Post by Scaled Flowerpiercer »

The first (annual?) Williams Highschool Academic Tournament (WHAT) will be at Williams College in Williamstown, MA on January 11, 2014. The tournament will be open to any and all teams that wish to attend, and all teams will be playing on the LIST question set written by students from Ladue (more details on the set here). We will try to begin the tournament by 9:30 on Saturday, January 11th, so try to arrive by 9:00am. All games will be played in the Bronfman science center, which can be located on this map The following will be the price schedule for the tournament:

Base cost: $65/team
Buzzer Discount: -$10/set
Skilled Moderator Discount: -$10/person (We should have enough moderators; this discount is conditional on actually using a moderator. The buzzer discount is not conditional on whether we use your buzzers, however)
Distance Discount: -$10/100mi traveled
New team discount: -$10 if your school has not played in a pyramidal quizbowl tournament since August, 2013.
Minimum Cost: $20/team

To register, either post here in the forums or email me at [email protected] (or both)

Current Field (teams, buzzers): (7,4)
Cap: 14 teams

AMSA (1,1)
Phillips Exeter Academy (1,1)
Sharon (2,0)
Acton-Boxborough (1,1)

This tournament is now Gold certified by PACE, so the top 20% of the field will qualify for the PACE NSC on the weekend of May 24-25th at the Hyatt Regency Reston outside of Washington, D.C.

An e-mail just went out to teams with additional information on the tournament. If you did not receive the email, tell me (either here, by private message, or by emailing [email protected]) so that you can get the information.

Stats are here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... all_games/

Congratualations to AMSA, who won, clearing the field, and congratulations to Sharon A, who finished in second place. Both teams qualified for PACE NSC.

Thank you everyone for coming, I hope you all enjoyed the tournament. I do apologize for the late lunch; next time we will check to make sure that the pizzeria we order from is actually open. If anyone has any comments/criticisms on how the tournament was run, please either post here or email me so we can learn for the future, and follow Ben's advice in the post above regarding discussion of the set.

Note about Stats: we played a 7-team round robin, followed by what we intended to be a 4-team playoff division and 3-team consolation division (well, we had intended 8 -> 4/4, until Philips Exeter dropped). We ended up having just the playoff division, as two teams (Williston Northampton and Acton-Boxborough) left early, and Lexington forfeited their last round. I think this should clear up any confusion resulting from the fact that different teams played different amounts of games.
