University of Kentucky Spring Championship - 3/2/2013

The University of Kentucky’s Quiz Bowl Team is pleased to announce we are hosting the University of Kentucky Spring Championship, a high school quiz bowl tournament on our campus in Lexington, Kentucky on March 2nd, 2013. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. in the White Hall Classroom Building and should conclude no later than 5 p.m. Registration will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Fred Morlan will be the Tournament Director and Allison Murner will be the Assistant Tournament Director.

We will be using HSAPQ’s Tournament 32 as our source of questions.

The tournament will consist of preliminary rounds of round robins between small groups of teams, which will then be rebracketed into groups of similar performance in the preliminary rounds. We will do everything we can to guarantee each team at least seven games of play.

Each match will consist of 20 tossups and 20 bonuses. Teams may be made up of up to six players. Four players may play at a time for a team. Teams with less than four players are allowed. Once a player is assigned to a team’s roster at the start of the tournament, those players cannot be moved between teams.

The top four teams will receive plaques or trophies for their performance. We will also try to recognize the highest scoring individual players.

The University of Kentucky Spring Championship will pursue affiliation as a qualifying tournament for the 2013 PACE NSC.

Since this is our first high school tournament, we are going to limit our field to 24 teams at first. This is to ensure we have enough moderators to support our field. As we recruit more staff, we will expand the field as we are able to. Until then, we will have a waitlist, from which teams will be admitted into the field. Registration is on a first come, first serve.

Entry fees are as follows:
  • The base fee is $70/team.
  • The minimum fee $30/team.
  • There is a $5 discount per working buzzer system
  • There is a $10 discount for traveling over 200 miles.
  • There is a $15 discount for each experienced moderator you can provide for the tournament; before claiming this discount, please contact us.
  • If your team has not played a pyramidal tournament in the past three years, you automatically qualify for the minimum entry fee of $30.
To register for the tournament or if you have any inquiries, please email the team at [email protected].

They better hurry up or there won't be room for them! This tournament is doing a great job of showing that there is absolutely a market for more good quizbowl in this state.

duPont Manual has registered a team for our 36th spot, and has its B team as the first team on the waitlist.

We are now tracking a waitlist for this tournament; teams that sign up for the waitlist will be offered spots in the field in the order that they sign up to it. Teams that decline a spot in the field when offered will be removed from the waitlist.

Great news, everyone! I've invented a device that allows us to receive platinum certification from the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence for this tournament! With it, the top 25% of our field, rounded up, can qualify for their National Scholastics Championship and earn a $20 discount off their entry fee!

As mentioned in the Kentucky state thread, in conjunction with this tournament, we'll be holding tryouts for the Kentucky NASAT team. We will be announcing more details in the near future, but if you're interested, email the team at [email protected] . Even if your team is not registered, you're welcome to compete. There will probably be a cost of $5/person.

Tryouts will probably start at 6 p.m. and last for no more than two hours.
