Does anyone reading this have any idea if Battle of the Burgh @ uPitt is getting announced; if so, when?

Yes, we are still having Battle of the Burgh. I apologize for being so late with picking a date, but this is because we cannot reserve rooms for next semester until the start of next semester. Our spring semester begins in January and ends in April. That means we will not be able to pick a date until early January when the room reservation system opens.

We could always pick a date now, but if someone else were to reserve those rooms before we did, it would be a logistical nightmare. I will aim for March 15 to avoid conflicting with SATs, ACTs, and other tournaments, but I have not discussed this date with anyone yet and it is not even close to being finalized.

Just in case this affects your decision, March 15 falls over our spring break, so you wouldn't be getting any help from CMU in terms of staff.

Thanks for telling me. We'll have to pick an alternate date then. Either way we'll know in early January.

Apparently, this also falls over Pitt's spring break as well, so, yeah, probably not a good idea.

I concur. With all of the SAT and ACT dates, would we be allowed to do a Sunday tournament? And if we did, would that inconvenience a lot of teams? Doing a tournament at the end of February would give schools barely two months to register and we end the semester in April.

Speaking as someone who is from a team that may come out in the Spring, I think having a tournament on a day such as the SAT works better for a lot more people than a tournament on Sunday. SAT testing may really only affect a few kids from some teams. A Sunday tournament makes it rather difficult for teams from the non-Pittsburgh area (and possibly even local teams themselves) to attend.

We have done Sundays, but we also prefer Saturday tournaments. We don't get home until 10 or 11 at night, so I'm not sure that is a good idea with school the next day.

If the date is announced far enough in advance, students can schedule testing around the tournament date.

Thank you for your input. We're having our first meeting of the semester this coming Thursday, so hopefully we'll have a date then. I will aim for a Saturday, since that seems to be vastly preferred.

Hi everyone,

The University of Kentucky is hosting a Pre-Nationals weekend on May 10 and 11th on our campus in Lexington, Kentucky. On Saturday, we'll be using NAQT SCT DII with HSNCT rules, and on Sunday we'll be using the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament with NSC rules. We may also have some Saturday evening event, though I can't promise that I won't cancel this for my own personal event, "Fred goes to sleep early in between the two quiz bowl tournaments he's running over a weekend."

For more details on fees and such, check our announcement at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =1&t=15460.

Pittsburgh isn't too terribly far from Lexington (a bit under 6 hours), so if you're interested in a weekend of quiz bowl and have room in your budget after NSC and HSNCT, we'd love to have you!

NHBB is pleased to announce we'll be running A Set at the inaugural Susquehanna Valley History Bee and Bowl on Saturday, March 8 at Wyoming Area Secondary Center in Exeter, PA. If Pennsylvania teams find this a better date than the A Set tournaments in Princeton, NJ on 2/22 or Ellicott City, MD on 3/15, hopefully you can join us here. We're expecting maybe 8-12 teams for this, so it will be a modestly sized event, but we're happy that Wyoming Area approached us with this date in mind, asking to host.

The History Bowl (on B set) at Manheim Township has been postponed to March 15. Registration is still open for any teams that couldn't attend the February 15th tournament.

If you want to add some Western PA dates up there from the NAQT schedule...

Winchester Thurston's tournament on IS-131A has apparently changed dates again to April 5. Rockwood (about 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh) is running IS-135A the following Saturday.

Has there been any talk of a Pennsylvania NASAT team?

Missy Doll and I discussed this at some point a few months ago. Basically, the conclusion was that there weren't feasible ways to hold a tryout accessible to the whole state or to raise the considerable amount of funds necessary to send a team.

That said, I'd still love to see Pennsylvania send a team, so feel free to share any thoughts you might have on the matter.

It would be hard to get everyone together, especially given that the only major remaining tournament in PA is Eastern states, which most of the Western teams won't play. We could try to organize a tryout on Skype or Google Plus if there were enough interest.

I'm not trying to handwave things here, but with a four person team, you're looking at about $125 in entry fee for a person. I understand that some of you would have to go from the Philadelphia area, but if you drove you'd probably be looking at a total of $200 in gas (so $50 per person). If you got a room at the Hyatt Place that HSAPQ plugs on their page, you'd be looking at $170 a night for one room that really could probably sleep all of you in it, since those rooms are huge. Assume two nights, that's $340, or another $85 per person. All told, this would be $260 per person plus food.

And as a former NASAT TD, tryouts aren't necessary, as long as you can submit a reasonable bid that showed you tried to include everyone you could to get the best team possible.

The Hyatt Place apparently changed their format and prices so they are no longer as ideal, but last weekend Matt Weiner was talking about a new recommendation he's working on that will serve the same purpose.

I will echo Fred's point that tryouts are not strictly necessary; for the past two years VA has had 6 or fewer (the number allowable on a NASAT roster) kids interested and thus they have just been declared the team. I would definitely check interest (to the extent that such communication is possible in your state) before worrying about the geographic feasibility of tryouts.

Speaking unofficially--Fred and Sarah are exactly right upthread. A bid from a team consisting of interested high schoolers from Pennsylvania will almost certainly be accepted, regardless of whether official tryouts were held or not. To my understanding, the bid process is mostly to avoid, say, a HS team in Illinois from submitting IL's NASAT roster with all of their own players.

Speaking officially--HSAPQ is very interested in seeing a team from Pennsylvania attend NASAT. This projects to be the largest NASAT ever, with 15 states having already signed up and two more in the process of submitting a bid. As a state with a number of strong teams and geographic proximity to the tournament site, it makes a lot of sense for there to be a PA team as well. My role with HSAPQ is to assist teams with the logistics and organizational side of attending NASAT, so if anyone from PA is interested in forming a team, please let me know through email or PM and I will do as much I can to help.
