Team California NASAT Tryouts - IRC
Team California NASAT Tryouts - IRC
I am planning to ask R. for permission to use the DII ICT set to hold tryouts for Team California over the IRC, barring other good options (people will have already seen NAQT's SCT sets, ACF Regionals, all of the harder high school sets, and all of the lower difficulty college sets). I do want input on the set though. I am wondering what day starting from April 11th to before HSNCT works for the most people? I won't be around on April 15-17 because of ACF Nationals, so that weekend is out. Post your thoughts here, but if you are interested, please send me an email at [email protected]. Post here to express interest for yourself or for your teammates, but don't register here. Whatever time we end up deciding will not be divulged to the public just in case.

As a suggestion, you could use tinychat to do the tryouts. All you need is a microphone (in built ones usually don't give very quality), and you can just say the tossups rather than pasting them out (type buzz to buzz and answer by typing answer etc). This makes it more like a real tryout, quicker, and prevents cheating.

I would be interested. I will speak to the others in TP.

I second the idea of using Tinychat. I could do most dates in April that are not in the third week.

It looks like everyone wants me to use TinyChat so I will, after I borrow someone's microphone.

I also prefer TinyChat since IRC sometimes fails on me. Generally, weekends in April are going to be busy for me with the exception of next weekend. We could try weekdays after school on the 3 weeks between the 11th and the 29th, but this is high pressure AP study time, so other people might have problems with doing it then.

Has the date been decided? Also, my tinychat won't work, because the shockwave keeps crashing...

How does Sunday, May 1st work for everyone? Alternately, Wednesday or Friday evening next week? The set will be MUT and the whole thing shouldn't take any longer than two or three hours.

They will be held on http://tinychat.com/ next Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:30-9 PM. The room will be called "nasat." There are two days so that if you can't make one, you can maybe make the other. If you are coming, please sign in with your real name. I will be reading tossups out loud from a microphone, with people typing "buzz" in the chatroom.
The evaluation will be subjective, but will be based on
- depth of knowledge in parts of the distribution
- breadth of knowledge across the distribution
- threshold of accuracy in buzzes
- breadth of knowledge
- specific consistent knowledge of second and third parts in specific categories.
I hope to see several of you there.

Teammates want me to verify that a webcam-less computer can be used for this?

Re: Team California NASAT Tryouts - IRC
To answer the two questions above: there will be no withdrawals; just like in real matches, the second person to win the buzzer race isn't immediately asked for the answer after the first person negs. So everyone will need to buzz again.
Also, any computer with internet access should be able to participate in this (correct me if I'm wrong) with only the chat functionality. You can just type buzz whenever you'd like to buzz, I'd call out your name, and you'd type in your answer.
