2016 International History Olympiad: Oahu - July 17-24

Post by Great Bustard »

IHBB/NHBB is delighted to announce that the 2016 International History Olympiad will take place at the University of Hawaii-Manoa in Honolulu from July 17-24! Highlights will include lots of great history quiz fun, an overnight stay and closing ceremonies on board the USS Missouri, cultural activities, and a chance to meet friends from around the world. There's also an optional vacation extension at Waikiki featuring a family history quiz tournament and an all-subject quizbowl tournament on the beach.
See http://www.historyolympiad.com for more - more details on all aspects of the Olympiad including costs and discounts coming soon; full program announcement expected by the end of February. Remember that after this year, the Olympiad becomes a biennial event; the next Olympiad will then be held in Europe or Asia in 2018, so if you'd like to compete, plan accordingly. Contact me with any questions. Aloha!

You can see most of the results from the bee events and bowl here: http://historyolympiad.com/iho2016/ although I am missing a couple finals scoresheets still. The other events (like the Civilization tournament, or the ancestry.com research competition) have the medals in the medals table, but I don't/won't have scores posted.

Just because I'm sitting at the computer now and was curious, of the 85 students that we had, 53 of them made a final in one of the bee events (of which there were 12 all told in each division including the main event), and if I've done this SQL query correctly Luke Tierney and Jakob Myers made all 12 finals in the varsity bees.

It was a topic chosen by the attendees of the event, who all voted, and it ended up being History of the Cold War.

How does that work--was it written in advance or like literally written at the tournament itself?

Are the questions from these events archived or made available somewhere?

Longer post to follow later this week, but this event was a great success, and my thanks to all who attended and made it possible. On the matter of questions, some (but not all) questions will be available from this event on the Olympiad website but that won't happen until later in August. At the conclusion of the Olympiad, it was announced that the 2018 Olympiad will be held in Berlin (almost certainly in the latter half of July again, and likely, it will be slightly longer - about 10 days length is projected).

That link doesn't include the misc events like the Civ tournament or the ping pong tournament.
