Wake-Up Call V at Northwestern (October 24, 2015)

Post by Harpie's Feather Duster »

I'm happy to announce that Northwestern Quiz Bowl will be hosting the fifth edition of its Wake-Up Call novice tournament on October 24, 2015. The field is restricted to high school teams that fit the eligibility guidelines defined below.

Location:
Northwestern University is located in the northern Chicago suburb of Evanston and is easily accessible to teams in Chicagoland and the surrounding areas. This year's tournament will take place in Fisk Hall. Parking can be found just across the street in both the Lakeside Parking Structure and the South Campus Parking Garage. Parking on weekends is free and requires no permit, and there should be plenty of space available with no football game in town on the 24th. An interactive map of campus can be found here for your viewing convenience.

Question Set and Format:
We will be using NAQT IS #151A for this tournament. NAQT has informed me that this set will not be used for any JV conference matches in Illinois. Format will be 20 tossups and 20 bonuses with 15-point powers and 5-point negs. There will be no computational math or bouncebacks on bonuses. We will also be using sudden-death tiebreakers. We will be using a bracketed round-robin followed by a rebracket for playoffs and will have at least 8 guaranteed games.

Eligibility:
Each team is limited to 6 players, of which 4 will play at a time with the option of substitutions at halftime and before tiebreakers if necessary. All players are eligible if they fit the following novice guidelines put forth by the IHSSBCA:

- Has played fewer than 40 varsity-level matches for his or her school’s top team
- Has played fewer than 80 career high school matches at any level
- Has never averaged more than 35 points per game at a varsity invitational tournament
- Has never averaged more than 20 points per game at a national championship tournament
- Has never been named to an All-Tournament Team at a high school tournament at any level

Prices and Payment:
The tournament will cost as follows:
$80 for the first team from a given school
$70 per second, third, fourth team etc.
-$5 for a working buzzer system
-$15 for a moderator/scorekeeper.
The minimum fee per team is $50.

All staffers will receive free pizza for lunch. There are many restaurants within a 5-10 minute walking distance in downtown Evanston that teams will be able to enjoy during the lunch break.

Please pay for this tournament by sending a check to:

Dylan Minarik
630 Emerson Street
Room 327
Evanston, IL 60201

Please make all checks out to "Northwestern University." I can also accept checks or cash on the day of the tournament.

Registration:
Teams who would like to register for this tournament should do so by e-mailing our student organization e-mail account at [email protected]. A subject line of "Wake-Up Call" or something else quizbowl-related will help your registration not get lost in the spam box.

Hope to see everybody in October!

Our field is currently half full. I've made the decision to start a waitlist for schools that want to bring more than 2 teams so we can initially fill the field with as many schools as possible. Teams will come off of that waitlist and fill open spots in the field on September 19th.

Stevenson won this tournament in the second game of a final of which they had an advantage in. Stats have been sent to NAQT and will be up shortly. We ended up using a 7-game full round robin format, which, while short for non-novice events and below what I ideally would've liked to run, was considered preferable to the other option of running a 10-game format.
