Southeast HFT mirror @ Marist School (GA) 11/15

Post by wareagle » Thu Sep 11, 2014 11:25 am

This year we will host the first Marist School Fall Invitational Tournament (MSFIT) on Saturday, November 15th. The tournament will mirror the Harvard Fall Tournament (HFT), being played on the same date at the main site. The tournament format will feature five preliminary matches followed by a re-bracketed playoff. Teams will be guaranteed 10 rounds. Bouncebacks will not be used. Teams will be limited to four members.

Teams from around the Southeast are welcomed and encouraged to attend. We hope to attract some of the best teams from around the region.

The cost of the tournament will be a flat fee of $100, which will include lunches for four players and one coach. Additional lunches may be purchased separately in advance. If you can bring an experienced reader, there is a -$10 discount and working buzzer systems are -$5 discounts (limited to the first 12 schools to claim the discount; not to exceed one per school). If you travel more than 100 miles (according to Google maps), you will receive an additional -$10 discount.

The initial field will be limited to 18 teams until additional readers can be secured. Until the field expands, each school may only register two teams. Additional teams from the same school will be placed on a wait list.

You may post here to register or email me (mullallyk@marist.com).

For more information about the HFT, read here,

Registrations are still trickling in. If you have not expressed interest at this point, please do so by this time next week so we can accurately predict the size of the field and secure the appropriate number of workers.

The field is now full. A wait list will be started.

Would someone from Farragut please confirm your status--the last I heard was it was tentative.

Because of some recent drops, there is one available spot for sure and possibly a second.

If you are interested email me, mullallyk_at_marist_dot_com. I am willing to lower the entrance fee to $80, which includes five lunches!

This offer is good until noon on Thursday, at which time I will plug in two more Marist teams and print the schedule!

It is going to be a great day of competition--come join us!

It's the quizbowl deal of the day!

You can compete in this tournament AND GET FOUR PLAYERS' LUNCHES AND A COACH'S for only $35. That's right, we are practically giving it away (well, actually, all told, we will lose about $10).

There is only one spot left at this price, so act now!

First, email to mullallyk@marist.com gets the spot!

Were the teams at this tournament divided into brackets/pools for the preliminary or playoff phases, or both? If so, it'd be good for future stats-keeping purposes to use the "Enable Divisions" feature in SQBS to assign each team the name of the division they competed in, allowing results for different brackets to be split out (and making it easier to figure out details for nationals-qualification purposes).

Thanks, Matt, for the suggestion. This was our first time doing the SQBS in house, so we were still figuring out the system. We realized about 3/4 of the way through the day that there was a better way to do it. And now we know what it is! If it's easy to go back and add that in, we wouldn't be opposed to it.

Correct. It was our first time doing SQBS in house, and we wanted to make sure that the tournament ran smoothly and efficiently.

We will be keeping individual stats at our tournament in February, WIT, which will mirror BHSAT.

I'm not exactly sure how keeping individual stats would prevent you from running the tournament smoothly and efficiently.

Hello, Hidehiro. I'd like to take a minute to answer your question. If you are not comfortable with SQBS and have inexperienced scorekeepers, it can cause significant delay to keep individual stats throughout an entire tournament. And staying on time is always priority when you are running a tournament. While individual stats are nice to look at, I and many tournament directors in Georgia are of the opinion that keeping them is far from essential. They mean very little in the grand scheme of things. I understand from previous posts that you have concerns with the way tournaments operate in Georgia, but I also feel that you do not understand the circumstances under which many of those tournaments operate. If you would like to have a deeper discussion of why certain conventions exist in Georgia that may not be "standard" wherever you are, please feel free to PM or Facebook message me.

Can't you just input the individual scores into SQBS after the tournament is over? That wouldn't delay things at all and individual players would still get to see how they improve from tournament to tournament.

I mean, the scorekeepers would still need to take down individual stats during the match, and that can be a slowdown especially in matches with powers. Not to mention the need to keep accurate score of the match and of players can lead to more score checks, which delays matches further. Also the difficulty of the HFT set is higher than normal housewrite/competition questions so there wouldn't be much of a comparison between tournaments for individual players, because most people's PPG would go down with this type of set difficulty, when most other sets are standardized to a much easier difficulty.

I doubt that there's such a dearth of competent scorekeepers in Georgia that writing an extra number in the correct column each tossup would slow things down at all, considering the main site took those stats fine and that plenty of people are capable of simultaneously reading and scorekeeping in a timely fashion. And...shouldn't there be every effort to keep the correct stats for games anyway? That's why we have score checks at the half and the 15th or 18th questions. I don't know of anyone interrupting or delaying a game to check on his or her personal stats, either; if someone does do that, the moderator can just say to save it for after the match.
Having access to personal stats gives you that much more drive to improve, plus it's helpful for comparing strengths between sites (like, by looking at the power spread of players) and for seeding at other tournaments.

The lack of individual stats was probably just a precaution. Was it a necessary precaution? Maybe, maybe not. From what I can tell they'll be implemented at the next Marist tournament without any issues so things are looking up on that front.
