Will scores for all games be put in, or just for the playoff games?

Buckhorn Tournament

Post by bhsmatt »

I've sent all the stats that I have to NAQT. Since we used ASCA rules, we didn't keep up with things exactly by the NAQT book. I will do a better job with that next year. If you would like a copy of all the stats that I have, let me know. I hope you guys enjoyed the tournament.

I agree with Lee that there are 6 or 7 teams that look really good this year. So far, Buckhorn has a 2-0 record against Hoover, but we haven't been able to get past West Point or Gadsden. Likewise, West Point seems to have a hard time against Hoover and Gadsden. The matchups and team strengths/weaknesses are really interesting this season. Spain Park looks dominant, but I think the rest of the top 6 (Buckhorn, Hoover, West Point, Gadsden, James Clemens, and Springwood) could shake out in a lot of different ways depending on how the bracket winds up for the state tournament. You also can't forget about Grissom, Huntsville, and other potential dark horse teams. March and April will be stressful for all of the coaches of these teams.

Good Hope will be hosting a spring tournament on March 12th, the Saturday after ASCA regionals. We will use Maggie Walker's GSAC for the tournament. I am confident that we should be able to accommodate more teams this time (as compared to our last tournament. How did everyone do at District?

At our site, we went 5-0 and averaged exactly 499 ppg.

Arab was also undefeated. I believe their ppg will be in the mid-to-high 300s.

Good Hope and West Limestone were the other teams that made it to regionals. I'm not sure about their averages, but I'm thinking high 200s to mid 300s. Both of those teams were 3-2, I believe.

I also know that Russellville was undefeated at their site. They averaged 366 ppg. I assume that the other teams from that district who will advance averaged less than that. I heard that Florence High gave them a close match, so their average may be in the same ballpark.

I'm anxious to know average scores from the Huntsville district, particularly those teams that will be in our region (James Clemens, Buckhorn, Sparkman).

Sparkman is considerably better than in previous years, they went 4-1 in our pool with a loss to Huntsville. There were twelve teams, so two pools of six. Ours Finished:

1. Huntsville
2. Sparkman
3. Grissom

The other pool was won by James Clements. I think Buckhorn and Covenant Christian rounded out the top three. All six of us are moving on to regionals right? I personally played poorly at districts and have a lot of work to do to get back to state.

I don't think it's too farfetched to say the regional at West Point will be the toughest regional top to bottom again this year. Even though Hoover and Spain Park are in the same region, the West Point region seems to have more competitive teams in it. We were lucky to qualify as a wildcard for state last year and, depending on the pools, that may be our only way to make state this year. Congrats to all the teams that advanced to regionals.

Also, still plenty of time to register for our spring tournament on March 12th. Contact me or Coach Hulsey if you'd like to attend.

All stats from District sites are up on naqt.com EXCEPT for the Huntsville site. For some reason, it says that stats from the Huntsville District are unavailable. That's really frustrating. The average points per game for Buckhorn, James Clemens, and Sparkman are the main stats that I want to see.

I have now had multiple players ask about having a NASAT team from Alabama this year. The tourney is at UKentucky, which isn't that bad a drive, really, and it is really time we consider making this happen. Lee Henry and I have dIscussed this in the past, and I think that between the two of us we would be willing to try to make it happen. Therefore, be it known throughout the state of Alabama that we are interested in hearing from players who would like to participate in such an event. Know ye that you shall be expected to pay some chunk of money to do so, and that you must also be willing to lock up the dates and give a solemn oath that you shall attend if called to serve. Pm this confirmation, along with an overview of your strengths and weaknesses, to me c/o this board. More information to follow if interest is here.

I hope people who are serious really consider doing this. I know when I was in high school it seemed like every year people were interested but there weren't enough to commit, or the team would have over represented some schools. I don't think it would be wise to wait until the state tournament in April and just solicit the top scorers (these players tend to overlap in areas and some aren't use to working as a team). I think the sooner we get players interested and identified the sooner we could put together a decent team that distributes the workload. I know I have been a little resistant to the idea of a state team, but if people are seriously interested I think it would be dumb to blow off a chance to demonstrate how improved Alabama QB is and how good some of our players are

The Good Hope Spring Tournament on March 12th now has enough teams registered that I can now confidently say it will happen, whether it is a small tournament or not. There is still plenty of time to register if you wish to attend. I can assure the tournament will be run on an excellent question set as far as preparing for state and nationals is concerned (Maggie Walker's GSAC), and that the tournament will be run to the best of our ability.

Big congratulations to Springwood, who just won the AISA state championships. They beat us in the finals on the final tossup. Venu Reddy won top scorer (according to TD, I placed second, but there wasn't an official second place so take it with a grain of salt.) Hopefully our coach is gonna let us accept the ASCA bid and we'll get the privilege of finally playing the top teams in the state. Until then, we're going to History Bowl this weekend in Richton.

My coach just locked it in today! We will be able to attend ASCAs!! I can't wait to finally get the team up to play these teams, it'll be an honor to compete.

