***PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE*** The Demon Deacon Challenge will now be held on November 23, a week after it's original scheduled date of November 16. Sincere apologies for this inconvenience.

Wake Forest University Quiz Bowl Team is pleased to announce the inaugural hosting of the Demon Deacon Challenge on Saturday, November 23, 2013. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend. As with past Wake Forest high school Quiz Bowl tournaments, this tournament will take place in Carswell Hall on the Wake Forest University campus in Winston-Salem, NC.

AFFLIATION AND QUESTIONS: We will use NAQT Invitational Questions, particularly NAQT set #IS-130. The tournament will serve as an NAQT event, and as such, the top 15% of the field will qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship. We are also looking to affiliate with the PACE National Tournament, which would result in the top 15% of teams qualifying for PACE National Scholastics Championship.

FORMAT: The teams will be divided into preliminary brackets, and then will be rebracketed into playoff brackets. More information about the exact format will be released as we get closer to the date, and may change due to the number of teams, etc. Each team will likely play 7-9 guaranteed games. Each match will consist of 2 un-timed halves, with each half consisting of 10 buzzer tossup questions. We will have powers and negs, but no bouncebacks on bonuses.

REGISTRATION: To register, it is preferred that you please fill out the following form http://tinyurl.com/WFUquizbowl.
You may also e-mail me, Zachary Thomas, at thomzi12 AT wfu.edu with the number of teams, staffers, and buzzers you want to bring, and an e-mail address and cell phone number where we may contact you. Following the completion of your registration, you will receive a confirmation e-mail and a packet e-mailed from me containing the official rules, directions, parking and dining information (all materials which will also be provided on the day of the competition). Registration fees may be mailed in advance or paid at the tournament. Checks should be made out to “Wake Forest University."

FEE STRUCTURE:
Base fee: $70 for first team, and $30 for each additional team
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work).
Staff discount: $10 off school's total fee. This could be a coach, parent, student who is not playing, etc. Team-provided staffers will keep score for tournament matches. Volunteer staffers must stay through all the games (except finals) in order to receive credit for their school. Teams can only register one staffer discount.
Early registration discount: $10 off school’s total fee. If Wake Forest Quiz Bowl receives your registration on or before 11/9/13, we will take off $10 from your school’s fee.
Travel discount: $15 off school’s total fee for traveling over 150 miles (as determined by Google Maps).
Minimum fee: The minimum fee is $0 (you cannot have a negative fee)

METHOD OF PAYMENT: All teams must pay on or before the day of the tournament. Teams who do not pay on or before the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 penalty and will have two weeks to pay their total amount before we start contacting your school administration about it. We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or Quiz Bowl club funds. Checks should be made out to “Wake Forest University."

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players. Teams consisting of fewer than three players may not play without my express prior permission.

FOOD: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament; however, Wake Forest has a number of dining options available nearby the tournament site. Maps and suggestions will be provided at the tournament and in e-mails sent to the teams before the tournament.

We hope to see your team at the Demon Deacon Challenge on November 23rd at Wake Forest. Go Deacs!

Do you have information yet about what time we should be there, where we're meeting, and the projected time frame?

A detailed information packet with relevant tournament information is being edited to be sent out today to teams, but just to answer Mrs. Newmark's questions on the previous post:
- Teams should arrive at Wake Forest between 8:00AM and 8:30AM, with the hopes of getting the tournament underway at 9AM. Location will be the same as past years, in Carswell Hall.
- The tournament will last until roughly 5 PM; we will be playing nine rounds.

Big thanks to all teams who came out to the inaugural Demon Deacon Challenge! Congratulations to Guilford A for going undefeated and taking first place.

Stats can be found here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/1695

Please post/message me if there are stats discrepancies.

Final tournament standings, distinct from the "Combined" stats rankings:

(To explain: after 7 rounds of prelims within two brackets of 8 teams each, brackets were broken into four tiers of two teams each to face off against teams of the same tier for final placement (tier placement by W/L%, tie-breaker of PPB). For example, Guilford A, first in its bracket, faced off against the top two teams of the other bracket for final ranking. Within tier, final placement determined by team's combined W/L%.)

(1) Guilford A
(2) Cave Spring A
(3) Guilford B
(4) East Chapel Hill A

(5) NCSSM
(6) Raleigh Charter A
(7) Enloe
(8) Guilford C

(9) Carrboro
(10) Raleigh Charter B
(11) Union Pines
(12) Raleigh Charter C

(13) East Chapel Hill B
(14) Cave Spring B
(15) Guilford D
(16) Rutherford

Thanks!
