Preferred start times for NHBB events

Post by Great Bustard »

Hi all,
NHBB tournaments are somewhat different from usual quiz bowl events in that the host school always competes (free registration for host schools is a major reason we've been able to attract as many host sites as we have, so really, everyone benefits from this). Of course, what that means is that we rely on coaches and/or outside volunteers to read at nearly all NHBB events (Texas Quiz Bowl Alliance sponsored tournaments are an exception here). This means they take a little bit longer, especially combined with the fact that we are actually running two tournaments at all our sites.
Assuming a relatively normal field size of 14-22 teams, competent tournament direction, and no other unusual circumstances, if an NHBB tournament starts at 9am, it will usually finish up around 5-5:30. Teams that don't make the playoffs can usually leave by around 3-4pm. With this in mind, would people by and large prefer...
a) a 9am start for matches (finish c. 5:15)
b) a 9:15am start (finish c. 5:30)
c) a 9:30am start (finish c. 5:45
d) a 10am start (finish c. 6:15)
e) something else? namely, our California tournament last year by general Bay Area consensus started around 11am, and finished around 7pm

Personally, your nocturnal Executive Director loves the California option, but knows this is kind of unconventional. This is obviously a non-scientific way of going about answering this question, but I figured I'd throw it out there. Good luck to the teams in Central Illinois at our first tournament of the year tomorrow!

The Central IL tournament started around 8:30-8:45, and finished up shortly after 3, including a lunch break that ended up being over an hour. Then again, we had eight teams from three schools, along with college players reading.

Centennial ran train (four of the top 5 players), but 1) their coach is a history teacher, and 2) the field wasn't that impressive.
