The Quizbowl Resource Center

I'm going to go ahead and park this here so that people can start to claim tournament dates early! I would like to remind high school teams that are going to host tournaments that in addition to having to schedule around other high school tournaments, many tournaments hosted by college teams have to also schedule around college tournament schedules. As such I'm going to strongly urge high school teams to wherever possible host their high school tournaments to coincide with major college tournaments such as ACF Regionals, NAQT Sectionals, and both nationals. I've included some of the major college events on here, to make balancing high school and college tournament scheduling easier and slightly more effective (hopefully).

So go ahead and start posting below and we can start planning ahead for another exciting year of MD/DC/VA quizbowl!

UVA would like November 23 for Cav Classic (we're moving this tournament a month later because of an extra home football game making Charlottesville impassable on our usual date; I hope our usual attendees will move with us!) and March 22 for a tournament TBD. In conjunction with VCU, UVA would also like November 9.

VCU would like to claim October 5th, December 7th, and April 19th. Thanks!

VCU would also like to claim March 1 for VCU Spring.

TJ would like to tentatively claim Nov 16th for our fall housewrite (JAMES) that failed to happen this spring.

Blacksburg High School would like to claim October 19 for the Blacksburg High Academic Invitational II (BHAI II). We will likely run a vendor set.

New Kent would like to tentatively claim 10/26/13 for New Kent Novice and 1/11/14 for MRI-2.

Richard Montgomery would like to tentatively claim 10/12 for a novice tournament and 3/8 for a TBD mirror.

Maggie Walker would like to claim December 14th for GSAC XXI.

Just to clarify, TJ's tournament on November 16th wil be a joint effort with the team from Woodson High School in Fairfax and it will take place at Woodson, since we will be unable to host any tournaments at TJ next year due to ongoing renovations.

Where do you envision the UVA/VCU collaboration being played, Charlottesville or somewhere closer to Richmond?

This is still under discussion, but more likely it will be closer to Richmond. Cody or I will post an update here once we have a site confirmed.

OM would like to reserve February 1, 2013 for a tournament TBA later.

HSAPQ is organizing a Maryland State Quizbowl Championship beginning in 2014. We will have much more information including the final lineup of hosts as soon as everything is confirmed, which should be imminent. This is a vehicle to get every school in the state interested in playing well-formed questions in a weekend-tournament style.

Regionals will be on February 22, and the state tournament will be on Sunday, April 6. 2/22 is also the date of VHSL States, which makes this a good time for another tournament that only Maryland teams can play. 4/6 isn't anything but does avoid conflicts with you-know-what.

We would like to claim these dates as well as ask for the wider community's help in urging every team to attend their closest Regional. More on this soon!

There will also be an HSAPQ Washington, DC Quizbowl Championship on February 22. Due to the nature of DC, this will be the only one of our state tournaments that is open-entry and does not require regional qualification.

The regional sites for the Maryland Quizbowl Championship will be Quince Orchard HS, the University of Maryland, and Centennial HS, with UMD also hosting the state tournament. More info soon on the structure of this tournament.

Centennial HS in Ellicott City, MD is planning to host the Centennial HS Quiz Tournament 12/8/13 (Sunday) and National History Bowl Chesapeake Bay Regional (B-Set) 3/15/14.

Just to be clear: The Fall Tournament date claim requested by Wilmington Charter in Delaware on November 2 is intended to be a completely different tournament than the Fall Tournament claimed by 'mastaloo' above for the U of Delaware on October 19? I ask because 'mastaloo' called his tournament the 'Delaware Fall Tournament', at Delaware, the same name given by Jon Pinyan in the 2013-2014 date claim thread for NY/NJ on November 2, 2013---The ' Delaware Fall Tournament' at Wilmington. It seems they ARE different tournaments, but given the identical names, with both in Delaware, could someone directly involved please clarify?

Those are two distinct tournaments (one at the University of Delaware, the other at Wilmington Charter). I'll go edit the NY/NJ date claim accordingly.

