For those not watching on the stream, LASA I think has answered the first 8 tossups and is up something like 235-0 on State College.

I noticed that the Bel.-SLA score hadn't been updated on the spreadsheet while all the others have been updated, and so your report confirms my suspicion that a protest is being adjudicated.

Well, since there has been a protest, immediately after lunch, there will be special "Airing of Grievances" and "Feats of Strength" rounds featuring the team from Seven Lakes A having exactly 1 minute and 42 seconds on the main stage to Grieve (as such), with that followed by the strongest member of the Seven Lakes A squad taking on Matt Bruce in a best-of-five arm-wrestling series, after which point, the actual quiz bowl games will resume.

Does the small school playoffs have a loser's bracket? And if so, is it only double elimination if you have a 5-5 or better record and the 4-6's get eliminated with one loss?

Here are scoresheets (to the best of my ability) for the two final games. Some tossups may be attributed incorrectly, and I was confused on the protests, not that either of them mattered. Congratulations to both teams on an outstanding tournament.

Thanks a lot to everybody who helped make the Google Doc work as well as it did. I know that Dan Don and Dwight worked hard to update it during the day, and Harry helped a lot by reporting the scores, and we had about ten regular tweeters. Harry's Sunday brackets worked pretty much perfectly.

I know that this was far from perfect--scores were often posted several hours after matches or not at all, performance was slow at times, and it took time to follow a team or figure out who was doing well. Also, the fact that Harry had to track down scoresheets meant that there was less in-match blogging. This is the type of information that works better in a database than a spreadsheet--a spreadsheet was easier for me to set up, but more difficult to get information out of.

This would work perfectly if NAQT's stats software regularly posted web updates, which would require a significant amount of coding work by NAQT and a hotel with internet access in all stat rooms.

If anybody has ideas to improve this effort (specifically the posting of HSNCT results during the tournament), I would love to find out about them.

It was set up really well, and NAQT allowed me to just hang out in the stat room feeding scores all morning. It seems possible, though perhaps low priority, to have four people, one in each saturday stat room, doing the same thing. It's just a matter of constructing a spreadsheet about ten times as elaborate as the sunday one (maybe teach it to count wins as well somehow?) then assigning the manpower to feeding it. I certainly think it's more valuable to have that sunday one, but now that that is figured out, maybe? I dunno.

Is anything analogous planned for NSC?

There's only one stat room (several control rooms, but all scoresheets end up in the same place), and it generally has internet access.

If Jim doesn't wish to or doesn't get around to integrating (completing?) such functionality in his software—which would, of course, be by far the most efficient way to do this—then there is a chance that I will work on something to this end during the summer.

I did some brief looking back to determine the teams with the longest current streak of making the playoffs:

13 Detroit Catholic Central (every HSNCT ever)
10 Dorman
10 Maggie Walker Governor's School
10 Thomas Jefferson
9 Dunbar
9 State College
6 Dorman B (!)
5 Arcadia, Bergen County Academies, Eden Prairie*, Georgetown Day, Rancho Bernardo*
4 Grosse Pointe North, Kellenberg, La Jolla, LASA, Loyola Academy, Solon, Torrey Pines, Walton

*-includes a year where only their B team qualified for playoffs (EB '11; RB '08)

If we're following baseball rules, missing a day doesn't break up a hitting streak, so add Chattahoochee to this list: made playoffs in 2007, did not attend in 2008, made playoffs in 2009, made playoffs in 2010, and made playoffs in 2011. (4 straight top 25 finishes to boot.)

9: Dunbar A, Brookwood
8: TJ B, Dorman B, Walton A, St. John's
7: Solon, Wilmington Charter A
6: GDS, Bergen A, GPN, Santa Monica, New Trier

Some State College statistics since I hear Julie Gittings is retiring as coach after this season: since they first attended the HSNCT in 2000, SC has placed in the top 8 every year except 2002 (nine in a row, now), including top-3 finishes in six of the last seven. However, this is the first time they've won since their first appearance in 2000. They've also placed in the top eight in all thirteen incarnations of the PACE NSC (if we count a 4th place in one of the two playoff brackets), with eight finishes in the top three.

Absolutely remarkable numbers. Her teams in 2006 and 2010 so nearly won titles; in 2009 they played a really tight semifinal with an excellent Dorman team. Every SC team I've seen was of the highest standard, and I'm sure the trend continues in years I've been absent. A deserving championship is a great way to send her off.
