The 2012 New Trier Varsity tournament: INTENSE (Invitational at New Trier: Exploring Noted Scholastic Excellence) will take place on December 22 on the GSAC set, written and edited by the quizbowl team at the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School for Government and International Studies (Richmond, Virginia). Teams from out of state are welcomed: we typically attract a very strong field. In the past we have had teams from South Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana.

We can be individually contacted at <[email protected]> and <[email protected]>, but please use <[email protected]> for anything tournament-related.) A formal invitation letter and entry form are available.

Tournament Format. Tournament Format. We will have two divisions, designated Über-Competitive and Standard. Teams choose which division they enter into, although we reserve the right to deny a team's request to enter the Standard division. The Über-Competitive division will be limited to 24 teams and will (assuming we hit 24 teams) consist of four brackets of six teams each, rebracketed into three brackets of eight teams each in which the match against the team from the same preliminary bracket is not replayed, and followed by ACF-style finals. The Standard division will attempt to accommodate as many teams as desire to enter, and will probably be based on bracketed round robins. Programs may enter (for example) an A team in the Über-Competitive division and a B team in the Standard division. When you email [email protected] to register, please indicate how many teams you wish to enter in each division.

Rules. We will use ACF rules except that teams of five are permitted (per Illinois norms), and correspondingly, rosters are capped at 7 per team. We may or may not use powers.

Fees. $75 per team; teams traveling long distances or who are in financial hardship should inquire for a discount. Illinois teams are expected to bring functional buzzer systems able to accommodate five players on each of two sides unless otherwise arranged. Staff discounts are arranged by having your staffer contact us offering to staff as above; we can credit the $40 to your entry fee if you want.

Unfortunately, attending as an unaffiliated team won't be possible because this is a 5-on-5 tournament. Probably best to email Reinstein and me to discuss.

This has been resolved; Belvidere North has 3 teams officially in the field.

I wouldn't worry about that. This tournament always attracts a large field.

We've had a bunch of registrations over the last few days, but have lots more room, and lots of the usual suspects have yet to register. Let's get that fixed.

We've got enough commitments to put Keith A in the standard division, but B will have to linger on the waitlist a little longer.

The Standard Division is getting to a pretty good size, but the Über-Competitive Division is a little light. Keep the registrations coming!

The day after this tournament, Maine South High School (about half an hour away from New Trier, in Park Ridge) will be hosting a "publess pub trivia" event (pub trivia-style games; food and non-alcoholic drinks). Details at viewtopic.php?p=252985#p252985.

We have 11 teams in the Über-Competitive Division and 27 in the Standard Division. Can we get at least 1 and 3 more?

Metea Valley would like to express interest for one team in Uber and one team in Standard.

The GSAC set doesn't have any at least according to the main site stats, so it seems incumbent upon hosts to keep it that way.

To be a little more forward: Doesn't it also "basically depend" on whether the set actually has powers in it or not, and whether its editors approve of someone else adding them?

Last year the editors from MW approved a power marking of the set, so I assume this is the same arrangement.

Fenton has moved into the Über-Competitive Division, which thus now has 12 teams. I'm going to close it unless there is enough interest to get to 18 teams. There are 28 teams in the Standard Division, and registrations are still being accepted.

On further thoguht, the Über-Competitive Division is closed until there are enough potential registrations for 16 teams.

Hoffman Estates has entered two teams in the Standard Division, which now contains 30 teams. I am now cutting off registrations for both divisions unless we can get to 16 teams in the Über-Competitive Division, 36 in the Standard Division.

Descriptions of the tournament format for the Über-Competitive Division and for the Standard Division are now posted.

We are doing some shuffling. Our field is growing a little bit, and we now expect to end up with 16 teams in the Über-Competitive Division and 36 teams in the Standard Division, including Buffalo Grove A, Latin, and Stevenson B in the former.

With the Über-Competitive Division going to 16 teams, a revised description of the format is now available. We could use another staffer or two.

In the Über-Competitive Division, the upper playoff bracket is Belvidere North A, Detroit Catholic Central, IMSA A, Loyola Academy A, Stevenson A, Auburn A, Metea Valley A, and IMSA B.

In the Standard Division the top playoff brackets are Wheaton North, Whitney Young, Keith Country Day, Centennial, Homewood-Flossmoor A, Oak Park-River Forest; and Carbondale, St. Viator A, Stillman Valley, Auburn B, Wauconda A, and Libertyville.

In the Über-Competitive Division, Belvidere North A beat Detroit Catholic Central in the second game of a final in which Belvidere North A had had the advantage. In the Standard Division, Carbondale beat Wheaton North in the final. Full stats in a few hours.

They're 9 points less impressive than they look, but still pretty good. I'll have that fixed in a few minutes; thanks for pointing it out.