Good eye, Ed, and thanks for the clarification, Jeff. When Varun posted about Charter's tournament, I went back to last year's claim threads and saw it labeled as "Delaware Fall".

Yeah sorry about that. I didn't realize there was another tournament with that name. We'll probably change our name in time.

Would it be possible to add sets to the date claim calendar. It is important for planning purposes to know what sets are being played where, and regular difficulty sets seem to be getting taken very quickly for the fall (especially in Virginia). From naqt.com, I see

Dorman SC would like to extend a warm invitation to all DC Metro and Mid-Atlantic teams for our 24th Cavalier Challenge on January 18, 2014. We have enjoyed visits from numerous Virginia teams in the past, and we would love for that trend to continue and to extend to other corners of your region. The drive is quite manageable, and the MLK weekend date helps to ease the travel burden as well. We would love to have you!

BHAI II at Blacksburg HS will be run on IS-127A. We would love to see a healthy field there.

We'd like to change the date of "Delaware Fall Tournament" to 10/26.

The VCU/UVA collab will be using HSAPQ T42 and VCU SFT will be using BHSAT.

We'll be using IS 128 for our Fall Tournament.

Some NHBB updates here:
1. Our Maryland tournament is confirmed for Sat. Jan 11 at Mt. St. Joseph in Baltimore (B set)
2. I am hoping to have a fall date at St. Anselm's (though I know the calendar is tight). Options here include 11/2, 11/9, or 11/23 - all of which overlap with other events scheduled farther away from DC, but we'll see what works best for St. Anselm's and schools that are looking to play in the area. Right now, I have no strong preference among these three dates.
3. The Centennial tournament will run on A set, and it will likely be on 3/15, though I am in the process of confirming that. If not, then it will be later in the school year in any case.
4. Tournaments yet to be scheduled include our 3 Virginia tournaments at New Kent, Blacksburg, and Monticello; though I'm hoping to have dates on all those within the next few weeks.
5. Delaware is likely, but not yet certain. If it happens, it would likely be held in the Southern part of the state.
6. I will post updates in the thread as dates get confirmed.

Quick Update to previous post - St. Anselm's Abbey in DC will host our DC area C set on 11/23. C set will also likely be played in Delaware and Blacksburg, VA for those interested. (edit 30 minutes later...) Also, Centennial is indeed confirmed for 3/15.

Cave Spring would like to claim the following dates for their fall and spring tournaments respectively: November 16th and February 15th. The Cave Spring Invitational (CSI) will be on the 16th and we're hoping to find a suitable mirror to do. I tried to get in touch with the TJ people about mirroring the JAMES packet on the same day as their tournament. If anybody from their group could help us out, that would be greatly appreciated. On February 15th will be our NCIS tournament and we've been talking to NAQT about hosting one of their sets for that tournament. We're still trying to figure out what would be the IS set to use for that date. Once I we decide, I'll let you guys know as soon as possible. Thanks!

Could you add the Green Eggs and Hammond Tournament (Hammond High School, Columbia,MD) for January 11?
They have confirmed this tournament (which they have continued for over 15 years).

Virginia Tech would like to claim 2/15 and 4/12 for High School tournaments to be announced.

Unfortunately, Quince Orchard was not able to host this year, though we thank them for their enthusiasm and suggestions on alternate hosts. Other dates & locations are the same as previously announced.

I've been in discussions with a replacement site for western Montgomery County and should have a definite announcement on that this week. In the meantime, we have launched the websites for the Maryland Quizbowl Championship and DC Quizbowl Championship:

NHBB's Western VA Tournament will return to Blacksburg High School on Sat. December 7. Our C Set questions will be used.

Sorry for the long delay on the status of our tournament, but it's happening now for sure. Registration details are on the link to the official announcement.

Note: we switched our set to IS 127A to accommodate more teams in the area. Registration is still open so send me an email at [email protected] if interested in playing.

NHBB Delaware returns this year with C set scheduled for Wilmington Friends on 3/1.
