Parkersburg High School Tournament - March 12

Post by AKKOLADE »

Parkersburg High School’s Quiz Bowl Team in Parkersburg, West Virginia, will be hosting their second ever Parkersburg Academic Tournament on March 12, 2011. The PAT is an academic quiz bowl tournament open to any high school or middle school that wishes to compete. This tournament will start at 9 a.m. and will run until 5 p.m.

The tournament directors are Fred Morlan and Wayne Clark.

The PAT will be a qualifying event for both the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence and the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament.

The 2011 NSC will be held at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois on June 4 and 5, 2011. At least the top two teams at the PAT will qualify for the 2011 NSC, with more possible depending on the size of the field and PACE’s certification results.

The 2011 HSNCT will be held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Atlanta, Georgia on May 27, 28, and 29, 2011. The top 15% of the field will qualify for the 2011 HSNCT.

The PAT will be using NAQT’s IS-104. NAQT’s math computation tossups will not be used. Matches will consist of 20 tossups and 20 bonuses.

Teams may be made up of up to six players. Five players may play at a time for a team. Once a player is assigned to a team’s roster at the start of the tournament, those players cannot be moved between teams.

While the final number of games guaranteed for teams will vary depending on staff available and the number of teams registered, every effort will be made to guarantee each team at least seven games of play.

We plan on grouping teams in brackets in the morning and having teams play a round robin against that group. Teams will then be rebracketed into groups of similar performance based on the results of the morning and play another round robin against the new group of teams.

Thank you very much for your interest in the tournament, and we hope you are able to attend this year’s Parkersburg Academic Tournament.

Entry fees:

$60 per team, minimum of $25 per team.

Teams get $5 off their entry fee for each working buzzer system they bring to the tournament. Buzzer systems must have at least ten individual buzzers. There is no limit to the number of these discounts you can claim.

Teams get $15 off their entry fee for each experienced, competent moderator they can bring to the tournament. There is no limit to the number of these discounts you can claim. The moderator must be able to assist for the entire day, and must be able to efficiently finish rounds. Please contact the tournament director ahead of time if you plan on claiming this discount.

Teams get $5 off their entry fee for traveling over 200 miles. Further travel discounts may be available.

Teams that have not played quiz bowl prior to September 2009, or teams that have previously played quiz bowl but had a recent period where they were not active, will pay the minimum entry fee.

To register for this tournament, please contact Fred Morlan at [email protected].

Payment can be made as either a check or in cash. All payment is due the day of the tournament.

We're up to a bare minimum of 16 teams, with more practically a guarantee to be present.

We're just:
  • two hours southeast of Columbus
  • two and a half hours south of Pittsburgh
  • three hours south of Cleveland
  • three and a half hours southeast of Cincinnati
(I'd ramble about Kentucky, but the Governor's Cup state championship is that day)

Anyway, point is: it's not that far for teams in the general area, and we're already putting together a great field.

We had already committed our budget to Battle of the Burgh the following week, so sadly we aren't able to do this. Here's to hoping the Parkersburg High School Tournament goes well!

Of course not, Pony Sal Fasano doesn't have digits! That's why he only hits .221 .

Check should be made out to "Parkersburg High School Academic Team." You'll have an invoice tomorrow, if all goes well.

Hadn't posted in so long I guess I didn't know about the rule.

BTW, I saw Sal Fasano play a couple of years ago, at Colorado Springs against the Salt Lake City :bees:

Man, even when he was good, he wasn't very good. Also in that game were several washed up/never were players from the Angels system.

What passes for AAA baseball out west is pretty low quality.

Thanks to Joe Bellas and David Jones, coaches of Tippecanoe and Northmont respectively, for their help as moderators during the tournament; they vastly improved the quality of the tournament with their help and attendance. I'd also like to thank Craig Smith for helping me all day in the control room.
