Northmont Pre-Nationals Tournament

Northmont HS will be hosting our second annual Pre-Nationals tournament on Saturday, May 20th (the weekend before NAQT Nationals). We will be using the NAQT D2 ICT set for 2017, which will be a very challenging set for teams attending one of the two national tournaments held in the following weeks. We are not running this event as a fundraiser, and will be charging $25 per team to attend (just enough to pay NAQT for the questions and the custodian for working that day). We hope to draw between 8-12 teams and will offer a round robin or double round robin. As many rounds as teams want to play, we'll play. We ask that all teams bring a buzzer set (and if you have a reader, that is always welcome). We won't be granted any discounts for those due to the low price of the event.

Hope you will consider attending if you are making the trip to Atlanta or Chicago for PACE. I will update the field for the event below.

Sidney (1)

and I know everybody would love to have some more competition for a sweet ICT mirror!!!

Ben, you forgot about IMSA. More out-of-state and in-state teams should come!

That never stopped Indiana teams from playing the same set in the past

Citation? I could see it happening, but that's pretty outrageous nevertheless.

In 2010–2011 Andrew Van Duyn of Culver played the HFT set twice (once in Illinois and once in Ohio). His performance the second time was way, way better. He claims he didn't realize he was playing the same questions twice, but many people were skeptical.

Ha, I forgot about this. We lost a match to him at that tournament where he powered a tossup on Master and Margarita after "One character in this work has a retinue." Good times.

Andy Watkins' defense of Andrew after the fact is equally amusing.

"Right, exactly. The issue at hand is clearly not that they intentionally, systematically cheated... or Andrew's stats would have to have improved by more than ~20%. (Unless his goal was very strange indeed: "cheat blatantly, and don't do well enough to win or get very close to winning, including when you could have won some close games" is a weird strategy. I agree that both Culver and Solon screwed up a bit here, but it wasn't a conscious "let's be awful now, okay?" effort."

C'mon, get better at cheating!

I don't encourage this! There are basically two categories of cheaters: those who do it so subtly they are never detected, and those who do it so blatantly they are caught. If someone is to cheat, I'd certainly prefer the latter. (Though, perhaps needless to say, I'd prefer they not cheat.)

There is an third category — people who cheat subtly and are caught for other reasons — but it is very rare. (I can only think of two cases off the top of my head, and one of them probably should have been noticed as blatant.)
