NAQT IS-A at Tulane 9/27/2014

Post by NickCahlfs »

Tulane University is proud to announce that we will be holding our annual fall high school quiz bowl tournament on Saturday, September 27th.

Registration/check-in for the tournament will take place from 8:00-8:30 a.m., with a welcome meeting for coaches & players at 8:30. Preliminary games will take place following the welcome meeting (no later than 9am)to noon. Lunch will not be provided, but teams are encouraged to go to the food court in the Lavin Bernick Center on campus from noon until 1 p.m. We will re-bracket after lunch, with top and bottom brackets determined by Win-Loss record first, and then Points Per Game. Teams can expect the final rounds and trophy ceremony to be finished by 5pm at the latest, but if the tournament is on-schedule then it should be complete by 4pm. Trophies will be provided to the first and second-place teams, as well as the top 3 individual players.
Questions for this tournament will be an NAQT IS-A set. The questions will be similar in length, difficulty, and content to previous sets used at Tulane high school tournaments in the past. Sample questions that fit the NAQT format can be found here: http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/
The entry fee is $50 per team. Schools may enter up to three teams. There is a $10 discount for each team that brings a buzzer system. A school may bring multiple buzzer systems, but only one buzzer system discount will be counted per team. Payment may be made in cash or check on the day of the tournament. Please make checks out to "Tulane University Quiz Bowl." We will provide receipts to coaches.
We are limiting the field to 18 teams--depending upon the number of staffers we are able to get, we may increase this number, as well as the number of teams from each school. There will be no separate JV bracket. The tournament is open to any public, private, or parochial schools who wish to attend.
The format of the matches will be 20 toss-ups and bonuses. On toss-ups, players will buzz in. Teammates are not allowed to consult on toss-ups. If a player gives the correct answer, he or she will normally earn 10 points. If the player buzzes in early enough, he or she will receive 15 points. If a player interrupts the question with a wrong answer, he or she will lose 5 points and the toss-up will be finished for the other team. There is no penalty for an incorrect answer after the end of the question, or if the second team interrupts with an incorrect answer after the other team already lost five points.
A team that correctly answers a toss-up will then be given a three-part bonus question. The moderator will read the first part of the question; the team will then have five seconds to consult and answer the question. After the team responds, the moderator will say whether the answer was correct, and will give the correct answer. The moderator will then read the next part, and so on. Each bonus part is worth 10 points. Only the team that answers the toss-up correctly will have a chance to answer the bonus parts.
The rules will be similar to the ones used by NAQT. Those rules are available at: http://naqt.com/rules.html

The tournament itself will take place in the bottom floor of Newcomb Hall on Tulane’s campus. Teams can park anywhere on campus that isn’t labeled a reserved space, though the closest streets on campus to park would be Newcomb Place, Drill Road, and McAlister Place, in that order. Parking may also be available on Broadway. See attached map for more information.

To register, please e-mail [email protected] with the number of teams you would like to enter, the number of buzzer systems you will be bringing, and a contact phone number of a coach/chaperone for your school on the day. The registration deadline is Wednesday September 24th, but please register as soon as possible to reserve your spot.
