ATROPHY VII @ NIU (04/16/16)

Post by Irreligion in Bangladesh »

This is the announcement for Northern Illinois University's seventh annual ATROPHY (April Tournament Run on Pennies, Halfpence, and Yen), to be held in DeKalb, IL on April 16th, 2016. We're excited, once again, to be running Yale's BHSAT set. (This set is also being used at the Galesburg Rotary event, so teams cannot play both events.)

Logistical Details
ATROPHY VII will be held on April 16th at NIU's main DeKalb campus. We're gonna try to get the same building as we did for Huskie Bowl -- that was a welcome change from DuSable Hall, whose rooms are a bit tight and whose desks are not as nice.

ATROPHY has traditionally served as a preparatory tournament for nationals-caliber teams at a significant price discount to assist the nationals-weary budget. With that said, all teams are welcome, and we may split the field into divisions if a) we have enough registrations to merit doing so, and b) a significant number of registered teams would prefer we do so.

The field for ATROPHY is currently limited to 18 teams, though we hope to expand it to 24 if demand & moderator supply allow.

ATROPHY Fees:
Entry Fee per A-team: $60
Entry Fee per B, C, etc. team: $55 each
Working buzzer set: -$5
Experienced moderator without laptop: -$20
Experienced moderator with laptop: -$30
Minimum fee: $20/team

Laptops will be necessary for keeping stats via Neg5; we can print paper packets for moderators who request them.

Post-ATROPHY events
Following ATROPHY's final matches, we will be having a brief practice event for Team Illinois, using the MYSTERIUM college set. Individuals interested in playing this event should contact me. The event will have a small per-player cost to cover the question mirroring fee and pizza for dinner. We are also planning for a non-Team Illinois post-tourney event for players who aren't interested in Team Illinois but may be stuck there while their teammates play it. We expect ATROPHY to finish sometime around 4 or 5 (depending on finals needs), and for the post-ATROPHY events to run until about 8. Full details on that, plus costs for both post-events, will be finalized soon.

Registration
To register, simply e-mail me at [email protected] (that is, my personal, not my NHBB, e-mail account). All B-teams, etc. will be initially waitlisted until March 31st, and all B-teams will be placed ahead of all C-teams on that initial waitlist. That is, if I were to register 3 Keith teams, Keith A would get in the field, Keith B would be first on the waitlist, and Keith C would be second on the waitlist until somebody else registered a B-team, which would slot in between Keith B and Keith C in the order. Once the field opens to multiple school entries on March 31st, this preference for B-teams will be lifted.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me or post here. Thanks!

At the moment, we've got 18 interested teams, 4 of which are B-teams that get in the field tomorrow. Now's your last chance to guarantee a spot!

Brief results post -- we used 2 cross-pools of 7 teams (each team played the teams in the other pool). While we had all manner of contingency scenarios outlined, the end result of the prelims is that we have a top 4 pool of Stevenson (2-0), Auburn (0-2), Barrington (1-1), and Wheaton Warrenville South (1-1). In the Round 8 happening now, Barrington v. WWS for the right to be in the final; Auburn v. Stevenson to determine if Stevenson's undefeated and advantaged in that final, or if they're one-loss and it's a one-game final.

Past that, I don't know how well the stats will bear it out, but we have IMSA v. Hinsdale Central A playing for 5th and UChicago Lab v. Homewood-Flossmoor A playing for 7th.

Oops! Never came back to update this post. Full stats are up at this link; if you'd like prelim/playoff splits, http://www.ihssbca.org/tournaments/tournaments1516/ has the links there. Stevenson defeated Barrington in the first game of their advantaged final; WWS finished in 3rd, Auburn 4, IMSA 5, Hinsdale 6, UCLab 7, and H-F 8.
