Maryland Spring Tournament, 5/6/2012

This is an announcement for The University of Maryland's Spring Classic High School Tournament 2012 at the University of Maryland, College Park. We are holding it on Sunday, May 6th, 2012.

The tournament will be housewritten, with 20/20 rounds and a modified ACF distribution to be posted soon [one can expect it will not vary greatly from the standard distribution, though]. Difficulty will be AGGRESSIVELY curbed-- teams should not expect the standard pre-national warm-up this tournament has been in the past, but rather a regular difficulty high school set, with special considerations made for teams who are mostly new or unacquainted with pyramidal quizbowl. I will serve as head-editor for the set.

The base cost for this tournament will be $65 per team and $60 for each subsequent team per school.

The following discounts are also available:
-$5/buzzer system
-$10/moderator

Rooms and meeting times are TBA once we reserve rooms. It is not unlikely the tournament will be held in Jiminez Hall.

For more information or registration, please e-mail me at [email protected]

St. Anselm's already claimed this date many months ago: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=11693#p228413

It was never noted on the list upward in that thread, which has not been updated in a long long time by Harry.

You may want to reconsider this date, also, as it is the second weekend for many schools on Spring Break - including us - making it impossible for us to attend.

EDIT: Wait, what? The 12th isn't a Saturday... do you mean May 12th? Or April 14th?

April 14th is the date of our playoff taping for It's Academic, so no OM.

This tournament has been moved to 5/5. Sorry, St. Anselm's! [Also Thursdays.]

I just updated the original post to include both this tournament and the 4/14 St. Anselm's event. I've probably missed some more announcements; let me know.

Thanks Isaac for your quick response to this.

And thanks Jeff for fixing that thread... i really appreciate that.

I'll ask my kids what they think about this date... i think they might want to go, since it'll undoubtedly be the last regular tournament of the year (or any tournament of the year, if we don't qualify for nationals).

Folks, this tournament is still happening. Better to register early and often, although I guess teams who are waiting to see if they're in the It's Academic semifinals will hold off on registering. But if that doesn't apply to you, register!

Question: Would people prefer we move this to Sunday, the 6th? We'd dodge It's Ac that way. No one's registered yet, so I'm not sure who'd be inconvenienced.

Well, the It's Academic finals is hardly an issue for Wilson  . However, I suspect we would be much more able to put together a team for a Sunday tournament.

I have a feeling that the day after Prom would be arguably worse for my team (#allgirlquizbowlteams)... so, i dunno, i'll check.

Right, that's why we'd consider moving it to that Sunday. Would RM be able to play the day after?

I'm interesting in coming to this tournament, I'm hoping to bring some of our younger players and/or less experienced ones. I have a lot of APs but I don't care about all of them enough that I would miss out on some good Quizbowl.

Can you post it? Thanks so much.

Also, expect 2-3 teams from RM, with registration coming fairly soon.

Unfortunately I'm having trouble mustering enough manpower to be able to go because of AP exams, and because many of our good underclassmen are busy.

I wish I could just sign onto someone else's team, I REALLY don't want to miss this one...

Someone from B-CC did this last year with TJ and my brother did it with Langley at the Prison Bowl mirror, so your wish could quite probably come true.

Please don't! I know it sucks to not have teammates, but glomming onto other teams is a mess and I wish people wouldn't do it.

It is true that I did this last year, but there were special circumstances which meant that an actual B-CC team was simply not feasible.

You could always continue the proud Isaac Hirsch tradition of attending tournaments alone. Builds character. I can lend you my buzzer rock, if you want.

An actual B-CC team is almost certainly not feasible this time

So I'd be totally up for signing onto somebody else's squad.

Credentials: 4th place individual scoring at St. Anselm's tournament.

If Isaac and UMD are fine with it, and I can go (might be forced to stay home and study for APs), I'd be willing to do this.

Look, I'm sorry, but this is not an open tournament. If you want to play the tournament alone, please do, but I'm going to say no on combined teams. Playing tournaments alone is a lot of fun, anyway.

We can probably work something out on a case-by-case basis; in your instance, you'd probably also get a distance discount.

If you guys want me to, I'll stick around after the tournament and read for some sort of tryout. But I don't really want to be the arbiter of who makes the team.

GDS won two games over "Ontological Academy" in an advantaged final to take the tournament. Prelim stats are here. Combined stats are here. Thanks to everyone who came.

Much thanks are to SteveJon Guth, Brian McPeak, Gary Weiser, Paul Marchsteiner, Chris Manners, Dan Puma, Jeff Amoros, Chris Ray, Arun Chonai, Zach Foster, Ophir Lifshitz, and Doug Graebner for help in writing this tournament. Thanks are also due to Mr. Chrzanowski, who drove all the way down from Delaware to help staff. I think despite a few setbacks [some teams not bringing buzzers], this tournament went pretty smoothly. I think we're going to hold the set for potential mirrors, especially since it seems to to be actually not super hard this year, so if people want to discuss the tournament, perhaps a private forum can be set up.

I thought the questions were definitely not as hard as last year. Their overall quality was pretty good and 2 teammates who had never buzzed in before actually buzzed in this tournament. It also felt pretty good to go 3-2 in the prelims when we went 0-5 last year. Still, it was pretty annoying to play slapbowl on 5 out of 9 games, including every single game we played in the playoffs.

Edit: in the stats you have one of our players listed as "ellicott", but his name is Duncan
