Prison Bowl IX @ Hunter College High School (April 2, 2016)

Post by atai »

Hunter College High School is proud to present the ninth iteration of our annual Prison Bowl invitational tournament. This tournament will take place on Saturday, April 2, 2016, and will use the house-written Prison Bowl IX set. Our school, Hunter College High School, is located at 71 East 94th Street, New York, NY, 10128, between Park and Madison Avenues. For questions and/or concerns, email tournament director Albert Tai at [email protected].

Registration

To register for this tournament, please fill out this form. We will try to email you back with a confirmation and an invoice as soon as possible.

Note: To ensure that the maximum number of schools can compete in this tournament, the field will be limited to four teams per school.

Fee Structure
Registration fees are a whole 10 dollars cheaper than last year's!
$70 for the first team from a school
$60 for each subsequent team
-$5 for each working buzzer system
-$10 for each experienced moderator
Minimum fee for schools bringing n teams = $50 x n

Further discounts (such as for travel) can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis with the tournament director.

We prefer payment through a check made out to HCHS Quiz Bowl on the day of the tournament. If this is absolutely impossible for any reason, we will also accept cash.

Question Set
Prison Bowl IX is a regular difficulty set written by the Hunter College High School team and a few freelance writers. Computational math is not part of the distribution, which is as follows:

4/4 Literature
4/4 History
4/4 Science
3/3 Fine Arts (1.5/1.5 Visual Arts, 1.5/1.5 Music)
2.5/2.5 RMP (.8/.8 Religion, 1/1 Mythology, .8/.8 Philosophy)
.8/.8 Social Science
.6/.6 Geography
.5/.5 Current Events
.6/.6 Pop Culture (.0714/.0714 Sports)

Past Prison Bowls can be found here.

Tournament Format
Tournament games will follow standard ACF rules of untimed rounds consisting of 20 tossups and 20 three-part, 30 point bonuses (without bouncebacks). Ties will be broken by tiebreaker tossups. The set isn’t power-marked, but there are -5 point negs.

The tournament itself will consist of bracketed round-robin prelims and rebracketed round-robin playoffs, the details of which will be decided and announced after the field is determined. Depending on field size, teams should expect to play anywhere from 11 to 13 rounds. We'll have trophies for top teams and book prizes for top scorers!

Registration and breakfast will be ongoing from 8:00 am to 8:45 am, with the first round beginning at approximately 9:00 am and the tournament ending at around 5:30-6:30 pm.

Transportation
Our school is located at 71 East 94th Street, New York, NY, 10128, between Park and Madison Avenues. It is very close to the 96th street stop on the 6 train line, and can also be reached by the m1-4 buses along Madison and the crosstown m96 bus along 96th. Look for the large, red castle. There is a bus drop-off area at our school on Park, and cars can park at Majestic Car Park on 94th between Park and Lexington.

Please note that Hunter is located in the center of the incredibly dense urban jungle that is Manhattan. In the past, a few teams have notified us that they encountered parking troubles during tournaments with especially large fields. We hope that such inconveniences do not detract from teams' overall experiences, so here is a list of other nearby car parks in case the curb around our school or Majestic Car Park is crowded:

Gallery Garage Corporation (>1 block away, 94th and Madison)
Icon Parking Systems (~2 blocks away, 94th and 3rd)
Icon Parking Systems (~3 blocks away, 95th between 2nd and 3rd)
Garage Management Company (~3 blocks away, 94th between 2nd and 3rd)

Food
For breakfast, we'll provide the standard quizbowl fare of juice and bagels, and release teams for about an hour to explore the local eateries for lunch. Don't worry about getting lost; we'll provide a map detailing the many nearby lunch options. If you or any of your players have any food allergies that should warrant concerns, please email [email protected] to let us know.

UPDATE: We have been platinum certified by PACE! This means that the top 25% of teams in the tournament (rounded up to the nearest integer) will qualify for NSC in June. At the moment, this number of qualifying teams looks to be 9.

Stats are now up!

Thanks to all who came to our tournament today.

Congrats to 1st place champion DCC and 2nd place winner Bergen, who battled it out in the finals. Also congrats to East Brunswick for defeating West Egg A to take 3rd.

Remember: please do not publicly discuss these questions, as we still have mirrors coming up!

If you'd like to see any specific questions or have comments/criticisms about the set, please email me at [email protected], and I'll relay your thoughts to our sectional editors. We've noted what the teams said during and between rounds, and will be sure to take that into account when writing the next iteration of our set. We hope that any errors you encountered today did not detract that much from your overall experience.

Also, I'd like to thank Jon Pinyan from Bergen, Guy Rabner from Livingston, and Jeff Xie from Columbia for helping us out today.
