NAQT Western PA Championship at CMU, 2/28

Post by Ndg »

Carnegie Mellon Quiz Bowl will host the 2015 NAQT Western Pennsylvania Championship on its Pittsburgh campus on Saturday, February 28, 2014.

Questions: NAQT set IS-146. Each school in attendance will receive a complimentary hard copy after the tournament.

Format: standard NAQT format. Rounds will be timed with 10-minute halves.

Nationals Qualification: The top 15% of the field will qualify for NAQT's HSNCT. The top 15% of small schools will qualify for NAQT's SSNCT. Additionally, the top team and small school team that has not previously qualified for HSNCT/SSNCT will qualify, even if they are outside the top 15%.

This event is a PACE gold qualifier, so the top 20% of teams will also qualify for PACE NSC.

Field: The cap is currently at 20 teams. We have enough rooms reserved for as many as 24 teams and will raise the cap once we acquire enough staff. Only schools from Pennsylvania may register.

Registration: To register, please email me at nadig[at]cmu.edu with the number of teams, buzzers, timers, and moderators you plan on bringing. Note that bringing any or all of these is highly encouraged but not mandatory. The last day to register will be Friday, February 20, so that we can finalize the schedule and staffing assignments.

Fees and discounts are listed below:
  • First team: $70
  • Additional teams: $60
  • Buzzer system (at least eight players): -$5
  • Experienced moderator: -$15
  • Experienced scorekeeper: -$10
All buzzers and moderators must be in good working condition in order to receive discounts. The minimum fee per team is $40.

Payment: we prefer to receive checks on the day of the tournament. However, if you need to send payment ahead of time, you may contact me to arrange this. Please make checks out to "Carnegie Mellon University" (note that this is different than past tournaments).

Schedule: On the day of the event, registration will take place from 8:30 to 9:00 AM, with round 1 beginning no later than 9:30. We expect all teams to play about 9-11 rounds; we will not be running elimination playoffs. We will not be providing lunch. Full logistical details will be sent to registered teams about one week before the tournament.

Hope to see you there!

I've raised the cap to twenty. Hopefully we can go higher than that, but I can't guarantee there's much room left.

I have started a wait list. I reserve the right to give some priority to schools that do not have any teams in the field so far.

With one team dropping, I've added Allderdice B to the field. I will continue to accept registrations for the wait list, which is now empty, in case more teams drop.

Two teams have just dropped from the field. I will waive the registration fee for any teams that can step in to replace them.

Congratulations to Manheim Township, who went undefeated to win this. State College A, Manheim Township B, and State College B all tied for second. Rounding out the top bracket were Winchester Thurston, Manheim Township C, Indiana, and Manheim Township D.

The top four teams qualified for HSNCT and NSC. Whoever was fifth also qualified for NSC, and I will figure out who that is as soon as I finish entering playoff stats.

EDIT: Winchester Thurston was fifth.
