From a conference game a few years back:

Bonus:
Identify the key from the number of flats. (moderator reads...)

Other team captain:
Part One: 6
Part 2: 3
Part 3: 7
Part 4: 9
Part 5: 1

I don't know how many of you are at all familiar with music, but I've certainly never played anything in the key of "6".

From New Trier's tournament:

Opponent buzzes in with "Spartacus"
wait for it...wait for it...buzz in with random guess before they call time-

The following neg occurred during a team question, so technically it's not a neg, but it definately deserves to be on here. The following is not a joke:

As I remember the question, this was not a bad neg at the moment you buzzed in, but the moment you said "World War I", I thought to myself:

"What darn fool would write a question like this with the answer being World War I in the middle of the championship match." I guess we were both wrong.

I had a teammate do the exact same thing, except the correct answer was baptism, with roughly the same clue. What made it so hilarious was that he answered in such a loud and confident voice.

Also, my mistake:

From Sterling HS (IL) tournament (questions distributed and in the open):

"From which vein does purified blood leave the kidney?"
<Buzz>: The carotid arterey (like swinging and missing twice!)

I'm paraphrasing this one
"Name the American general who was to replace George Washington as a part of a colonial plot. His initials were H. G."
<buzz> Ulysses S. Grant (another double swing and a miss)

As a coach, I am grateful that neither of these answers were proffered by my own team.

BTW, I heard Maggie Walker won and Mills Godwin was second.

The Colonial is the "District of Death" within the Central Region, with Maggie Walker, Mills Godwin and Douglas Freeman capable of making it to Regionals from any other district. IIRC, JR Tucker and Patrick Henry aren't half-bad either and seem to have gone .500 at the occasional tournament they surface for.

While you could know that, you can't know the answer from that clue. It could be, for example, "The Big East" or even "basket-ball." It is an unwise vulture.

I'm not sure what SCT packet that question was from, and I know this is the wrong board to put this on... but this is what Hentzel said on the quizbowl group.
Players and Coaches --

People may now discuss questions (and anything else) from the Division I SCT
sets that were played this past weekend as those questions will not be used for
future events.

If teams can determine, by comparing packets, that questions in the Division II
set were either identical to, or clearly "toned down" from, questions in the DI
set, then those may also be discussed.

Teams may NOT discuss the Community College SCT questions (that is, Invitational
Series #58) nor may they discuss questions in the DII set that were "upped in
difficulty" from IS #58. If you're not sure whether a question in the DII set
is clear for discussion, feel free to contact NAQT at naqt-at-naqt.com and we'll
let you know.

NAQT's writers and members read the popular quiz bowl forums and will probably
see any and all feedback posted there. If you want to be certain that something
gets read, or if you definitely want a response, please don't hesitate to e-mail
us directly at feedback-at-naqt.com.

We thank you for your attendance at the SCT and look forward to seeing the top
teams in Maryland in April!
