Oh man, this has gotta be my worst neg since middle school; I'm just glad it happened in practice.
This is after the question has made it explicitly clear that they are looking for a compound and after they have given its chemical formula:
Right Answer: Lactic Acid
Horribly, terribly wrong answer: Yeast
In my defense, however, the question had just said something about air pockets in bread.

Woooooooow... I hope that wasn't our team. They have been trained to guess "Treaty of Paris" if they ever don't know a treaty.rchschem wrote:Heard at a recent tournament:

In the same tournament (different rounds):
Hemmingway for e e Cummings
Hemmingway for Dos Passos
Hemmingway for Masefield
Hemmingway for Hammett
Hemmingway for Maugham
And, it was (truly) strictly coincidence that:
1. the tournament was in Oak Park.
2. the teams that missed this a lot were the two local schools.

J.S, I could see where that would not necessarily be that bad of a neg....might have been taking a bit of a risk, but I hope no one gave you too tough a time over it.....even for someone so deeply seeded with science knowledge as yourself.Bubiyuqn wrote:From a member of my team:

Oh, no it wasn't me, it was my team member, and I do have to admit that it wasn't a terrible neg. The question mentioned something about it being used as heart medicine, but given that it was on television and seemingly so incorrect, I thought it was pretty funny.
Here's one from me that was pretty good awhile ago in practice. Topic is British History or something of that sort
Right Answer: King Edward the Eighth
Me: King Charles the Third...wait...
I suppose that's what I get for European History being at 7:30 in the morning.

That 9th article of the Constitution thing actually happened the exact same way to a team we were playing at either regionals or sectionals this year; you probably know which, Trevkeeper, considering it had to be the same question. Needless to say, when the poor guy on the other team said it, I nearly fell out of my chair with the effort of suppressing my giggles.
I think this happened two years ago (maybe last year, but not sure...)
The question had to do with a category that was basically "nuts and berries"... which meant the question or answer could have something to do with it....
So the lead-in is like... "yadda yadda... identify this large labial flatulation..."
Answer Given: Queef
Right Answer: Raspberry
As a coach, I almost had a heart attack in the back of the room.

Honestly, while it seems stupid now, I don't feel that bad. We won the match, but more importantly, it could've easily been (SOMETHING ELSE). I really had no idea what I was doin by buzzing in so early.

Auguste RODIN, with an I, is a short, bearded Frenchman who sculpts and looks like this.
RODAN, with an A, originally starred in "Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster," in which he helped Godzilla and Mothra defeat King Ghidorah. He looks like this.
Couldn't resist... though there is a resemblance...

Lies. Rodan starred in his own movie first. In fact, there were two of them in the original Rodan movie.cornfused wrote: RODAN, with an A, originally starred in "Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster," in which he helped Godzilla and Mothra defeat King Ghidorah. He looks like this.

Sigh......the original Rodan picture from Japan featured a gigantic, hulking French artist destroying Tokyo. When the realized no one would buy it, they replaced French artist with pterosaur-like creature....the rest is history. Hence, the spellings are somewhat interchangablecornfused wrote:and Coach "tegan"... cuz I just gotta...

Anyone buying that? I guess not.
Its not an excuse, but I had just finished watching "Final War", in which RODAN (not Rodin) made an appearance.
And Bruce is absolutely correct.....Rodan was a star in his own right before jumping on Gojira's (coat)tail.
And now, back to the regularly scheduled "Bad Negs" forum. End transmission.

Here's a great one from our practice last Monday (from the 2003 ICT set):
Wrong: Academic Decathlon Nationals
Right: Frozen Four
There was also a very, very strong temptation to neg with "Kenny" (from South Park) on a tossup from last weekend's ICT, which a Virginia player finally yielded to. The correct answer was Uncle Duke (from Doonesbury).

Apparently, the Memphis thing was about the Grizzlies relocating there. I wasn't really paying attention until the point when he said Memphis. That one is probably the worst ever for me.

Not a neg per se, but an incorrect movie bonus answer from ICT, coutresy of Amherst, who I'm sure did it for laughs.
(blah blah blah), the bonus is indicating either Meet the Parents or Meet The Fokkers at his point
Amherst: Uh, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner
Seth Kendall: Wow. (slight pause) Wow.
Another gem, this time from one of my teammates from Sectionals
He recently had his jaw in a cast...
