The North Carolina Academic Team Association (NCATA) is pleased to announce that it plans to host a state-wide Quiz Bowl tournament for interested high schools on April 20, 2013. The tournament is scheduled to be held in Greensboro, NC. More details about the tournament will be provided soon.

*This is the full announcement for the NCATA Championship--4/20/2013*
The North Carolina Academic Team Association is pleased to announce that we will host an NCATA Championship on Saturday, April 20th, 2013. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend.
The tournament will take place on the Guilford College campus, in Greensboro, North Carolina. The opening meeting and the matches will take place in the Duke and King buildings on the campus.
AFFLIATION AND QUESTIONS: We will use HSAPQ 33. We are looking to affiliate with the PACE National Tournament.
FORMAT: We are looking to host a tournament with an initial cap of 24 teams. The teams will be divided into preliminary brackets, and then will be rebracketed into playoff brackets. More information about the exact format will be released as we get closer to the date, and may change due to the number of teams, etc. Each team will be guaranteed to play 9 games. In the event that fewer than 24 teams register, the format will change accordingly. Each match will consist of 2 un-timed halves, with each half consisting of 10 buzzer tossup questions. We will have powers and negs at the NCATA Championship, but no bouncebacks on bonuses.
REGISTRATION: To register, please e-mail me, Paul Smith, at ecgquizbowl AT gmail.com with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you want to bring, and e-mail address where we may contact you. Soon after you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation e-mail and a packet e-mailed from NCATA containing the official rules, directions, parking and dining information (all materials which will also be provided on the day of the competition). FEE STRUCTURE:
This tournament is free and open to interested NC High School teams.
METHOD OF PAYMENT:
No payment required (please see above).
TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players. Teams consisting of fewer than three players may not play without my express prior permission.
FOOD: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. Maps and suggestions will be provided at the tournament and in e-mails sent to the teams before the tournament.

Another update soon to come aobut payment for the tournament.
Edit: And that update is here. NCATA has been able to cover its expenses for the upcoming tournament and are making the tournament a free tournament for NC high school teams. Thus, there is no registration fee. We hope to get as many teams as possible to participate. Please see the information above for registration details!

Edit: The teams were divided into two divisions (with one "House" Team filling out division A, games against this team do not count in the standings). The Top 3 teams in each division will go into a "Top" Playoff Bracket, and will play the Top 3 teams from the opposite preliminary division.
Edit: Just went to 7 rounds. East Chapel Hill A got top seed in the "A Bracket," while Guilford A got top seed in the "B Bracket." Top 3 teams from A bracket will now play Top 3 teams from B bracket.

Congratulations to East Chapel Hill A for going undefeated and winning 1st place at the NCATA Championship. Early College at Guilford A finished in second with an 8-1 record. More information to come!
