This is a hub for the announced and/or putative side events at the 2018 HSNCT. Please post if you have any more information about these side events (a main thread, for instance), or believe that I'm missing one:

Event | Subject | Day/Time | Chance of Running
==========================================
ACRONYM | Pop Culture | Friday | Confirmed
GMX: Soul of a Planet | Geography | ~11 PM/after ACRONYM Fri | Likely
SOUNDTRACK | Audio (Pop Culture) | Saturday after staff event | Confirmed
PACENSC | Pokemon | Saturday after staff event | Likely
some guerilla HSNCT staff event | ??? | Sat night | Confirmed

If enough of these side events all start running, I'll make a spreadsheet where people can sign up as well.

I'll keep this thread updated, but please keep in mind that there may be some delay.

There is a corresponding NSC side-events here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20995

And here's NAQT's official side-event policy: https://www.naqt.com/nationals/side-event-policy.html

Kind of hoping FILM would run elsewhere since this schedule is pretty huge.

Yeah, I wanted to run FILM at CO, but I was just concerned I was going to get crowded out by Chicago Trash, and there's no confirmed summer side event yet.

The odds are looking good for this to end up at NSC, though. I'll change that "Maybe" to a "Not super likely."

I mean, the last two years there's been a summer open that's just been all side events.

(I like those because I win a lot)

Seems very likely that there will be demand for something like it again this year, given how generally popular it's been.

(me too!)

Details to come shortly, but I will be planning a side event for staff only (in response to the staff survey results of 2017) to take place on Saturday night of HSNCT. This will be guerrilla format with minimal writing required to enter.

Edited to note that the survey was in 2017, not 2018.

I was thinking of running another side event weekend at Michigan State in May or June for any overflow events. Please let me know if there is sufficient interest for this. I don't know where I will be working this summer so this is up in the air.

I'm in discussion on this topic at Will; a likely scenario is WORLDSTAR getting mirrored at one national tournament and Historature at the other. If WORLDSTAR does happen here it would likely be on Saturday.

I like them, even if I do not win a lot.

Do you think people would be interested in a side event weekend with say (purely as an example) Toronto Hybrid and one of the two British sets (CamO or Oxford) as the two main events and then like 2 side events a day? This is basically what we played last year in July and it was pretty popular.

I see that Raynor's already updated the post at the top (thanks!), but I wanted to bump the thread for people who don't check the trash section: SOUNDTRACK will likely be happening on Sunday night at HSNCT. For more details, see this post.

EDIT: we've moved this to Saturday night instead.

Just a bump that this helpful listing exists for your (you, the viewer!) aid. At this point, it seems that the four events in the OP will be the final slate of side events, and I'm unlikely to update the original post further. I won't be at HSNCT, so any updates @ Atlanta are unlikely to find their way into this thread.

Good luck to everyone!

If you're interested in the extremely niche pastime of "remembering some guys," there's also going to be a short, shootout-style event called "Let's Remember Some Guys." (This is a tossup-only event with short questions on non-superstar athletes in various sports.) It will take place on Saturday night after the Pokemon/audio events.

If you're interested in playing this event, check out the announcement thread here: http://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=19695

You're welcome to write a packet as well. Info on that is in the thread (short questions, only 12-question packets, so it shouldn't take much time). Packets are due on Friday (or you can just bring them with you on Saturday).

Please fill out this google form if you're interested in playing so I can make sure we have enough space to accommodate everyone: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... Q/viewform
