Saint Joseph High School is pleased to announce the rescheduling of its 4th Annual GARDEN STATE ACADEMIC COMPETITION, a Mirror of GSAC XXI.

The New Date: April 12, 2014

The Set: The Question Set is authored by our distinguished friends from the Maggie Walker Governor's School in Richmond, Virginia.

Set Distribution: 4/4 Lit; 4/4 Science; 4/4 History; 3/3 RMP; 3/3 Fine Arts; 1/1 Social Science; .5/.5 Geography; .5/.5 Trash

Fee Structure: $70.00 for the first team; $60.00 for each additional team.

Discounts: $10.00 for each working buzzer system; $15.00 for each moderator; $20.00 for travel of more than 100 miles. Minimum payment per team: $40.00

Registration: We are targeting a registration of 24-36 teams, with a limit of 4 teams per school, ideally hoping for four to six brackets of 6. HOWEVER, since registrations have filled up so rapidly in the region this year, we will only accept the first two teams you register for now in order to give more schools the time to register, and any teams in excess of two from your school will be placed on a waiting list. If by February 1st the field is not yet full, we will then place teams from the waiting list into the field on a first come, first served basis, so if you want more than two teams in the field, let us know immediately and they will be placed at the top of the waiting list. Now, back to the tournament itself: We will have round-robin preliminaries, then re-bracket and have another round-robin for all teams in the afternoon. We hope to have a minimum of 10 games for all teams, and 11 for those in the Championship brackets. You can reveal your interest by posting here, but in order to officially register please email me at [email protected] Just place " April GSAC" in the subject line and then provide your registration info as well as an emergency phone number where coaches can be quickly reached. On the day of the tournament we will run registration from 7:45 AM-8:45 AM and start Round 1 by 9AM. During registration we will have a light breakfast of bagels & juice while we finalize preliminary brackets. Also, we have ample parking in the back of our school if parking is a concern, and you can park behind our Main Building and enter the cafeteria in the back, which you cannot miss. Also, if you need an invoice for your school's financial officer, email me and I will send one via return email.

Payment: This is expected in cash or by check the morning of registration, but if you wish to mail it sooner make your check payable to Saint Joseph High School and mail it to : Ed Powers, c/o Saint Joseph High School, 145 Plainfield Avenue, Metuchen, NJ. Out of curiosity, is there a reason why "Gotham"'s second team is on the waitlist? It seems like there's room in the field.

Because Gotham is not yet sure if it is bringing a 2nd team, so as a courtesy I placed it on a wait list in case they decided to come. If they decide before February 1st, they will be immediately placed in the field. If after the 1st, then they will be placed in the field in the order that they were placed on the waiting list. Finally, if they decide not to bring a 2nd team before February 1st, it will be dropped from the list. I trust this answers your question.

I would like to offer my services as a moderator for the tournament, as I will be accompanying one of the teams in the field to the tournament for logistic reasons better explained in a PM or in a private e-mail to [email protected]. Get in touch and I'll let you know what's going on.

With the passage of the February 1st registration deadline, six teams have been removed from the waiting list and added to the field, so we have now reached our hard cap of 36 teams. Of the 6 new teams added to the field, in the order they had originally registered, 2 are from Hunter, 1 from Kellenberg, 2 from Mountain Lakes, and 1 of the 2 teams from Wilmington Charter on the waiting list.

I will still maintain a waiting list in case things change between now and April 12th, so if you wish to participate, please register via the email address above and perhaps you can be added to the field when all is said and done.

With 6 teams on the waiting list I would love to expand the field to 42 teams, but I cannot due to room limitations. But I will still maintain a waiting list in case some teams withdraw between now and April 12th.

With the withdrawal of 1 team, a 4th Wilmington Charter team has been added to the field from our waiting list.

With the withdrawal of 2 more teams, the teams from Livingston and Millburn that were on the waiting list have been moved into the field, giving both Livingston and Millburn 3 registered teams.

Could I add a moderator for Ridgewood?

We would love a moderator from Ridgewood. Heck, even two if possible! But one is terrific, so please do add one! I will add it immediately to your registration above.

West Egg would like to add a moderator in addition to the two teams it has on the waitlist.

I am posting to confirm Pingry's registration in the rescheduled GSAC for 4/12 on behalf of our team and coach. Thank you for including us in your prestigious tournament!

With two teams dropping, the 2nd Pingry team is now in the field, as is the 1st West Egg team along with its Moderator. If any other schools intend to drop teams, please advise ASAP, since there are still two teams on the waiting list that would love to come.

Hopefully no more teams drop and we retain a full complement of 36 teams.

Since the field has shrunk to 30 teams in the last week or so I have decided to freeze registrations at this number rather than accept new teams and thus have brackets with mandatory byes. If all 30 teams show up, this will make for natural brackets of 6 with no byes. Hence my freeze.

Edit: I changed the number of teams in the now frozen field from 32 to 30, since 2 more teams dropped since this morning. But 30 is a great number, allowing for 5 natural brackets of 6.

Ridgewood would like to bring a second moderator and drop a buzzer system.

A 2nd moderator from Ridgewood would be great, and we should have more than enough buzzers, so your switch is fine.

Congratulations to High Tech A for its impressive Championship in today's mirror of the GSAC XXI Set. All stats except the combined stats have been uploaded to the Quizbowl data base. We hope to have combined stats completed before the week is out.

There is a glitch in the stats we do not fully understand. I am recruiting my friend and colleague, Coach Zinsmeister from Seton Hall Prep to help out. With my cheering and his expertise, maybe they can be up by Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Are you trying to do a combined file with a Mac? If so, the problem is you're trying to do it with a Mac. That seems to not be functional on the non-Windows version for whatever reason.

On a PC, not a Mac.

If you email me the stat files, I'll look at it when I get a chance this week.
