The Rasputin thing is still kind of silly at that point even if you don't know which category it belongs to, because saying "his real name is Gregory" implies that the first name he goes by is something else. If it were "his first name is Gregory" (or the Russian equivalent), then maybe.

Also, during practice we had someone give "tall tale" for "cock-and-bull story." After the clue about its name containing the name of a male chicken.

This wasn't a neg but it was on a bonus on NAQT round. I'm not sure what the question was but the answer was Bobbie Knight. My answer: Tuesdays With Mory. Yes, the book. Do not ask me what was going thorugh my mind because I don't know myself.

I'm sorry I accidentally posted twice with the same thing so I'll try to come up with another one of my stupid answers.

To answer you mrblinux, the answer was the Louvre. it went to talk about how wings were added and eventually a gallery, which it was then turned into a museum.

I was thinking ziggurats, but someone on the other team negged around there, didn't say mounds, so we got to hear the really cheap candy bar giveaway and our captain got it right.

I'm sorry...I should have prefaced that...I didn't want it coming across as a put down.......I know what its like to think under pressure and sometimes a weird answer pops out......

But as I was reading, and I heard that answer I was thinking...."eep!....that wasn't good!

Of course I think the worst answer of the day (and New Trier dodged an exceptionally minor bullet) was the "Blah blah festival dedicated to this Greek God blah blah"
BUZZ
Bacchus

(insert pounding head on the table and stomping foot that I was sure all but gave the answer away) I had to make sure not to emphasize the word "GREEK" in the rereading of the question. Yet.....they did not come up with Dionysus.

I recall getting (back in my college bowl days) a question asking about the most recent character added to "Married With Children".
The answer was "Seven"
I confidently rang in and answered "Five"....and to this day have no clue why I said that. It just happens sometimes.

No apology necessary. It's not like I answered Ziggarauts. Did you think that was me? No, I was the sophomore on the end who subbed in in the second half (If you need a further hint, you looked mildly surprised when I correctly answered the question about where the Big Horn mountain range is located).

With regards to HAHAHA, we had someone on our team answer "4/5" to the BAC question.

My bad neg (I don't remember the question exactly):

Given a board of length <measurement> and volume of one board-foot, find the width.

My answer: "2 by 4"
Correct answer: "One inch"
"Why would you want to touch anything that's been in my mouth?"

Rivers actually makes sense there, but I seriously doubt that there would be a question on a music figure that obscure in any non-trash QB tournament. However, that would have definitely popped in my head at that time, as well.

Because I'm not sure if the offender/offender's team posts on this board, I'm a little weary of writing it...therefore, Stevenson, if your captain wants to yell at me for posting this when it's technically your jurisdiction to post it, go for it.

Answer the following about Elvis:

blah...
2: Name the movie he co-starred with Ann-Margaret in.
3: Name Elvis' favorite snack.

ANSWER: mounds
I confused the ancient Mesopotamians with the ancient Native Americans. It seemed like a good enough answer at the time.

Interestingly enough, when I first heard the question, I thought, "Oh -- aren't those those big mound-y things?" Just goes to show. What, I don't know. But it shows something.

That's funny, because my thought process was almost identical..my first thought was, "Oh, they kind of look those hilly mound things...wait, they aren't mounds, are they?" Oh well.

While we're beating up on poor state champion Stevenson: Toss-up #1 of the Big Match:

This jelly like substance is made from Naphthenic acid.....
BUZZ
vaseline

Answer: napalm

Now, on one level, this is not the worst bad answer in history. However, virtually the same identical question appeared in the octangulars, which Stevenson and Wheaton North had been to one not three weeks earlier. I actually put a mark after the word "acid" thinking someone was going to ring in right there......I didn't expect a wrong answer.

In the end, it made no difference.

DaGeneral wrote:Were there any other important negs in that match?
I don't seem to recall that there were. The last round of the round robin, and the final match were, in my opinion, quite challenging.....certainly the toughest round of questions I have seen in years. I predicted the night before that we could see a AA champion that doesn't score 200 points. Both teams made it passed 200, and I was impressed. The end result was: not many questions allowed for fast rings, and I think that both teams were being quite cautious, for the most part. To give Jordan Silver some credit (after a little razzing on the vaseline answer), he had one really fast (albeit predictable) answer ("Name the novel which asks the question 'Who is John...<buzz>)...he later got a fairly impressive interrupt ("This inventor and aritst was renowned for romantic port"....<BUZZ> Morse. Colleen from Stevenson also had some great answers. Greg from Wheaton North was bringing some thunder too. The match was close, and really well played.

I also predicted that we might crown a Class A champion with only one team reaching 100 points, like in 2001. I was correct, as Latin scored over 200, but Eureka was held to under 50. Eureka's final round robin match was against winless Nashville. Eureka scored only about 130 points to win the match. Combined, I they did not score 180 points out of a possible 900.....that's how tough the questions were!

Wheaton North and Deerfield each got to 300. Auburn had the highest score of any team in the third round, and went over 300 against Deerfield for third place (topping both Stevenson and Wheaton North's scores). Steevnson also had a pretty high score in round 3, and did so with replacements in for a great deal of the round.

I remember last year, after we had lost to BB in a close match, Auburn was steaming after their 4-point loss to Stevenson and beat us down. I remember because we didn't score till tossup 10 or 11.

Another from December at a local tournament:

Name the creator of the fictional place Wines*buzz*

my teammate: Whitman
A: Sherwood Anderson

from a bonus earlier at the same tourney:

Name the poet who wrote about the imaginary Tilbury Town

me: Edward Arlington Robinson
A: EdWIN Arlington Robinson

The sad part, the moderator deemed it a correct response and the other coach didn't argue.

The sad part is, this one wasn't even a neg--the student heard THE WHOLE QUESTION. It came from one of our middle school tournaments.

<blah blah blah>. Name this Japanese movie star who won't be appearing on any talk shows because he's a 500-foot tall fire-breathing lizard.

Kid buzzes in and in all dead seriousness, answers:

Keanu Reeves.

I am not making this up.

Since it's middle school, I can understand, even though the worst question I've ever heard was about a movie rated xxx (it wasn't porn) that was a part of a bonus I heard in a middle school all-star game.
