FAcT IX at Yale (New Haven, CT, 10/12/13)

Post by pleasewalkforward »

Yale Student Academic Competitions will be hosting our ninth annual Fall Academic Tournament (FAcT), on Yale's campus on Saturday, October 12, 2013. The tournament will use untimed rounds of 20 tossups and bonuses from NAQT's Introductory Invitational Series set (IS-131A).

In-person registration will begin at 8 A.M. with the aim of starting the opening meeting at 8:45 A.M. and the first round by 9 A.M. The tournament will take place in the Hall of Graduate Studies (HGS) on Yale's main campus (map), located at 320 York Street, New Haven, Connecticut. Teams are strongly encouraged to arrive at 7:45 A.M. to leave time to find parking--multiple other events, including the inauguration of Yale's new president, will also be occurring around the same time.

Many Yale parking lots within two to three blocks of HGS are open to the public on weekends for free, including Lots 51, 77, 78, and 78W, shown here. Street parking is also available, as is garage parking in the Grove Street and Audubon Court garages, shown here. For further information about transportation to and from the tournament, feel free to e-mail me.

Teams that finish in the top 15% of the field will automatically qualify for NAQT's 2014 HSNCT (High School National Championship Tournament), held on the weekend of May 30th in Chicago Illinois. FAcT will also be affiliated with, and will be "Gold-Certified" by, the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE), which will allow as the top 20% of the field to qualify for this year's PACE National Scholastics Championship in Reston, Virginia, on Memorial Day weekend 2014.

Registration

If you would like to register your high school for FAcT or have other questions about it, please email me, Jacob Wasserman, at <[email protected]>, with "FAcT" in the subject line and the following information:

-- The number of teams you will be bringing
-- Any discounts you plan to qualify for
-- Whether you require an invoice by e-mail prior to the tournament
-- Your preferred e-mail address
-- A phone number by which your team can be called day-of

We are capping the FAcT field at 20 teams, and will be maintaining a waiting list for teams beyond that. Spots will likely go quickly, so please register as soon as is possible. Posts in this thread are fine for "expressing interest" but will not count as registrations.

Payment

Base fee: $80
Base fee for additional teams (B team, C team, etc.): $75
Buzzer discount: -$5 per operative buzzer system with at least eight working buzzers
Moderator discount: -$10 per competent moderator
Minimum fee per school: $60

If you plan to pay by check, the check must be made out to “Y. Student Academic Competitions.” Do NOT make checks payable to “Yale Student Academic Competitions.” Checks should be given to us on the day of the tournament, or, if that's not possible, can be sent to:

After I received an absolutely astounding number of registrations within two days, the field for FAcT is now full, at 20 teams. Unfortunately, try as we might, our room reservations are strictly limited due to other events on campus, so a field expansion will not be possible. The waiting list is already filling--if you would like to be added, just send me an e-mail with your number of teams, buzzers, and staffers; your day-of e-mail address and phone number; and whether you need an invoice e-mailed beforehand.

The silver lining from this is that New England quizbowl is looking more and more active. I certainly hope teams unable to attend FAcT will be able to compete at other events down the road.

Field update:
Two teams have already entered the field from the waiting list, but it remains unlikely that there will be too much more movement in the field. As a courtesy to the other teams waiting, please e-mail me as soon as possible if your team will be unable to make it. A full set of logistical information for FAcT will be sent out shortly.
