Today at the tournament at Bryant High in Tuscaloosa:

Q: "What power did the American character on 'Captain Planet' possess?"

Me: *BUZZ* "Um, the power to bring pollution down to zero..."

Ma-Ti, the "Heart" Planeteer, was also from (South) America. Of course, he didn't really have a power as such.

??? He had the most important power of all, the power of heart! Or so the opening credits would have us believe. . .

And just to make sure this thread does not become one of those stimulating but ultimately uninspiring discussions about Captain Planet, I can at least report on one of the best bad neg opportunities I've ever heard: At TJIAT on saturday, a tossup on google included a clue something along the lines of "you can 'whack' it." I sincerely hope that someone who posts here was depraved and hilarious enough to take a shot at that one. No bad negs thread would be complete without such an account.

The question gives a recent year that marked the beginning of the tradition of whacking it. If that poorly conceived neg had occurred, I am relatively certain I'd have known about it.

stupid repeats

Post by dtaylor4 »

at sterling 1-15-05

After correctly answering a question on a quote from "Chicago" by Sandburg in a previous round:

What author of "Cornhuskers" and "Chicago Poems" *buzz*

George Sand

*teammate smacks me in the head*

but the worst part is, the other team didn't get it right either, they left it for dead and didn't ring in.

this one's by a teammate who will remain nameless but will always have that scar on the back of his head from my hand:

What current, running from the east coast of the united states*other team buzzes and misses* up and across the Atlantic *buzz by teammate*

his answer: North Atlantic Current

*I reach behind one teammate and smack him in the back of the head*

Before every match I try to reiterate what one is supposed to do when the other team negs early: sit on it until the question is done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That wasn't the worst of the Sterling tourney though.

Math: Give both values for x. BUZZ
Me: What? I didn't buzz- Oh no! Ah! Umm, uh, -1 and 4 (they were counting me down)

I didn't actually buzz, so much as I had an twitchy buzzer thumb that didn't appreciate me for not beating my teammate on a tossup for "God Bless America" (they said Sousa).

I sure hope that your moderator didn't say "Sousa" since Berlin did "God Bless America". I thought I read Berlin when I read that tossup.

There's actually some fairly explicit sexual detail in Coming of Age in Samoa, so this isn't so bad as it might otherwise seem if the tossup started-out talking about that.

This one wasn't a neg, but its a good story and deserves to be in here...

Question: This emperor was crowned (blah blah) in England (or something like that) *other team trys to buzz* (none of their buzzers is working, so none light up, they start hootin' and hollerin')

Moderator: OK. I can see your trying to *me buzz*

Me: Sorry, I was just being a smart alec.

Other team: (wrong answer)

*I buzz again* Me: (sit idly for a copule seconds) and say "Constantine"

Moderator looks at me, looks at his paper, looks back at me, looks back at his paper, mumbles to himself

Moderator: Yeah, that's right but I can't give it to you, you had way more than three seconds (i wasted a lot of precious time with my smart alec buzz)

Me: Your not serious, right? (I had pulled this answer completly and totally out of my foot, my ear, and any some other unmentionable places)

Not a neg by me (was by the other team) but it makes for good small talk, now doesn't it? NOTE: THIS WHOLE ORDEAL WASTED ABOUT THREE MINUTES

Other team: THE US NAVAL ACADEMY...

I guess they were on the right track at least, but seeing as their isn't an ocean for like 1,000 miles....

in hamlet, hamlet does accuse claudius of whoring his mother, and if you watch the gibson movie (i have seen the olivier, gibson, branagh, and hawke versions of hamlet), during the scene where hamlet is with his mother in her bedchamber, he has her in a certain position on the bed and the headboard is going back and forth

A valid point, but the question hadn't given a hamlet clue when the buzz was made (I'm pretty sure). Definately worthy of the thread.