(In other updates, our team got third at the Richton History Bowl qualifier due to a rough semi performance. I won the bee and my teammate Steele Partridge placed third. Results are pending on the US History Bowl and Geography Bowl qualifying tests. We are looking in to potentially playing NHBB nationals, although APs are making it more difficult.)

My predictions for playoff teams:

Pool A - Spain Park and James Clemens
Pool B - Buckhorn and Huntsville (Sylacauga might manage to upset one or both of these teams)
Pool C - Gadsden City and Hoover
Pool D - LAMP and West Point (This is the pool I'm least sure about. Grissom always seems to have some supernatural magic come over them at State.... And Northridge played Hoover to a tie at Regionals and has defeated some very tough teams this year).

I once again correctly predicted every one of the playoff teams <congratulatory pat on my own back>.

On a more serious note, I think ASCA was great this year. The quality of questions, the competitiveness of teams, and the overall atmosphere of competition in the state have all improved radically in the past 5 or 6 years. The addition of State Championships at each classification level makes a huge difference as well. I am hoping that we get to the point where there are enough teams involved that we may see a day when we can have separate tournaments for each classification.

7A simply dominates. The top 4 teams were all public 7A schools. 6 of the 8 playoff teams were public 7A schools. One was a magnet school (LAMP) that is considered one of the top academic schools in the nation every year. The other was West Point (5A).

If you know me, you know that I don't shy away from competing with ANYONE - regardless of the size of the school. But, I have to say that it is nice to be recognized as the top 5A team. And I also have to admit that there are definitely advantages inherent in coaching at a significantly larger school. These are the same advantages seen in athletics. That is why there are separate classifications in most activities.

As for the results of the tournament, I don't think there were too many surprises. A few things that I found noteworthy:

I was surprised (but perhaps should not have been) at how good Huntsville was. I knew that they would be strong based on the numbers they put up at district and regionals. But, having not seen them at all in any tournaments this year, I may have underestimated them. I knew that I didn't want to have to play them first in the playoffs. I knew that they had the potential to beat us. But, I didn't think that they actually WOULD. But, they did. And then they went on to play a close match against Spain Park and to defeat Hoover in the consolation. So, kudos to Huntsville High.

Northridge had a really bad day for a really good team. None of our matches in the prelims were really close except for the one against Northridge. We beat them by 10. They went 1-4 overall with several close matches. They are much better than their record shows.

Sylacauga. We were concerned going in that Will Hughes would be able to get his team into the playoffs and potentially knock us out of the 5A Championship spot. He is GOOD. And, with us losing Zakk and Ross to graduation, Sylacauga is in a great position to give us a run for the money for the 5A State title for the next couple of years. BTW - is Will a sophomore or a freshmen? Either way, he's awesome.

Sharath. He's going to be a thorn in every other team's side for the next couple of years for sure. Hopefully having a player in the state as good as him will cause other teams to step up and raise the level of competition across the state. Hey Sharath, if you ever want to move to Cullman....

Spain Park. Wow. What a year. They have been - since day one - the absolute most dominant team in the history of Alabama quiz bowl. I surely wanted to beat them at least once, but it wasn't to be. A huge congratulations on your accomplishments this year. I hope that they are able to go far into the playoffs at HSNCT in Dallas and prove to the rest of the nation that Alabama is no joke.

I think that's about it for now. It's been a great year for ASCA and I look forward to what's next.

I do have to commend ASCA for not only the addition of class championships, but also a much more well run Small School State Championship this year as well.

Going into state, I assumed we would need to be at least 3-2 to have a chance at the 1A-4A championship. Turns out the magic number would've been 4-1. Even though we were 0-5, 3 of our games were decided on tossup 20. Losing all 3 of those games made this one of the most agonizing tournaments I've ever played, but sometimes that's just the way things go. State was very good practice against some very good teams which should help us be prepared for SSNCT in 3 weeks.

Congrats to everyone on a great tournament.

I had to take a couple days before I could post.

This was a really, really tough year in ASCA, and Hoover took a really, really, tough set of losses at State. Three total matches decided by four questions is rough to get over, especially when two of them are the semifinals and the consolation match. I would have very much liked to see how we matched up against Spain Park again--we were the only team to beat them from AL this season, and we never got to play with our full squad in place against them for various reasons, but there's no doubt I would have seen them as the favorites in any matchup. They were well-prepared and well-coached, and worked all year for excellence. Hats off to them.

I agree with everyone that the competition level has really jumped this year. It's going to be great to be a part of ASCA for the next few years, and I look forward to nationals.

Congrats to all the Alabama teams on their performances at nationals, especially Spain Park for being the first bama team to make the playoffs in a while. Both Hoover teams went 5-5 again (this is like the 5th year in a row that our A team has gone .500 and this is the 3rd time we've had 2 teams go .500). This year we had a combo of bad luck and some crucial mistakes but we have high hopes for next year. Our B team had the 2nd highest ppg for 5-5 teams and all of them come back next year (2 seniors and 3 juniors).

How was nationals for everybody else?
