of the top four teams were in one bracket, and the other two of the top four teams were in the other bracket. They very clearly bested the rest of the field on PPB: 18.41, 18.15, 19.91, 15.00. No one else hit 13 on the day. How is this not fair? I say, nice job, bracket-makers.
