New Trier Varsity, IL (12/17/16) (Terrapin & NAQT IS-161A)

The 2016 New Trier Varsity Tournament will take place on December 17. We will have an Über-Competitive Division and a Standard Division. The Terrapin Set will be used in the Über-Competitive Division, and NAQT IS 161A will be used in the Standard Division.

To register for the tournament, use the attached Entry Form. To reserve spots for a team or apply to staff, contact me at [email protected] or post below.

Though many teams can register for the division of their choice, I reserve the right to require teams to play in the Über-Competitive Division if they are very strong and in the Standard Division if they are not very strong. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Generally speaking, teams that are in the Top 25 in the country must play Über-Competitive, and teams that have not demonstrated an ability to score at least 15 PPB on a high school regular difficulty set must play Standard. This tournament is for high school teams only.

Because the two divisions are using different questions, and the Über-Competitive Division questions are very difficult for high school students, we are allowing all teams to register for the division of their choice. This means that there may be some very strong teams in the Standard Division. The tournament format will be determined based on the number of entries for each division. When you register, please let me know how many teams you want in each division.

This competition will follow PACE rules, including 4-on-4, neg penalties, and no bouncebacks on bonuses. We will use 15 point powers.

The cost is $90 per team, which covers lunch for the students and coach. There is not a buzzer discount, but we expect teams to bring buzzers unless they have a good reason not to. Teams traveling long distances or who are in financial hardship can request a discount.

This tournament is getting big. I will take any team that signs up this week. After that, it depends how many moderators I can get.

I could use more moderators, so let me know if you can help out.

We currently have 18 teams in the Über-Competitive Division, so I am freezing registrations there. We currently have 51 teams in the Standard Division, and I would be happy to see that number move a little up or a little down.

EDIT: Now 52 in Standard, which is at least an even number

EDIT: Now 53. One more would be good.

EDIT: Now 54. Our field is now closed, and anybody else who wants to join will be placed on a waitlist.

For Über-Competitive, we'll do three morning pools. For the afternoon, the top two in each morning pool will be in the top pool, 3rd and 4th will be in the next pool, and 5th and 6th will be in the next pool. We will play off morning ties if they affect which pool teams go into. Teams will play four afternoon matches with one morning match carrying over. We will break ties for the first four places, and the winning team needs to clear the field by two wins, though it's only one win if there is a tie for 2nd.

For Standard, we'll do nine morning pools. For the afternoon, the nine pool winners and the three top teams with winning records by PPB will play in parallel championship pools. We will play off ties if necessary to determine who goes in the championship pools. We will use non-overtime points scored to break ties within the championship pools and have a 1st place match and 3rd place match. The teams not in the championship pools will be ranked by PPB and placed in consolation pools for five matches for 13th place, 19th place, etc.

We now have two openings in Über-Competitive and two in Standard. If they Über-Competitive openings don't fill soon, the tournament format will change accordingly.

Just to be clear, Yavin is the upper pool and Endor is the lower pool, even though the display shows Yavin on the bottom.

The Über-Division of NTV has finished with Naperville North defeating Barrington in a one game playoff. Chattahoochee A and Stevenson A finished 3rd and 4th, respectively.

The Über stats were kept on Neg 5, and the link a few posts above will take you there. As David Reinstein noted, "Yavin" is the top pool and "Endor" is the consolation pool because complete Death Star trumps under-construction-with-Ewoks Death Star.

Bryant and Rizzo are the top divisions in Standard. Carmel is currently playing Loyola for 1st, and Fremd B is playing Lyons for 3rd.

Thanks a ton to Bryan Berend, Farah Bilimoria, Jeff Brigham, John Brown, Colby Burnett, Irene Ducharme, Jason Dutmers, Tom Egan, Mark Elrod, Ryan Fedewa, Brad Fischer, Brian Foecking, Greg Gauthier, Jonah Greenthal, Clare Hannon, Frank Hannon, Denise Kreb, Mike Laudermith, John Legendre, Bryan Lu, Timothy Mathew, Dylan Minarik, Maciej Mleczko, Ali Nagib, Anand Poozhikunnel, Jeff Price, Tejas Raje, Simon Ricci, Micah Robert, BJ Ryan, Michael Sacks, Adam Silverman, Jamie Simon, Jonathan Suh, Koby Theobald, Derek VanBriesen, Tyler Vaughan, Ben Yang, and Jennie Yang for making this tournament a success. Much credit also goes to the University of Maryland quizbowl team and NAQT for giving us questions that were high quality and worked well for our fields.

Thanks also to the teams--the week leading up to this tournament had a lot of drama due to the weather forecasts, but all's well that ends well. It's great to see lots of students and coaches excited about quizbowl and teams playing it at a strong level. I can't blame the teams that didn't make it, because those weather forecasts were pretty scary at times.

If you have any feedback on the tournament, please email me or post. If you have any feedback on the questions, join the 2016 Terrapin Discussion or email [email protected].
