I think there are a couple dark horses to look out for: Fremd and Waubonsie Valley.
I'm pretty sure there are no seniors on Fremd's A team, and I'm assuming Brian K will study a lot this summer and become an even stronger player for Waubonsie.

Hinsdale Central will be a much weaker team this season. I will be scaling back on quizbowl but our team looks like two hist players, Michael (who's also good at Irish stuff and football) and Atharv (who's also good at geography and rock music and some lit), a fourth scorer tbd but probably a lIt player, and me, hopefully.

WWS is also probably weaker, but I have no idea how much the younglings have studied this summer. Two incoming juniors went to ACE camp this summer, so hopefully that means something.

NHBB's just about finished finalizing our slate of Illinois tournaments this year.

In northern Illinois,
*Winnebago will host a new C-set event; it's on December 10th.
*Belvidere North will host a new B-set event on January 21st.

In central Illinois,
*Springfield is hosting a C-set event on March 18th.

In Chicago,
*Fenwick will host a C-set event again this year; it's on November 12th, so as not to conflict with Harvard Fall at Auburn like last year;
*Loyola will host the IL State Championships on A-set on February 4th, the same weekend as last year.

As with all NHBB events, these have varsity and junior varsity divisions, and middle school teams are invited to participate as well. For more information, please visit historybowl.com or contact me, via PM here or e-mail at [email protected].

Plus we're actually going to come to tournaments and maybe win our section this year. Naperville North has never gone to IHSA State so this is pretty cool.

Waubonsie Valley is looking to be much better this season. Collectively, we've tried to cover up a lot of holes (especially in History/Geography) and we have acquired a variety of potential specialists who can greatly improve our JV team. We will also be attending a bunch of tournaments this year as well, especially ACF Fall and Scobol Solo.

We played Naperville Central and Lake Park, racked up about 400 points per match. I had about 24 TUH through the whole thing. I think especially our seniors are starting to function a lot better as a team, so I'm pretty optimistic this year.

As I'm getting stuff printed for NHBB's first IL tournament of the year (at Fenwick this Saturday), a quick update -- we've confirmed a C-set site for Springfield on March 18th (the Saturday of IHSA State weekend) and a B-set site for Belvidere North HS on January 21st. I'd still love to host a B-set tournament in Chicago on January 14th; if you'd like to host it, your school can enter up to 6 teams for free! Just let me know.

Stevenson will be going to the Stevenson kickoff, where barrington and stevenson A should finish on top by a good margin, followed by, in no particular order, a mix of auburn IMSA stevenson B and Fremd A. Not sure what places 3-6 will be though, But it's important to note given field size, top ~5 should be qualifying for hsnct.

Kickoff just wrapped up at Stevenson. After running the table in the morning in the competitive division, Barrington faced Stevenson A in an advantaged final. Stevenson won the first game, and then Barrington came from behind at question 16 to win 400-385 for an exciting final game. IMSA A finished 3rd in the championship division.

In the standard division there was no less excitement as an undefeated Fremd B team lost the first game of an advantaged final to IMSA B, before coming back and winning the final, 365-250.

On behalf of Matt Laird who ran the tournament (and averted a major disaster early on because he is Matt Laird, and this is what he does), congratulations to all teams, and a special thank you to all of the people who made this happen.

Stats are mostly posted in the competitive division, and should be posted in the next hour or so in the standard.

Kickoff at Springfield:

Glenwood went 10-0 to win, beating Normal U-High 475-105 in the final. Macomb took 3rd over Mahomet-Seymour.

If Glenwood can keep a consistent lineup week in and week out, they could pull upsets come spring. Also, watch out for Springfield over the next 2-3 years. Their freshmen showed that they could run with the varsity teams, and have a lot of upward potential

This is a little odd of a place to put it, but it seems like the only thread I can find for the Auburn mirror--and a lot of Illinois teams seem to have been there--so I'm going to give my congratulations to Naperville North (?) and just add my reminder not to discuss the set publicly, as there are several mirrors planned, and to join the private discussion group instead. You can find it through these insructions:
UlyssesInvictus wrote:Thanks! As a lesson to anyone who hasn't used usergroups before, you'll have to

I gotta say, I was very impressed by the stats at the HFT mirror, but especially those of Naperville North and Jakob Myers. We all knew he was very good at NAQT questions, but turns out he is pretty darn good on other sets as well.

I would also like to congratulate Naperville North and Jakob Myers for their victory at Harvard Fall. That was a masterful performance. I would also like to thank Auburn for hosting, the other teams for their high level of competition, and the staff for taking the time out of their long day to help out. I had a great time due to the people enumerated above and I think they deserve a big Thanks.

Note: This post best if read in Trump impression, especially considering the odd timing.

Appreciate the congrats for being right on several questions at HFT. I don't want congrats, I want a set not filled with awful pun-bonuses. We must be smart!

Edit: ngl the set was pretty well written as a whole. Some of the powermarks could have been better places, and some of the bonus- set puns were not good puns, but otherwise, a very good competition in a very good packet. Congratulations especially to IMSA and Barrington for beating us, and double- congratulations to Barrington for having a better record than we did.
