McMaster Invitational, Feb. 21, 2015 @ McMaster

Post by Senator_Jay »

McMaster is pleased to announce (albeit somewhat late and hurriedly) that we shall be hosting a high school Quizbowl tournament on Feb. 21, 2015.

This tournament is intended primarily for local teams reasonably new to the format of Quizbowl who are not planning on attending History Bowl in Ottawa that day, and will be using the NAQT Canada HS set. We are hoping for at least 5-6 teams, although more are welcome.

We are also pleased to announce that PACE has offered for this tournament to serve as a qualifier for NSC!

Logistics:

Location: McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC)
Cost: In order to keep it accessible for local (and potentially cash-strapped) teams, the entry fee will be a paltry $10/person
Timing: Please arrive at McMaster by 8:45, we are hoping for a 9:15am start. Depending on the size of the field, the tournament should likely be done by 4pm.
Lunch: Please either pack your own lunch, or bring money to buy lunch on campus. There are numerous options available for decent food in the vicinity.

For more information or registration, please contact either the TD, Leslie Newcombe ([email protected], or [email protected]) or me ([email protected]).

Are you using the same set from the Ottawa Quizbowl Tournament X back in November?

If so, then teams from Ottawa should make sure they didn't play that tournament in the case that they were planning on making the drive down for this.

Yes, this is the same set used at Ottawa in November.

Although this message arrives somewhat belatedly (apologies, for it took awhile to arrange transportation and confirmation amongst our team), I am writing on behalf of Woburn Collegiate's quizbowl team to make it aware that we intend to send a 4-man team on Saturday (by ourselves, without official school recognition (TDSB requires 6 weeks notice for approval  ).

Based off of what I've heard thus far, here is a field update:

HSC 1-2 teams
SJB maybe 1 team
SWC 1 team
Waterloo CI 2 teams
Westmount 1-2 teams
Woburn CI 1 team

As it stands, our field is currently 6-8 teams, which is honestly more than expected, thanks to those teams who have recently signed up!
A schedule will be determined once we have a solid number of teams (probably the day of).

We are meeting on 2nd floor of MUSC (Student Centre) for around 8:45

*NB* Please direct all queries about this tournament to me ([email protected]) from this point on, our TD will be in San Francisco during the tournament and thus should not have to be forwarding emails from the left coast. Thanks!

Waterloo CI is sending two teams, not just the one.

Thanks to the McMaster club for getting some SW Ontario teams on board.

If any of the schools are considering Provincials in Ottawa, participation in this tournament counts toward the following possible provincials discounts:
-$15 for participating in 2 events*
-$10 for winning an event
-$5 for participating in 1 event

*if the school registers for Toronto History Bowl (or another Canadian History Bowl) before March 6, that can count as a second event.

Can we request an urgent change?

Apparently since we're school unsanctioned and going to , we aren't allowed to register as "Woburn Collegiate"

Instead, we ask to change our name to "Scarborough Scufflers". We maintain that our team is 100% composed of only students from Woburn Collegiate.

Thank you very much.

Waterloo Collegiate A cleared the field with an 8-0 record. Gavin Gao was the highest scorer with an impressive 109.38 points per game, followed by Jacky Li and Daniel Majik. I would like to thank everyone for coming out to play and hope budding teams can come out to more quizbowl events.
