2013 NHBB Nationals Staff List

Post by Great Bustard »

NHBB Nationals 2013 is seven months away, but I'm eager to get a jump start on lining up staff, training staff, and showing the quizbowl world that we have the staff corps we need in order to have a well-run tournament. With that in mind, I am going to be maintaining not just a list of staffers, but a whole grid showing exactly who is slated to do what from now until our tournament, which will be held the weekend of (edit 9/6) April 26-28 in Washington, DC and Arlington, VA. If you are interested in staffing NHBB Nationals next year, please send me a quick email or private message. We will reimburse travel up to $250 (more on a case by case basis - email me if this applies to you), and offer accommodations and a $25 food allowance for those who read Friday-Sunday. You do NOT need to formally commit to coming at this point; expressing interest with an eye towards confirming as late as January 2013 is okay.
To recap how this tournament will work:
1) There is a field cap in place of 144 Varsity and 48 JV teams. This staff grid is meant to cover that. Of course, the tournament could have a different number of teams, in which case, we would adjust accordingly.
2) All Varsity teams will play the morning matches at the hotel (Crystal Gateway Marriott) in a seeded group of 6 teams. All JV teams will play the morning matches on site in a seeded group of 6 teams.
3) In the afternoon, all Varsity contention groups (the top 3 from each morning bracket) stay at the hotel. All JV teams play at the hotel in the afternoon too. The Varsity consolation groups (bottom 3 from each morning bracket) go on site to play a 3 game round robin against teams of comparable ability based on morning results.
4) To go on site, teams do not need to go there on their own, but just go to a pre-assigned place at the hotel where they will meet their site captain. Teams will then go to and from the hotel together to negate the chances of a team getting lost.

A note on the schematic below: if someone's name is in normal text, that means they have informally committed to coming. If someone's name is in bold text, that means they have formally committed to coming. If someone's name is in italics, that means they have been trained in reading and tournament procedures. Names will become italicized beginning in fall 2013 once a formal plan for tournament procedures coalesces. Affiliations and/or experience with NHBB are listed to provide confidence in ability to effectively staff the tournament. Positions are subject to change.

Morning Rounds - Note that all sites are subject to change pending availability, but if we have access to all, we'll go with these. Also, many, if not all, readers will have a scorekeeper as well, though our first priority, of course, is lining up readers. Any coaches listed will not read for their own teams. If coaches are bringing a JV team and are reading, they will be expected to accompany their JV team (as it makes for easier scheduling), but they will not read for them.

Out of curiosity, why are many of the "site leaders" recently graduated high schoolers with minimal experience in actually running things? Is this just a product of there not being more "experienced" staffers to fill these roles? Perhaps I'm overestimating the responsibilities of a site leader though.

As far as I know, the only responsibilities the site captains had last year were to report scores and distribute questions. David or another NHBB person can correct me if I'm wrong, but it seemed to be a job that anyone who has attended a decent number of tournaments could do, if properly directed.

Assuming you're right -- why are there "site captains" who are experienced moderators and "readers" who have never moderated a tournament before? If the site captain job is easy, why not give it to the people who haven't moderated before?

Oops, should have mentioned that site captains read as well. It's just that after each round, they'll collect scores from each of the rooms and then distribute the next round's packets, I believe.

As we're under two months to the competition, do you have an update to this staff list?

Yes, this will be posted within the next week. Now that we have a good general idea of who is coming, and who will be handling the higher level staffing positions, we can update this so it's up to date. Will Mantell, who is the staff director for this year's Nationals, will be in charge of updating this information henceforth.

The official staff grid above will be updated after April 10, once we have a final indication of how many teams will be joining us, and thus a clearer idea of how many sites, readers, and other staff we will need. That said, here is an update with regards to higher-level staff and readers in general. We will be stepping up staff outreach efforts beginning this weekend. If you are interested in staffing, please let me know as soon as you can. We'll cover travel (within reason), hotel, and a $25 food allowance.

Stats Director: Jon Pinyan

It will be done, well, after April 10, but most likely early next week. As we finalize the draw and staff lists, it makes more sense to post a version that will require little in the way of changes after the fact, but I will update this at least 3 days in advance of the tournament.
Mr. Scogan wrote:Why is a high school freshman one of your 86 "possible or confirmed" readers?
2 in fact are, and that's because they're both excellent players with experience competing at a high level of play and know what's required to be a good reader. I would not otherwise have asked them.

Fixed - had entered in the wrong last name.
