Neither of these were negs, but they were too priceless not to share anyway.

From the elementary division, in the "a little too precocious" department

Q: <blah blah> name of a soap and the material an elephant's tusks are made out of.

A: ivory
Kid: irony

Must be a sarcastic elephant, I guess.

Yes, it appears CBI brings out the aggressively idiotic buzz in everybody. My math skills having completely deserted me, I asserted that six is a two-digit number (correct answer: forty).

I also pulled this classic in the playoffs:
Wrong: Ivy League Graduates
Right: Left-Handedness

Explanation (for added hilarity): The question began by saying that "Al Gore and Bill Bradley are", at which point my answer would have been aggressively correct, only not what the answer on the page was. Unfortunately, I waited until "ten percent of Americans are" to buzz, thus certainly making many people in the room feel better that they had a one in ten chance of being an Ivy League Graduate.

Recently, a question mentioned a character being involved in a robbery with Bill Sykes.

Unfortunately, my first thought was of the horse-stealing Bill Ferny from The Fellowship of the Ring and I spent my entire five seconds trying to figure out who might have been involved in that robbery with him. I ended up gasping out, "Sam?" just as time ran out.

My coach gave me a slightly odd look and told me that the answer was, in fact, Oliver Twist.

Sorry, but "Armory Show" for "Auschwitz" was the best there, if only because it came after the part about many people dying there.

actually, the original post makes no mention of where or when it happened. It occured during a practice off a set of old toss-ups. Just because something came up at some point during a NAQT set doesn't mean anything involving that is an uncleared NAQT.

Feel free to re-edit the post then. In the future, everyone should try to mention where their question is from or at least make clear that it's something not being used anywhere.

Can I post a "bad" bad neg??? From the Antioch Invitational semifinals (junior high):

GIVEN: Chunnel
CORRECT: Channel Tunnel

No amount of protesting changed the mod's mind, either. "It's not on the paper" was all he'd say.

I thought about explaining myself further after the match (rulebook in hand), but thought better of it because every imagined conversation with said mod tended to involve the word "moron."

I have never even heard of the expression 'chunnel' until it was mentoined just two posts above.
Saying that 'no one' calls it Channel Tunnel is wrong.
I see where the moderator is coming from. I wouldn't have known that the thing is (or 'was', during its construction planning, according to the official website) referred to as the 'Chunnel'.

Really? And either way, I think saying that it can't be the Chunnel is wrong too. Even if some people don't know a term, that doesn't make it wrong. Like saying Mahesh for Shiva.

I dunno why, but this year, I have heard more and more of that "its not on the paper, and I'm not listening" to you garbage than ever before .... honestly, I hadn't heard that years, and it came up 3-4 times this year (several times in just one tournament with the same moderator). This is why when people have tournaments: it is better to have no moderator than a bad one: two competent coaches can do a far better job than one incompetent person can.

Your team got hosed in a big way.

"Imprintation" rejected for "imprinting."

What's worse is that it cost us regionals. I'm still kind of bitter about that one.
