HSQBRank 2012-2013: No, I do not mean HSA Bank

Post by AKKOLADE » Fri Jul 20, 2012 12:16 pm

I guess I'll be bringing this back for the next season.

Since I haven't received any offers of help to automate this, the number of ranked teams will be low (no more than 50, possibly just 25). Updates will happen rarely.

What, you're not working tirelessly to create 200 team lists for high schoolers to thanklessly complain about and pick apart without anyone else helping anymore?

Why not?

What kind of help would you need, Fred? Just help collecting the statistics?

I think I can help with this. Just let me know.

I'd be willing to try and write a PHP parser for this... I've been working on Sports Rankings all summer (more the math/graph theory with them), and I'd be interested to see how it would apply to Quizbowl.

Fred,

I could help with writing some Macros to automate the data processing inside of Excel once the data is there if that would be helpful.

Because I can't come up with 200 basketball puns at a single sitting.

I'm talking with Dan Goff about getting something set up for this; I'll keep you updated.

And here's the preseason top 10.

So I guess this is as good a spot as any to do 2 things: First, offer any help again with gathering data for Fred (I have a simple php script working that can be used), and second let the quizbowl community know that I'm planning to work on an implementation of the Hodge-rank for quizbowl. For this to work, I'm sure I'm going to need some help with matching up teams with letters and the whole AMERICAN PRESIDENT HS thing across the country, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. For now, I'm just putting it out there that I plan to work on these rankings during the upcoming year.

What does being #XX in this poll mean? Is it a "higher rank has a >50% chance of beating lower rank if they played today," or is it a projection of ability to do well at nationals, or is it something else, or a mix, etc.

How, if at all, do older results deteriorate over time? Are newer results favored?

E-mails with my results for extraction have been sent. Right now it only works for SQBS output in one division tournaments (soon to expand to multiple divisions), if there's enough interest, I can do it for an NAQT results page, though I think someone on the inside there might be able to cook something up a bit better using MySQL. I don't expect to really start working on mine until the end of August or beginning of September, as I'm starting grad school now.

Forgive my ignorance- I assume that appb would be standing for adjusted PPB? For difficulty or something? Because Dunbar's isn't what it is on the IHSSBCA site, and if it isn't adjusted, we should be somewhere on this list as well.

Turns out my stats for Mission San Jose were messed up by NAQT's "no individual stats in playoffs = ALL THE POINTS PER BONUS", so I've corrected that in my copy. The new version, which'll be put up... when I get a chance - will show everyone listed below them up a spot and St. Joseph of NJ as the new #25.

By this point, I was hoping that I'd have a full set of software that allowed for proper output of the style of reports I did the last two years, but that's not setup yet and I don't have the time to do it by hand any more. Would it cause a huge issue if I continue putting out the overall stat reports in PDF and do bare bones, team names-only rankings for the interim?

Would it cause a huge issue if I continue putting out the overall stat reports in PDF and do bare bones, team names-only rankings for the interim?
I actually really like this, because it allows us to see all of the stats at once (pdf), and it streamlines the actual rankings.

You're doing so much for this already, I don't think it would kill anyone to have to do a little of the work themselves. This is not a big deal at all, and if it makes your job easier, I would do it.

BTW, you've got Cave Spring in there twice (at 64 and 91).

Can you tell us what the aPPB was for the bottom team? Thanks.

St. Xavier is from Kentucky, not Ohio, for what it's worth.

Okay, these issues have been fixed. Stevenson B and High Tech C are now in the rankings after removing duplicates.

The best appb for High Tech C, our #100, is 19.59.

Also: adjustments for PPB are up, as is a list of all the aPPBs this year! Ever wonder who would win between Alberta's Webber Academy C and Florida's Montverde Academy A? I guess you're just going to have to keep wondering, because the difference between their stats isn't big enough to predict anything!

Well, now that our C team is on, I can complain! Newtown and Yale FaCT are their stats, not ours; they were marked as A since they were the only team that went. Hopefully this'll improve both our ranks.
