The Academic Team at The Early College at Guilford is pleased to announce that we will host the 6th Quaker Bowl on Saturday, October 17, 2015. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend. The tournament will take place on the Guilford College campus, in Greensboro, North Carolina. The opening meeting will take place in the Joseph M. Bryan Jr. Auditorium (just as it did last year), and the matches will take place in the Duke and King Buildings on the campus.

AFFLIATION AND QUESTIONS: We will use NAQT Invitational Questions, particularly NAQT set #IS-148. The tournament will serve as an unofficial NAQT event, and as such, the top 15% of the field will qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship. We are also looking to affiliate with the PACE National Tournament, and tournaments run or co-run by The Early College at Guilford Academic Team have been certified as gold or platinum tournaments for six straight years.

FORMAT: The tournament field size will be capped at 28 teams. The teams will be divided into preliminary brackets, and then will be rebracketed into playoff brackets. More information about the exact format will be released as we get closer to the date, and may change due to the number of teams, etc. Each team will be guaranteed to play 9 games. In the event that fewer than 28 teams register, the format will change accordingly. Trophies will be awarded to the top teams, and book prizes will be awarded to the top eight individual scorers. Each match will consist of 2 un-timed halves, with each half consisting of 10 buzzer tossup questions. We will have powers and negs at the Quaker Bowl, but no bouncebacks on bonuses. ***There will also be no computational math tossups at this year's Quaker Bowl. We will leave in computational math bonuses. ***

REGISTRATION: To register, please e-mail me, Paul Smith, at ecgquizbowl AT gmail.com with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you want to bring, and e-mail address where we may contact you. You may also register using our Google Document: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/15JLAWE ... I/viewform .
Soon after you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation e-mail and a packet e-mailed from The Early College at Guilford Academic Team containing the official rules, directions, parking and dining information (all materials which will also be provided on the day of the competition). Again, registration fees may be mailed in advance for a discount (with the registration sheet) or paid at the tournament. Checks should be made out to “The Early College at Guilford.” For the purposes of tournament organization, our registration will run until October 10th—please send in your registration information by that date.

This year, we are committing to hosting 28 teams. In the instance that more than 28 teams register, we will start a waiting list. We will also have a stand-by list for those teams that would be willing to compete at no charge if there are last-minute drops.

FEE STRUCTURE:
Base fee: $75 per team. We will initially only take one team per school until September 11th. Please indicate in your registration that you’d like to bring multiple teams, and we will let you know if there are open spots after September 11th for additional teams.
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work).
Staff discount: $10 off school's total fee. This could be a coach, parent, student who is not playing, etc. Team-provided staffers will keep score for various games not involving the team with which they are affiliated. Volunteer staffers must stay through all the games (except finals) in order to receive credit for their school. You may have only one staffer count for your discount.
Early payment discount: *** $20 off school’s total fee. If The Early College at Guilford receives your payment that has been postmarked for October 9th, we will take off $20 from your school’s fee. ***
Travel discount: $15 off school’s total fee for traveling over 200 miles (as determined by MapQuest).
Minimum fee: The minimum fee is $0 (you cannot have a negative fee)

METHOD OF PAYMENT: All teams must pay on or before the day of the tournament (see above note on the discount). We would prefer that you send in your payment before the tournament, but will also accept payment in person right before the tournament starts. Teams who do not pay on or before the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 penalty and will have two weeks to pay their total amount before we start mailing letters to your school administration about it. We can accept personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or Quiz Bowl club funds. *** In particular, our administration has stated that we cannot accept cash this year for accounting reasons. ***

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players. Teams consisting of fewer than three players may not play without my express prior permission.

FOOD: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. The Quaker Village shopping area is within walking distance of the tournament, and we will be working closely with the eating establishments in this shopping area to offer deals to teams competing in our tournament; maps and suggestions will be provided at the tournament and in e-mails sent to the teams before the tournament.

We look forward to seeing your team at the 7th Quaker Bowl!

Stats are up through the 5 preliminary rounds (please see below). We initially had 3 brackets of 6 teams each. The top two teams in each bracket will advance to the 1st tier playoff bracket, 3rd and 4th place teams in each preliminary bracket advance to the 2nd tier playoff bracket, and the 5th and 6th place teams advance to the 3rd tier playoff bracket.

Congratulations to NCSSM A for finishing first at today's Quaker Bowl. Cave Spring A finished 2nd and Raleigh Charter A finished 3rd, earning them bids to HSNCT in May. Stats are posted below. Please let me know if you have any corrections!

Again, teams were placed in a preliminary bracket with 6 total teams. Top 2 teams advanced to the top playoff bracket and played for the right for the top 6 spots. The only games that mattered for final seeding were games played against teams in the same playoff bracket.
