WIT II at Marist (GA): a HFT mirror on Jan. 11th

Post by wareagle »

Marist School is pleased to host its second Winter Invitational Tournament (WIT) on Saturday, January 11th.

FIELD
The tournament will be a true invitational, showcasing the very best teams of Georgia quiz bowl. The field will therefore be limited to no more than 14 teams, with a minimum goal of 10 teams. Teams will be invited, in tiers, and the field will only be expanded periodically, assuring that we have as many of the top teams as possible in attendance, while maintaining our cap on the field.

QUESTIONS
The tournament will be a mirror of the Harvard Fall Tournament question set. Information about the set can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=14494

FEES
The cost will be $75, which includes four players’ lunches and one coach’s lunch. Proceeds will go to (a yet-to-be-determined charity). We ask that you consider including an additional donation in your registration fee to support the charity.

FORMAT
We will run a single round robin, which will have each team play all other teams in the field, guaranteeing a good number of games against some of the best competition in the state. We will not use bounce back bonuses. This year we will use both powers and negs.

We look forward to a great day of competition!

Just a reminder to the four teams invited last week that you have until this Friday to register for the tournament via the google doc link in the invitation email.

After this Friday, another round of invitations will be extended and your spot will no longer be guaranteed.

Invitation and field lists have been updated.

Another round of invitations will go out following CATT. That will likely be the last round of invitations.

Other tournament updates:
-the set is power-marked, so we will be using both powers and negs this year.
-we will be tracking individual statistics.

Here is the information I just emailed to coaches.

Dear Academic Team Coaches,

Before leaving for break, I wanted to send you some information about the Winter Invitational Tournament (WIT) at Marist School (3790 Ashford-Dunwoody Rd, Atlanta, GA 30319) on January 11th.

We are glad you all can make it and especially appreciate those who were able to make an additional contribution to the charity we will support with the tournament, Dekalb PATH Academy. The PATH Academy “strives to create a nurturing learning environment for immigrant and refugee families to give children the best opportunity for success despite economic and linguistic barriers.” If you would like to make (or increase) a donation, it is not too late—just let me know. Thanks for your generosity, especially during this season of giving.

Parking and Check-in: I have attached a campus map that indicates where teams can park and where team check in will be. Team check-in will be from 8:00-8:15 in the school cafeteria. The reader/scorekeeper meeting will begin at 8:15. We will begin round one no later than 8:30 and will not be able to wait for any late arrivals.

Format: We will be running a full round robin. This means that each team will be playing 11 rounds—one round against each other team present. As there is no elimination, teams need to stay for the duration of the tournament. We hope to complete the 11th round around 4 o’clock. There will be 20 toss-ups and 20 3-part bonuses in each round. We will not be using bounce backs on bonuses. We will be using both powers and negs.

Rules, Timing, and Order of Finish: We will play with FOUR players at a time. Substitutions will be allowed only in-between matches. Teams will have FIVE seconds to buzz in at the completion of a toss-up. A player who buzzes in will be recognized, but s/he does not need to wait for recognition before answering. Players will have THREE seconds to begin an answer after being recognized. Teams will have FIVE seconds per bonus part. Captains may designate on bonuses. The top two teams will receive trophies. Final placement will be determined using the following information in this order,
1. Win-Loss record
2. Heads-up Game
3. Points Per Game
4. Points Per Bonus

Field:
1 Alpharetta
2 Baconton Charter
3 Bainbridge
4 Brookwood
5 Cedar Shoals
6 Centennial
7 Chattahoochee
8 Collins Hill
9 Dunwoody
10 Marist
11 Norcross
12 Westminster

Rosters: Thank you for taking the time to complete the roster form. This will help move things along the morning of the tournament. If you need to make changes to your roster, please do email me before the tournament so that we can update the score keeping software.

Buzzers: Please remember to bring a working buzzer system to the tournament and turn it in at team check-in.

Lunch: Remember, no cash will be accepted the day of the tournament. Remember to bring your check! If you need an invoice for billing purposes, let me know. You will receive in your team packet a number of tickets that corresponds to the number of lunches you pre-ordered. You will turn these in at lunch to receive your Zaxby’s, chips, and drink.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Thanks and have a very blessed holiday season,
Kevin
