SCOP mirror @ Hunter College High School, NYC (10/12/13)

Post by tnalfalfa »

Hunter College High School (located at 71 East 94th Street, New York, NY, 10128) is pleased to announce its mirror of SCOP Novice 4 on Saturday, October 12, 2013. This tournament will be co-directed by Sarah Hamerling and Marianna Zhang, and we can be reached at hchsqb at gmail dot com.

Eligibility
Eligibility is restricted to players in their first or second year of high school quiz bowl (not including single subject tournaments such as NHBB or Science Bowl) and who have not attended PACE NSC or NAQT HSNCT.

Registration
Email hchsqb at gmail dot com with "SCOP mirror registration" as the subject to register. Please include the name of your school and a phone number which we can contact on the day of the tournament, in addition to the number of teams, buzzers, and experienced moderators.

Registration will be closed on Monday, October 7th.

The field will be capped at 32 teams with no more than 6 players each. Please contact us if you wish to play but cannot join a team with your school.

Tournament Format
The tournament will follow standard ACF rules of untimed rounds consisting of 20 tossups and 20 three-part, 30 point bonuses, with neg-fives and 15-point powers, but no bounce-backs on bonuses.

The tournament will consist of bracketed round-robin prelims and rebracketed round-robin playoffs, the details of which are to be decided and announced after the field is determined. Teams will play between 9 and 10 rounds, and ties will be played off, packets permitting.

Registration and breakfast will be ongoing from 8:00 am to 8:45 am, with the first round beginning at approximately 9:00 am and the tournament ending at around 5:30 pm.

Question Set
The SCOP set is novice difficulty, and more information including its distribution (which does not include computational math) can be found here. Past SCOP sets can be found here (2012), here (2011), and here (2010). Please do not discuss the set until it is cleared by the writers.

Fee Structure
$55 for the first team from a school
$45 for each subsequent team
-$5 for each working buzzer system
-$10 for each experienced moderator

$25 minimum fee per team

Further discounts (such as for travel) can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis with the tournament directors.

We prefer payment through a check made out to HCHS Quiz Bowl on the day of the tournament.

Transportation and Food
Our school is located at 71 East 94th Street, New York, NY, 10128, between Park and Madison Avenues. It is very close to the 96th street stop on the 6 train line, and can also be reached by the m1-4 buses along Madison and the crosstown m96 bus along 96th. There is a bus drop-off area at our school on Park, and cars can park at Majestic Car Park on 94th between Park and Lexington.

We will provide free breakfast (bagels, coffee, juice, etc.) and a map of nearby options for lunch, mostly along Madison.

As a reminder, the registration deadline is Monday, October 7th. (That may be extended, but you should register soon, anyway!)

Additionally, attached is a flyer for the tournament including selected sample questions from past years' SCOP Novice tournaments.

Just to be clear, Great Neck South and "West Egg" are the same team. We just thought it would be fun to go by West Egg this year. Sorry for the confusion!

I'd like to thank Hunter for hosting a great tournament! Our freshman and sophomores thoroughly enjoyed their first experience with quiz bowl. We look forward to Prison Bowl.

Glad everyone had a great time!

Congrats to Gotham for finishing in first place! Congratulations also to Bergen A in second place and Trinity A in third, who played a hard-fought tiebreaking round for 2nd place with a final score of 295-260. Ridgewood, Scarsdale, and West Egg C came in 4th, 5th, and 6th, respectively.

Individual awards were presented to the top 5 scorers in prelims: Alon Millet of Bergen A with 100.00 ppg, followed by Lucia Geng of West Egg C, Christopher Hillenbrand of Gotham, Sam Goldman of Scarsdale, and Geoffrey Mendoza of Ridgewood.

Prelim stats are up. Playoff and combined stats, along with the full order of finish, will be up shortly.

Thanks to all of the staffers; we couldn't have ran this tournament without you! Special thanks to Jon Pinyan for suggesting the prelim exhibition games and helping with the tournament structure. Thanks to all of the teams and coaches for coming to play and staying patient. We hope everyone enjoyed the tournament!

A reminder that the set is NOT clear until February 2014. Please do not discuss the questions online or in person. For comments on the set, contact Kristin Anne Strey at Strey.K.A [at] gmail [dot] com.

Hope to see everyone back at Hunter for Prison Bowl on March 22!

Playoff stats and combined stats (prelim + playoffs, not including crossover for Eska and Desna) have been posted.

Full finishing order for Noatak and Tarrlok (top and middle brackets):
1. Gotham
2. Bergen A
3. Trinity A
4. Ridgewood
5. Scarsdale
6. West Egg C
7. Trinity C
8. Valley Stream South A
9. West Egg B (tie)
9. Cardinal Spellman A (tie)
11. West Egg A (tie)
11. Ardsley (tie)

For Eska and Desna: Because multiple teams left during or before the crossover round, scores could not be used to determine complete standings. Note that House A replaced Sachem East beginning with the second round of playoffs, and House B replaced Bronx Science B.

Again, thanks so much to everyone for coming!
