DN-QT at Del Norte HS - San Diego, CA (January 12, 2013)

Del Norte Quizbowl is pleased to announce our first tournament, DN-QT (Del Norte Quizbowl Tournament).

DATE/TIME: Saturday, January 12, 2013. Check-in will begin at 8:00 A.M. and matches will begin at 9:00 A.M.

LOCATION: Del Norte High School. Matches shall take place in the L and G buildings. A map of the campus can be found here.

REGISTRATION: Teams must register for DN-QT by emailing [email protected] with the following information: the school's name, the number of teams, the number of buzzers, the number of moderators, the calculated total fee, and a contact phone number. Schools are limited to three teams until further notice, and additional teams will be waitlisted. The registration fee will be paid on-site and checks must be made payable to DNHS Academic League.

The registration fee structure is as follows:
$70 for first team
$60 for subsequent teams
-$5 (off total school cost) for each fully functioning buzzer system
-$10 (off total school cost) for each competent staff member present the entire tournament
-$5 (off total school cost) for every fifty (50) miles traveled
-$20 (off total school cost) for schools that have not attended a quizbowl tournament in the past year

TOURNAMENT FORMAT: The tournament will use the HSAPQ set and will follow the standard mACF format (20/20, powermarked, 30-point 3-part bonuses, no computational math). A preliminary round robin in the morning shall be followed by round robin playoffs in the afternoon based on win-loss records. Ties shall be resolved on the basis of points per bonus, and ties therein shall be resolved on the basis of points per game.

The field size shall be limited to twenty-four (24) teams until further notice, and teams shall have no more than five players, no more than four of whom shall play at any point in time.

FOOD: A light breakfast shall be provided in the lobby. Though no lunch will be provided, there are many restaurants in the vicinity. Maps will be provided on site.

How did this go?

Due to some inexperienced moderators and some bad bracketing.
(We had 21 teams and we were put into 3 brackets of 7 each for prelims)
The tournament ran much later than was expected.

However, Del Norte was pretty good at trying to fix these issues.
Bracketing was much better in the afternoon, and games in general ran more quickly.
There was much less time spent waiting.

Noho A beat Irvine A for the victory in the finals.

I thank Del Norte for hosting this tournament. I think that in spite of all the issues the
tournament in general was run decently.

The HSAPQ set we used was, in my opinion, overall pretty good.

It was a great effort for a staff where no one had any experience running a quiz bowl tournament. The afternoon bracketing issue was resolved quite well, with my only complaint being the seeding of each bracket.
